Catholics don't take the Bible seriously, especially not the old testament. Why? Because it wasn't written by God. Anyone who says otherwise is just falling for lies. I mean come on.. think about what the Bible is.
It's not a magical book. It's a collection of writings that was assembled by medieval clerics. Even the teacher of my pre confirmation class, back in the day, said that the Bible doesn't have to be taken literally. And the pope himself said that evolution is okay to believe in.

Zealots need to remember one thing.. Christianity is not based on fact. Yet you treat your BELIEFS as fact, spouting it off in arguments. How can you even pretend to argue with opinions and beliefs? Everyone possesses the mental capacity to determine truths on his own, yet some people just believe what they hear. How do you know that the preacher hasn't been lying to you your whole life and that God is going to send you to hell for believing him?

glen, My own thinking on why the literacy trip is that people have various kinds of experiences that give the impression they have had a personal experience with God. The experience has by its very nature a compelling certainty. Such people, after a fashion, know God is real. And they not only know that God is real, the experiences are very often life transforming and incredibly for the better. Once you know how profoundly effective and vital such a transformation is, you will defend it with your life. There is no certainty like personal experience. But since most people are culturally isolated and know little about the teachings and religions of others, then come quite naturally to take their own tradition with extra seriousness. If you read the Bible, judging from what I see from Christians, they get the impression that it's a narrow path and only path and so on, so they take everything as seriously as possible. When somebody gives you a treasure map to a gold mine and you find the gold, you don't want any changes to the treasure map. But there are a million maps to the same treasure, or as one adept put it. "There are a million paths in life and they all lead nowhere. Choose a path that has a heart."

Mulla Nasrudin was out walking with a student when an enlightened one approached and pointed to the sky. (There is one truth and it covers all). He is a madman thought the student. The Mulla, who was carrying a rope held it up. (And ordinary people try to reach it by means as ridiculous as climbing into the sky by a rope.) Good thought the student. If he tries anything funny the Mulla has warned him we will tie him up.

The world is not billions of years old, and we did not come from sea-dwelling micro organisms.

The world IS probably somewhat over 6000 years old, and man was created.

However, some form of microevolution is of course a given.

So, according to all of you, I'm a stupid, hypocritic, ignorant zealot.

Whatever works.

Dragging out the handful who don't believe in in it and riddiculing them is missguided, as they are such an incredibly small minority it servers no purpose.
I know they are ass chappers.
I really do, and they annoy me too, but sheesh...every religion has a handful of numnuts.

It depends on the definition of evolution, and it is not in the dictionary.

Evolution as proposed bt Darwin as the origination of the species has never been proven and we now know all humans had a common ancestor and he was not pro-magnon man or any missing link! Science has all but disproven evolution at it is commomly interpretated.

The definition has been expanded to include any change in an organism and even those changes brought about by artifical means.

The posters in schools showing man evolving from a chimp through various phases to modern man is one of the biggest jokes ever perpetrated on society! No proof was ever needed, only theory. In this case theory equals lie.

so do you believe in god simply because you dont believe in evolutuion? oh and btw you have been quite mislead!

"There are a thousand and one gates leading into the orchard of mystical truth. EVery human being has his own gate. We must never make the mistake of wanting to enter the orchard by any gate but our own. To do this is dangerous for the one who enters and also for those who are already there." (Elie Wiesel, Night)

This Christian has no problem allowing science inform on the mysteries of our past. The hypothesis, theories, and debates on evolution serve only to deepen understanding of both God and the mysteries of life. Fundamentalisim in any tradition acts to foreclose further discovery.

So, I confess I haven't read this, but I wanted to know.

What's the score? Who is winning, and have we solved the mysteries of the ages yet?

I just want to be kept up to date :p

2000 years ago, intellegent people knew that the world was flat, although lack of evidence was present.
600 years ago, intellent people knew that earth was the center of the universe, despite no one had actual proof.
100 years ago, the atom was the smallest particle in the universe.
Today people know that macro-evolution is truth beyond a shawdow of a doubt, despite the fact it can not be proven.

Are we (living in the 21st century) so immune to ignorance and the ability to be wrong?

The problem with all these "scientific facts" is that assumtions are made to fit the theories.

Earth was the center of the universe because people refused to believe that the world as they knew it wasn't the most significant celestrial object in all of outer space.

The atom was the smallest particle in the universe because of the assumption that it could not be divided.

Now evolution is true based on the assumption that there is no God, and the Bible can't be the real inspired Word of God.

Assumptions are broken by looking at things from a different perspective, at a different angle. Have you honestly considered the earth only being 6000 years old, man made in God's own image? Because frankly, I have considered a ~4.5 billion year old earth, and the theory of evolution, and I'm back to creation, not by facts or faith, but by evidence. There is no absolute proof either way, I am willing to admit that. Are you?

Yet I'm a "numbnut" and an "ass-chapper" as you put it. Well get some vasoline, you're going to need it if you you're going to believe in anything "accepted as fact by most people who can read" and because the latest Scientic American said so.

I'm confused here. How can you be a Christian and believe in evolution? It's one or the other. Either God put us here, or we evolved.

Ummm... no

The Christians I know can be broadly divided into two camps, those who believe in a dynamic creation , and those who believe in a static one.
The former group have no problem with evolution, because it is merely a mechanism for change. The second group would find evolution more difficult to swallow.

It saddens me to see how closed minded the mass of Christians are. I know of nowhere in the bible used by Catholics at least (I was born and raised Catholic, and still attend a Catholic Church every week) that it says that evolution did not happen. Who is to say that the 7 'days' of creation were not the steps of evolution? Just because the bible says God created us does not mean that it had to be in the *snap fingers and things appear* style. What makes you believe that God didnt create the smallest organism and then guide it to evolve to each creature that exists today?

Of course there are many things not mentioned in the bible that varoius Christian religions practice, like only being allowed a single partner in marriage. Also some things written in the bible are known to be a guess. For example, its not a known that there were 3 wise men that gave gifts to Jesus when he was born, only that there were 3 gifts and thus it is assumed that there were 3 wise men that gave them. Also, As somebody mentioned, the bible is NOT a book written by God, it was written and assembled by normal human beings.

Mathew 2:

1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi[1] from the east came to Jerusalem 2and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east[2] and have come to worship him."
3When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ[3] was to be born. 5"In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written:
6" 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'[4] "
7Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him."
9After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east[5] went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
