not evidence but i saw on the history channel the autobahn has less deaths per mile of highway than all US highways combined

and their are a lot more drivers per mile of highway on the autobahn

punishment for tailgating and other offenses is very severe
they have a lot of others differences in their system as well and IMO is vastly superior to ours

but they do have a much stricter licensing

I never flash because there are too many meanings, it could mean your high beams are on, or your head lights are off, or you're a gang banger so shoot me, or there's a killer in your back seat, etc...

;)

No, flashing highbeams can blind other drivers. Not worth a large accident. If a person is speeding, they deserve to get nailed. Thats my 2 cents.

Fsck no, I never understood why people do this.

Just drive ~5MPH speed limit and you should be ok.

I once had a friend get stopped for doing 3MPH over 35 in the city DOWN A HILL:|

How is a cop supposed to approach a car who's doing 3 MPH over? Thats ridiculous. "You know how fast you were going?" Just seems like a laughable situation. Did he get a ticket?

My friend's mom got one for going 2 over and she took it to court and LOST. I didn't even think radar detectors were that accurate. Also, if any of you are going to North Seattle, specifically LFP go 2 under.

Thats BS. Car Speedometers aren't even that accurate.

I flash everytime, and almost everyone does in this area (Cincinnati). What's funny is when an entire line of 4 or 5 cars in a row flashes you. I just had this done to me about 4 days ago. I wasn't speeding, so I didn't have to brake, but it gives me an incentive to look for the cop to see where he is hiding.

Yeah, I know it's something you could do, but it's almost like a fairytale these days, since most drivers will be offended if you flash your high beams...and the cars in front of you will probably extend a gesture out the window as well. All in all, I don't think it'd work, so I don't bother.

During the day, you can't really get offended by flashing since it doesn't affect your vision.

At night, simply switch from headlights on-->off-->on.

I usually pop on my Fog lights.

theres a couple spots where cops routinely hide to catch speeders. the road goes from a 40mph speed limit down to a 25mph speed limit for maybe a quarter of a mile, and then becomes a 40mph road again. the 25mph zone is kinda ridiculous, all you're doing is passing a few houses, and then all of the sudden it's a 'residential' zone. when i see a cop camping out in that quarter mile, i'll warn oncoming traffic. but other than that, i usually dont bother to.

just wondering, is it really considered illegal (as the OP suggested?)

Well maybe it's my area...with all the snooty trophy wives around here and businessmen, I'd say that "most" of the people on the road wouldn't know what I'm doing. I don't think I've ever seen it done for me either, so meh. :)

Of course, that means most old people would be getting all the tickets and not have a lisence, and they vote more than the young people do - AARP. Hence the current laws - since old people drive slow anyway.

Those "experts" are looking for ways for the police departments to obtain more income and REVENUE. It is ignorant for you to ignore the fact that bad driving is the cause of deaths and instead point to ....speed? wtf?

BTW, I'm posting this b/c I got a ticket in bumfvck Virigina last week on my way up to Baltimore and I saw a motorcycle cop today camping out so I flashed my lights at the next 6 cars I saw coming.

Ticket was for 80 in a 65 (no reckless charge). The cop was the NICEST cop I've ever gotten and was very pleasant. $49 processing fee + $5 for each mile over. $125.

But I'm not taking any fuggin points by paying it off, so I've already called a lawyer in Virginia and it's gonna cost me $500 in court costs (I get a 25% discount due to legal insurance so that brings it down to 375). And I'll likely get a reduced charge and driving school (another $40 or so).

I have no points on my license and it's my first ticket in 6 years so I'm fairly hopeful in my outcome with this ticket.

That being said, if I can save someone else the trouble, you're damn right I'm gonna do it ;)

Virginia cops get an erection when they see out of state plates. I normally set my cruise at 8 over on 85 and 95. They are even worse off from the major interstates.

I had my cruise set 80 in a 70MPH zone in NC. I crossed the NC-VA state line and didn't think to adjust my cruise. Couple miles later, I see the lights in my rear view mirror :(

But I'm not complainin'. I got caught plain and simple

Did you get a ticket?

If so, how much did your insurance premium go up?

Policymakers are not experts - they are politicians. They make laws to stay in office. And yes, I am an expert - in a way. I am an ER physician and I see the consequences of road accidents every day - more than most people. Speeding is rarely the reason.

Get a CB. You'll hear something like "There's a bear sitting at the u-turn northbound at the 27 over 3." all the time.

I almost never see anyone flash their high beams anymore though. CB and radar detector is the only warning in this area.

Calmly explain to the traffic judge that you were on your way to a Staples Tuesday sale with a legit printable coupon. Trust me they'll go for it and tear up the ticket!

Problem solved :)

The cop asked me where I was going, and I told him that I was on my way to Baltimore for my uncle's funeral (actually true). He said "hmmm" and asked for my license and registration.
