However, I will flash my highbeams if I'm in the fast lane and want a slow moving car to move over (which works sometimes, although it works better outside of Seattle for some reason).

I never heard of it. So how are we to know if the flash is do to my headlight problems, due to some other car's headlight problems, a mistake, young kids fooling around, or do to a cop? Do you just slow everytime you think a headlight was flashed?

Just drive ~5MPH speed limit and you should be ok.

I once had a friend get stopped for doing 3MPH over 35 in the city DOWN A HILL:|

For revenue generation...

When the police stop using speeding tickets to pad city coffers then I will regain respect for them.

Yes, I warn them....and I don't really think that it is illegal to warn them.

Yeah, I know it's something you could do, but it's almost like a fairytale these days, since most drivers will be offended if you flash your high beams...and the cars in front of you will probably extend a gesture out the window as well. All in all, I don't think it'd work, so I don't bother.

How is a cop supposed to approach a car who's doing 3 MPH over? Thats ridiculous. "You know how fast you were going?" Just seems like a laughable situation. Did he get a ticket?

My friend's mom got one for going 2 over and she took it to court and LOST. I didn't even think radar detectors were that accurate. Also, if any of you are going to North Seattle, specifically LFP go 2 under.

BTW, I'm posting this b/c I got a ticket in bumfvck Virigina last week on my way up to Baltimore and I saw a motorcycle cop today camping out so I flashed my lights at the next 6 cars I saw coming.

Ticket was for 80 in a 65 (no reckless charge). The cop was the NICEST cop I've ever gotten and was very pleasant. $49 processing fee + $5 for each mile over. $125.

But I'm not taking any fuggin points by paying it off, so I've already called a lawyer in Virginia and it's gonna cost me $500 in court costs (I get a 25% discount due to legal insurance so that brings it down to 375). And I'll likely get a reduced charge and driving school (another $40 or so).

I have no points on my license and it's my first ticket in 6 years so I'm fairly hopeful in my outcome with this ticket.

That being said, if I can save someone else the trouble, you're damn right I'm gonna do it ;)

Use your common sense.

If you see oncoming traffic flashing two or three times, it's probably a cop.

If you see oncoming traffic flashing while you approach an overpass, onramp, etc., it's probably a cop.

And YES, I don't mind hitting the brakes for a few seconds to save my ass from hundreds of dollars in fines and hundreds in insurance hikes.

Yes, SHE did.

I hope she used the ticket as toilet paper before paying it.

Wow, I usually go 10 over on I-5 North (from Green Lake to Lynnwood).

Although there is a speed trap by Mountlake Terrace that I always slow down for.

During the day, you can't really get offended by flashing since it doesn't affect your vision.

At night, simply switch from headlights on-->off-->on.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you :D

I think saving people the cost of a speeding ticket is quite honorable!

We all know the law, we all know the consequences of the law, it's not difficult to obey the law, and the police pull over a LOT less people than they could. Some towns use it for revenue generation, but I think for the most part it is in the interest of public safety. Even if they do it for revenue generation, it wouldn't bother me. They're reducing the tax burden of the general public by punishing people who knowingly break the law. Think of it as a voluntary tax.

I used to flash, I don't anymore.

The police are trying their best to keep the roads safe and speeds down to a sane level. If someone is breaking the law by speeding, they deserve what they get. If you can't abide by the law, then you should have the privilege of driving revoked. Too many people are injured or killed by idiot drivers who mistakenly think they don't have to pay attention to the speed limit.

On the contrary, if I see a person who is speeding or driving recklessly, I'll do everything in my power to make sure they get caught.

What the police and lawmakers fail to realize is that it is not speeding that kills, but the rather sudden deceleration caused when someone who doesn't know what they're doing or is driving like an idiot causes an accident. That can happen at any speed. Speeding, per se, causes a lot less death and injury than some of the other crap people do that is not illegal - i.e. cutting people off, left turns from the right lane, stopping suddenly on a busy road, etc.

Of course, that means most old people would be getting all the tickets and not have a lisence, and they vote more than the young people do - AARP. Hence the current laws - since old people drive slow anyway.

When laws make sense I support them - speeding laws don't. So yes, I flicker my lights every time.

Jaywalking is a crime as well, why don't they arrest all those people and charge them a couple of hundred per offense.

And I suppose you know this because you are some type of expert on road affairs? Show me some evidence that this isn't just your opinion. You can't - the experts have already spoken and they are the ones who back the speed limits.

Speeding is the least likely cause of a dangerous traffic accident. Failure to stop, following too closely, not checking mirrors, not PAYING attention (cell phone, makeup, kids, falling asleep) etc. result in more accidents.

If you can't drive 70MPH in the left lane of an interstate, you shouldn't be able to drive period. 55MPH is just stupid and a method for revenue generation.

Virginia cops get an erection when they see out of state plates. I normally set my cruise at 8 over on 85 and 95. They are even worse off from the major interstates.

They get paid from these fees. That's the equivalent of letting a fat man behind the counter at McDonald's...Stupid and dangerous.

I had my cruise set 80 in a 70MPH zone in NC. I crossed the NC-VA state line and didn't think to adjust my cruise. Couple miles later, I see the lights in my rear view mirror :(

But I'm not complainin'. I got caught plain and simple
