Really - how long ago? Can you give an example of a period when the parties were respectable? We wish they were but I think this is being romantic - they've always been full of self-serving dirty tricksters with varying degrees of unmitigated gall.

Second: Huh? The reason people are partisan is the result of morals? Does not compute.

I am certainly conservative (specifically, a paleoconservative). However, I have voted Democrat over 90% of the time (local, state and federal) throughout my voting history and consider myself a Conservative Democrat. Take it, most of the Democrats that I vote for are usually at least center-right.

How do like being in the minority here amongst all the rabid insane Limbaugh, Hannity and Levin loving Republicans?

Political parties are like high-school cliques, but rather than forming semi-naturally, they're guided along.

I also don't believe that "most people are fairly open to examining issues and making decisions" as a previous poster had claimed.

Just so you know, it appears quite likely that the poll you are referencing is fraudulant.

Three questions for you:
1.) At what time do you think both major parties were fairly respectable?
2.) What parts of the Constitution do you believe are being ignored?
3.) What ideals do you believe were laid out for us by the founders, and what are you basing this on?

Very interesting slant. Simple and yet it's the best explanation I've seen so far.

You know after watching the Rush interview on Leno last week and he said something along the lines of "why should I have to give up my view while you get to keep yours?" to Leno, it was as clear as ever that everyone has their opinion and they want to feel justified in that thought no matter what, usually.

Leno wanted to hold onto his point of view while asking Rush to give on his and the reverse was true for Rush to Leno and I see that as the real problem with most people out there that are so partisan that they cannot even begin to look at the other side from a 3rd person perspective.

I tend to try and put myself into the shoes of "the other side" as in whatever I'm in disagreement with at the time and try to see things from their POV. Sometimes it just doesn't change my opinion, but often times it does.

Whats really clear to me is as Americans/individuals we all really want mostly the same things out of life, it's just the most vocal minority of either side that seem to be the most polarizing.

IMO both parts only goal is to maximize and increase this wedge that exist only to continue their power and control, it's not about whats best for us or the nation or the world, just all about power anymore.

There was a point and time in this country when that was not always the case, I think...

Wow.

I don't think our elections get a lot clearer on the choice than the last two elections.

Yup, they were crystal clear -- both candidates were worthless, one a little more than the other.

Maybe I should have put "I hope".

Really it's hard to say what if any time was really ideal or less of what we have now since it's all skewed through the eyes of those that wrote the history...

In fact it's so evenly split that it has voted with the winner in every single presidential election in the last century but 2. (2008 being #2!) As goes Missouri, so goes the nation. (92% of the time at least)

You're talking to Dave though, he's the guy that thought McCain had such an insurmountable lead that he didn't even need to campaign... all the way up to his epic ass kicking. He's the guy that thought McCain was going to go to Hawaii. (Obama ended up winning the state by forty-seven points)

I know that Dave has been banned many times before, but someone keeps letting him back. I wish they would stop.

I remember the last few weeks of the campaign when quite a few people were worried that, with obama seemingly so far ahead, people would get complacent and not get out to vote for him. I always hoped that dave, even though contrary to his real opinion, was issuing this opinion in the hopes that people would pay attention to the goal line and not the 10 or 20 yard line.
