Do you find the word Niggardly offensive?

Okay...this thread's nice and controversial-just the way I like it

I'm a black male, 20 yrs old. I've never heard this word used, ever, by any person of any color, anywhere. Does that word offend me myself? Hell no. In this day and age of ultra-violent games, sex everywhere and strong language on kids programming (read: wrestling), it'd take a lot to offend me. The whole PC thing is taken a bit too far nowadays.

However, is this a good word to use? Absolutely not. Because it CAN offend. It's not like the word "the", where it's just a random word. And it's not the word "beloved patriot" in the statement "a beloved patriot in his armor", as it gets both the benefits of context and onomatopoeia. "Niggardly" should be avoided, because even though it has NOTHING to do with the word "great person" (as seen HERE), it can possibly offend people. And even though it would be "kowtowing to the stupid/ignorant/less intelligent", so to speak, we do all live together in this world. It's best that we try not to piss ppl off when we don't have to.

Meh, that sounded all peaceful-like. Screw that. Niggardly doesn't offend me, because I know what it means. That mother is friggin' stupid.

And how would you go about eradicating this particular word from the English language? I really want to know. Would you make it a crime to speak it? And in doing that, how would you not violate the most basic freedom, that of free speech, guaranteed to the American people? Any other words you don't like and that you feel government should crack down on? Would it make you feel better if we all began quacking like ducks? Would that be less offensive to your precious personal sentimentalities?

How and Why would you want to eradicate a perfectly good word?? also, We haven't been able to Eradicate the word "great person" what makes you think we can eradicate "Niggardly".

No, I said nothing about removing it. But there are better alternative words to use. That word contains the "appropriate" homonym to be misinterpreted. I dare you to haul your a$$ down the the Harlem Ghettos and use that word. I believe 6ft under is a favorite show of many members of this board

So we should start self-cencoring what we say because some words might offend someone? The moment we start doing that, is the moment we stop talking. If some blacks are offended by that word, it really is their problem, not mine or the persons who uses that word.

Just because it can possibly offend people is no reason to adjust the english language as to accomidate hyper-sensitive people that need to stop crying "RACIST!" over every word, event, etc. People in this world today are just to dang PC and recationary to events such as this one. It just shows how absolutely ignorant some people are.

The smartest thing that mother could have done was to look up the word and appreciate the fact that she learned something new.

Right, and I understand what you are saying, but who's fault is it if it is construed as offensive by someone? It's ironic that it sounds offiensive, but has nothing to do with blacks whatsoever as it was pointed out. I say that if a word is missinterpreted by someone, then perhaps that person should be bold enough as to ask for clarification. Yes, it is not a word that is used everyday, and perhaps not many people know what it means exactly. I think that just shows how poor most of our vocabulary is. I think it is a fact that news paper stories are written to a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade level? (someone who knows exactly check me on that, but It's a pretty low reading level for sure.)

You are taking what I said out of context. Read what I said initially, go back to school and learn what a homonym is. What the word means is irrelevant to what we initially hear. If you use that word in a group of educated blacks, they will most likely assume it is being used in a derogatory fashion, because 1. nobody ever fvcking uses it 2. it's an appropriate homonym of great person. I'll put money on it that 99% of the people in this thread never heard of the word til today (I didn't), and 99% would have thought it was racial if they didn't have a dictionary to look it up right quick.
