Yes, but the habits that the US has leads it to be one of the cleanliest countries, while the habits that India has leads it to be one of the most disease-stricken countries. India is one of the world leaders in disease outbreaks due to poor hygiene.

And now the Indians that moved here want us to accept their disgusting, disease-causing habits. By defending their bad habits, they are perpetuating the same bad hygiene that plagues their native land.

dude,
i think you're missing the point. Either you're handling feces with your bare hands... or you're not handling feces with your bare hands. That's the bottom line... you can use a fire extenguiser foam to clean your ass if you'd like and it's still gonna be more sanitary than putting your hands in there.

Let me give you an analogy. I work on cars a lot and i use gloves all the time, even though i wash my hands when i m done. Why? Because if i don't i get grime and grease under my nails, in the cracks of my skin and various other places. There is a reason why people tend to use some kind of protection when dealing with these kind of substances...

Oh come on, you think your hands never touch bacteria or germs or other kinds of filthy stuff during the day? For all you know, that you guy just shook hands with might've sneezed into them a couple of minutes back. Or the person that opened the door just ahead of you might've been picking their nose! Look at it this way, if somehow sh!t got slapped on to your cheek (the one on your face, not your butt :p ), would you want to wipe it away with TP or make sure your rinse, lather and repeat endlessly with your own hands? That's how you clean your backside with water. You first rinse it to get the goop out and then you scrub it and then you go and scrub the hand that scrubbed it. It's clean, it's safe and it's environment-friendly :)

I agree with the other poster that I am probably taking the arguments too personally. I think I've had my say so I'll leave it at that. Apologies to Skoorb for calling him an asshole. I should reserve epithets for worse transgressions ;)

Yeah germs are everywhere, but handligh feces is worse than not handlight feces. It's making the problems worse rather than better. If for some reason i was forced to deal with sh!t, i'd definitely make the hardest effort not to use my bare hands.

But yeah water is better than TP, but not water+bare hands.

I think the sanitary rating goes like this:

bidet > power washer > TP > fire extenguisher > bare hands

the less direct contact, the better

hahah that is soo sigged

My friend visited India and said the same. It's amazing that the outsourcing that's eroding our middle class is going to a country that hasn't yet perfected indoor plumbing.

On the contrary, the Harappa-Mohenjodaro cultures also known as the Indus Valley Civilization had indoor plumbing in 2300 B.C.

Indus Valley Civilization did not have true indoor plumbing. They had open aqueducts that ran parallel to some streets on a grid. Most of the homes in the inner area had a drinking well (not indoor plumbing). They also had private bathrooms - there were claypipes that took the $hit to the street sewer (this portion was covered). Same thing with their open to air sanitary system. They were the first ones to use "the grid" as a basis of an urban city center - and none of the theories that they had a pump system for freshwater been proven or any evidence found ...

whew ... City Planning history ... 7 yrs of architecture and planning school will do that to you ...
Uh.... how do you know this??? According to scientists it did.

It was named after the city of Harappa which it was centered around. Harappa and the city of Mohenjo-Daro were the greatest achievements of the Indus valley civilization. These cities are well known for their impressive, organized and regular layout. They have well laid our plumbing and drainage system, including indoor toilets. Over one hundred other towns and villages also existed in this region. The Harappan people were literate and used the Dravidian language. Only part of this language has been deciphered today, leaving numerous questions about this civilization unanswered.

But I guess we should just believe Dandruff... random idiot over actual knowledge. Seems like thats what most of this thread is about.

But he took this in architecture school and nothing he said contradicts your source. They didn't have running water, but the plumbing was confined to waste removal.

Yes this is true. Like in Turkey, much of the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and how Italy used to be.

But these days, most have it, probably like 90-95% of decent places.

Don't worry, if you're going there, you don't need to go to a superstore to get it, every corner market store or 'chemist' (like walgreens or cvs) carry it.

have fun. hehehee.

Apparently some public toilets in India consistently lack toilet paper and you wipe your rear with your hand (or something) and there is a communal bucket of water with a scoop that you rinse in. It sounded quite unreal and not very believable. I have some co-workers I could ask but it's so incredible they'd likely be offended.

I'm not talking about nice toilets in the capital, but maybe just some smaller towns or something.

I guess you learn something every day. Didn't really think about it I guess. I haven't traveled much outside the US - only on a Bahamas cruise and to the Philipppines - but both had paper.

To those who think the hand is cleaner/better than paper - are you serious? You are talking about putting your hand in feces for crying out loud. There's nothing clean or hygenic about that. I'm a guy who moistens his paper and I don't stop until it's free of brown. I also wash my hands with soap afterward just in case some nasty got through. That said, don't tell me about a bare hand and water being more clean. Yeah, I know that's TMI but in this thread I guess it fits.

Anyway, I can understand not using paper and washing your hands if it's not available because of the situation but to preach prefering it... No.

What I do not understand

1. Asswipers claiming it's prefectly clean after water+soap wash but they'd never use left hand and thinks it's filthy to use it. If it's clean as claimed, why is that?

2. Asswipers saying it's nasty that TP people don't wash their hands after the job. A dry hand that had no direct contact with sh1t is natier than a wet hand that's been playing with sh1t? I'd rather touch the dry door-knob of TP user than wet door-knob of asswiper.

3. Asswipers saying it's okay because they don't use left hand. When you cook or do anything, do you really use only right hand? If so, Why cripple yourself?

4. Asswipers saying TP users might get the poke through situation and that it's nasty. Hello? one in a million time poke through situation is nastier than everyday sh1t rubbing?

5. Asswipers saying that it's cleaner than using TP. Yeah, from the anus point of view, I agree. From all the other parts of point of view, no.

6. Asswipers saying that we should all accept it as it's their own culture. Yeah, it's all fine as long as you do it in your own land/people. But, you guys are everywhere. Everywhere with your filthy left hand. Wear a glove or something. Go ask Michael Jackson.

Once again.......You guys have the 2nd most population in the world and you guys are moving to everywhere on earth with that nasty culture/hand. Change it for rest of the world. If you're in India, ok, fine, what do I care? BUT you guys are here with us!!!

This thread is getting totally retarded. First of all, in India, I think 90% of urban dwellers use toilet paper, hence the toilet paper in most public places (90% at least in delhi).

Second, I seriously doubt any *normal* people from developing nations (again, this is not restricted to India, many parts of the middle east, Turkey, and as I said before, even 'Western' Italy used to (some probably still do)) STILL use their hands once they come to the United States.

I have not heard of one person that does that here, and I know thousands.

Third, to be totally honest, out of 10 people that leave a public restroom, 9 Anglos will NOT wash their hands, and you guys know that. I have observed minorities though, such as Indians, Asians, Hispanics, and Blacks, and they do so much more than Anglos. Disgusting. They hold their wanker and then shake your hands 5 minutes later.

This thread is really over exaggerating the reality of what goes on in modern parts of India.

Nice made-up on the spot statistics. I haven't been to India. The one person that talked about this situation to me that has gone to India painted a quite different picture. It was nowhere near 90% using TP. MAYBE 50% and that's being generous based on what she told me.

9/10 (90%) leaving the restroom without washing? No. I agree it's a problem but it's nowhere near that much. I'd say it's somewhere between 25% and 50% when pissing and maybe 5% when crapping.

No, I have no research or sources. Those are my own made-up statistics based on my own observations.

Nice on the spot statistics the one person you talked with made. Unless she went to rural areas, or very poor parts of major cities, she is grossly exaggerating if she says 50%. at least 90-95% of decent public toilets in major cities like Delhi and Bombay have toilet paper.

And regarding 25-50% not washing hands? I can't speak on where you live, but in Houston, the majority of people DON'T wash their hands after taking a piss.

edit: since you haven't even been to India, you really can't argue with me on what goes on in major cities there. I've been there twice this year. Again, it will depend on what class of places you go to and if you are in major cities or not. I cannot comment on rural areas, or very lousy establishments. If the person you talked to went along time ago, went to lousy establishments, or went to rural areas, she can be correct, I cannot comment on that. but 90% of decent places in metropolitan areas do not have this problem. 90% of where business people go, travellers go (unless you talk about bohemian backpacker types), and middle class and above people do not have this problem.

I did miss the word 'urban' in your previous post. So, I'll leave this be since I was talking about the population of the country as a whole.

Houston? Well, that is Texass .... ;)

jbaggins,
You are the first one who said that some people in India, in urban areas, do use TP. All the other Indian guys here were saying what I've posted above.
Also, what I got from the other Indians is that they still use their hands. Upon checking out their profile, I also noticed that they're, indeed, in the states. Even worse, they still do believe that it's THE clean method. How can I believe your data when real Indians are telling me something different than yours?

They probably wipe it on their cloth and you don't need to worry about it. Because it's perfectly clean with their hand+soap method.:disgust:

I don't wash my hands after taking a piss. If I use a public restroom the only thing I touch is my d!ck.

That could actually start a new debate / thread.

If you aren't carrying an STD, your penis is actually cleaner than the environment you are touching with your hands. So perhaps men should wash their hands BEFORE pissing so as to keep the penis clean. It's an idea that hit me a few years ago when I was working in hospital labs. At that time, I DID make sure to wash with soap BEFORE pissing and after.
