Tilapia are fish that has become hugely popular in the US and elsewhere recently. China is the worlds largest exporter by far and if you buy tilapia in the US you are probably getting Chinese or Viet Nam raised fish.

Tilapia has been in the news since it is, apparently, fed pig, cow and chicken shit in China and elsewhere. See links:

Do you buy and eat tilapia? Has the news of how they are raised changed your eating habits?

I eat it but did not know it was being raised in such poor conditions. Will have to try and find U.S. supplied fish from now on.

Sounds efficient.

On a more serious note, I heard farmers use chicken shit to fertilize corn fields so I'm not eating corn anymore either.

I voted 'Pie' because I am not sure if I have ever eaten it. I rarely order fish when I am out for dinner, unless I am at a sushi place.

Organic fertilizers include naturally occurring organic materials, (e.g. chicken litter, manure, worm castings, compost, seaweed, guano, bone meal) or naturally occurring mineral deposits (e.g. saltpeter). Poultry litter and cattle manure often create environmental and disposal problems, making their use as fertilizer

We love Tilapia, but the truth is there aren't many ocean fish you can eat with a clear conscience these days. I also love tuna, and the tuna business is a global disaster. Same with pretty much any ocean food species. Crustaceans are doing well in some spots, and there is actually a boom in lobsters, so that's some consolation.

This is why only Americans will survive when the aliens come to harvest humans....they'll be like "don't pick any Americans, do you know what they eat?!?"

I don't buy any fish that has been thru china. Just don't trust them with my food. I used to buy Icelandic cod, but then the company decided to catch the fish and send them to china for processing. Now nearly every single package of fish in the store says " product of china" on it.
Thankfully I have a source for Lake Superior whitefish, salmon and lake trout nearby.

I don't eat it, but never out of concerns about where it's farmed or what it's fed. It's just not good fish, it's the most boring, flavorless, textureless seafood on earth. I'd rather pay a little more for something I enjoy.

I refuse to eat anything that is from China. Do not trust them at all.
I've noticed more and more frozen vegetables with China as the origin lately.

Nice, delicate flaky decidedly NOT fishy taste. Why do you think it's so damn popular?

Yes. I eat garbage fish. I also eat salmon, haddock, perch, bass, pike, the list goes on.

To be fair, most foods that come from US farms or waterways are just as bad if not worse in terms of what they're fed or contaminated with, so what's the difference. You realize that most of your major US produced chicken is fed ground up chicken meal - which is basically leftover chicken bits from processing including beaks and feet? Yeah, tasty tasty chicken. Still gonna eat it!

don't knock it dawg, i bought a pack from Ranch 99 for 3.99. It was effing good for the price.

The thought of eating tilapia raw (for use in sushi) just blows my mind. Are you srs, or did you just buy the "sashimi grade tilapia" for use in steam tilapia (ie asian style)?

Chemicals and carcinogens, that's what we generally do not find American produce and meat.
