<< Which fantasy book is this quote from? >>

WOW, what a clever retort.
That does it, I'm turning atheist!

<< If you believe in God, you have to believe in the devil. How can there be an ultimate good when there's no ultimate evil? >>

Why do you think good and evil have to be seperate? If you think along a taoist point of view you could say that there is one supreme that is in prefect balance. I have always believed that a persons capacity to do good was only matched by their ability to do evil. It is up to us to choose which we use.

correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't the bible written by *several* different authors based on *their* recollections/interpretations?

Wouldn't that make it more credible than if it was written by just one person? Also, the bible spans a huge amount of time, way more than one life span.

no, it actually makes it *less* credible in my eyes. they weren't various chapters that were then brought together for the first time, it was more like a work in progress that was authored by different people. and the church has done and altered some questionable things. and as goes with most stories, the more time that you have to ponder/refine them, the better and more realistic they become.

let me drop some shrooms. if i see the devil it's blashpemy, if i see god it's devine. <shrugs> go figure. either way, humanity NEEDS something to believe in, and from the beginnings of time and the furthest reaches of the earth, most religions have begun the same way.

Have you read any of the posts here? If you want to discuss the devil (which is the topic) I would be happy to oblige. But as for discussing the origins of the bible and why you "should" believe is not something I care to do. I am not a "fisher of men", in fact I am quite the opposite. Believe what you want just try to be a good person. Like I have said many times in this thread, that is all that really matters. The bible was discussed here because this was a biblical discussion.

yeah i did, and i noticed that some people referred the bible, which is why i made my post.

but to stay on topic, i don't believe in "a devil". there is good and evil, and to cop out and say that the devil made someone do something bad instead of realizing that the person made their own personal decision is the easy way out.

Everybody's wonderin' what and where they they all came from
everybody's worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go
when the whole thing's done
but no one knows for certain
and so it's all the same to me
I think I'll just let the mystery be

Some say once you're gone you're gone forever
and some say you're gonna come back
Some say you rest in the arms of the Saviour
if in sinful ways you lack
Some say that they're comin' back in a garden
bunch of carrots and little sweet peas
I think I'll just let the mystery be

Everybody's wonderin' what and where they they all came from
everybody's worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go
when the whole thing's done
but no one knows for certain
and so it's all the same to me
I think I'll just let the mystery be

Some say they're goin' to a place called Glory
and I ain't saying it ain't a fact
but I've heard that I'm on the road to purgatory
and I don't like the sound of that
I believe in love and I live my life accordingly
but I choose to let the mystery be

Everybody is wondering what and where they they all came from
everybody is worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go
when the whole thing's done
but no one knows for certain
and so it's all the same to me
I think I'll just let the mystery be

Why must we have a belief in the devil? I believe in Man and Government...that's enough for me, thank you very much :)

IIRC, the concept of one prime evil didn't come into existence until the christians made it (I can't recall what book one big evil first shows up..wouldn't be suprised if it is revalations, really). This points to mistranslations, habitual generalizations, and politicians, priests, and criminals needing something to blame :D

Elita1: I'm pretty sure that quote about the greatest trick the devil played on mankind is from C.S. Lewis.
