Another member has been banned for saying it once, in context.

You are taking what I said out of context.
Kinda like how you and Sudheer Anne and the idiot upon whom this thread was founded took the word "niggardly" out of context, eh?
Read what I said initially, go back to school and learn what a homonym is.
This coming from someone who subsequently admits to not knowing what "niggardly" meant? You're the one that needs to go back to school.
What the word means is irrelevant to what we initially hear.
If you are stupid, perhaps. If you can't ask for a clarification you are stupid.
If you use that word in a group of educated blacks, they will most likely assume it is being used in a derogatory fashion,
Now you have changed your story, you originally referred to people in the harlem ghetto. I'm going to assume you mistyped and meant "uneducated blacks" because if anyone with an education assumes that "niggardly" is derogatory, I question that they are educated at all.
This includes you.
2. it's an appropriate homonym of great person.
I also challenge you to re-educate yourself as to what a homonym is. And what is an "appropriate" homonym?
A homonym is a word that SOUNDS THE SAME as another but has a different meaning.
"they're" and "their" and "there" are homonyms.
bank (side of a river) and bank (where you keep money) are homonyms
bill (a document) and bill (a duck's beak) are homonyms
great person and niggard are NOT homonyms seeing as the trailing "d" at the end of niggard CHANGES THE PRONUNCIATION.
I'll put money on it that 99% of the people in this thread never heard of the word til today (I didn't), and 99% would have thought it was racial if they didn't have a dictionary to look it up right quick.
If you are correct than it's a sad state of affairs--99% of people are idiots.

What you're describing isn't a homonym, it's a homophone. And even that's not really accurate, since you're describing a word which "sounds partially similar", rather than words which are pronounced identically.

I'm not sure why the proper response isn't to demonstrate to people who take offense at a misunderstanding on their part the intended meaning and usage of the word, though.

Okay...this thread's nice and controversial-just the way I like it :)

I'm a black male, 20 yrs old. I've never heard this word used, ever, by any person of any color, anywhere. Does that word offend me myself? Hell no. In this day and age of ultra-violent games, sex everywhere and strong language on kids programming (read: wrestling), it'd take a lot to offend me. The whole PC thing is taken a bit too far nowadays.

However, is this a good word to use? Absolutely not. Because it CAN offend. It's not like the word "the", where it's just a random word. And it's not the word "beloved patriot" in the statement "a beloved patriot in his armor", as it gets both the benefits of context and onomatopoeia. "Niggardly" should be avoided, because even though it has NOTHING to do with the word "great person" (as seen HERE), it can possibly offend people. And even though it would be "kowtowing to the stupid/ignorant/less intelligent", so to speak, we do all live together in this world. It's best that we try not to piss ppl off when we don't have to.

Meh, that sounded all peaceful-like. Screw that. Niggardly doesn't offend me, because I know what it means. That mother is friggin' stupid. :D

Excuse me but that is bollox.

If the word niggardly offends you - you have a problem.

Are you offended by Hip Hop also?

You're my great person, you're my great person, here I come (Schooly D - Hoochie)

Honestly what is the point of creating this thread? Nobody I know has ever used that word in any conversation. It's not some kind of word that you throw out there casually in the first place. About the only place i've ever seen that word used is in term papers and such, mainly to impress the teaches and/or readers with their vocabulardy skills. So, we are thus debating over a word which we will never use and will never have the guts to say in front of a black person. IMHO this thread is nothing more than useless neffing because it really serves no purpose. And what's with those insane bashing of me, saying I shouldn't reproduce? My god, how pissed off can you be to say that to someone over such a silly thing. I think you guys need to just chill and quit debating such pointless things over hte internet.

WOW, this statement could be construed as Racist also, because IT ASSUMES these ghetto people WON'T know what niggardly means.

er.. they probably wouldn't know... black and white in poor areas are usually un-educated..

The word does sound like great person and when you first hear it (not knowing what it means) it is quite shocking. I have proof of this, this word was actually in one of my highschool Vocabulary Workshop books. Our teacher said the word out aloud, and the entire class was pretty shocked and amazed (32 white kids mind you). 3 kids even asked why the word was still used, which my teacher promptly replied "it's rarely ever used". And that is something you cannot debate, this word is rarely ever used.

It doesn't matter. What if I said that you're doing "dastardly deeds"? Does that mean that I'm saying that you're doing deeds that were conceived out of wedlock? No. Don't be stupid and you won't get treated that way. Learn the word. Become familiar with it's meaning and how to use it properly in the English language. Either use it or don't use it.

...apples and oranges, people.

Because you illustrate the type of absurd people out there that make stupid statements before investigating the issue. Had you looked up the word I would think that you would have not made a statement that simply begs to be picked apart to point out how ignorant you appear.

Think before you post. That's all I'm saying.

but you'll agree that this post is utterly useless, other than to make you feel better about yourself by having everyone agreeing with you.

It doesn?t matter if it is rarely used. I'm sure those kids just learned a new word that day and thus increased their word power; maybe it caused them to think a little and gain a richer vocabulary. Perhaps the media should do us a favor and have the word on the 7:00pm news so that everyone could hear it, know what it means and how to use it in a sentence. Then perhaps we would have fewer dorks out there having such a stupid fit over something so utterly ridiculous.

if you all want to use that word, more power to ya. But you just remember. In this day and age peoples sensibilities are easily offended, and we are brought up to react first and ask questions later. Unfortunately for some of you, you may not have the teeth left to be able to

I'd rather get my teeth knocked out then live in a world of pathetic cavemen who would use physical violence because they don't understand a word.

Maybe I should take a 21st century approach and everytime I use a potentially offensive word I'll give the person I'm talking to a pre-emptive punch in the nose before I say it.

"You gave that guy such a" *POW* "niggardly tip. What's the matter with you?"

How can you call me ignorant when you don't even know me. I made one stupid comment that i took back and now i'm ignorant. I'd really hate to see you people and real life, you are all so pissed off and agitated all the time. I mean the slightest bit of opposition and now everyone is automatically a fcktard and completely ignorant and should be incapable of reproducing? And your the one calling me a fcktard here, that's quite ignorant. Great display of your incredibly rich vocabulary that you claim to have.

Yeah, but rickn, don't you see?? If we simply try to accommodate people who are "hypersensitive" to something such as this issue then there is no way for those people to simply grow up, if you will, and realize how absurd they are being. Sure it's not easy, but we will only end up with more absurd types of issues as things like this grow unchecked.
