More from the article: "Anika Noni Rose, the black actress who voices the character of Princess Tiana, has insisted that people should look beyond the colour of the character.

?Not only is she the first black princess, she?s the first American princess. We?ve never had an American princess,? said Rose."

You Disney fans... so they've actually never even had an American princess?

Can't remember any... But isn't that an oxymoron? American princess indeed...

Didn't Snow White and Cinderella become princesses?

Edit: and Arial was an American princess... but a Mermaid.

Edit: Belle?

No, there are plenty of black racists.

The only racist people left in this country that aren't so backwoods they haven't seen a television set OR a minority in 30 years are the minorities themselves who fling the race card every chance they get.

Eh, you know I hate to disagree with you nik but there are still some regular everyday nutcases out there. Check out the Couer d'Alene Idaho white power annual gathering. Young folks in regular society with an ass-backwards understanding of the world. Don't underestimate the stupidity of people.

On the flip side, I would say that society in general recognizes these folks for the bigots they are and they are disadvantaging themselves more than minorities when they display their prejudices.

Honestly, I think it'd be nicer if she married a black prince. Not because I have anything against interracials, my gf is half Filipino, quarter black and quarter white and even if not for her I'd still only consider having an interracial child because I think they're awesome.. But in the context of a disney movie, I think it would've been nice to see an all black cast once. Just once.

Are you saying that whites will buy just as much of this stuff as they would if the princess was white (which is what you seemed to be saying up to this point) or are you saying that black people will buy enough of this stuff to make up for the whites that won't (which is what this last post implies)?

MotionMan

I first I was going to agree with you, except it's the KIDS who drive the purchases. Disney made serious bank on all the non-white heroines. Kids don't care. They love those dopey movies and stupid songs. They could care less about the color of the character.

But, you are probably right in a bump in purchases from black people. My guess is Disney will make MORE if the princess is not white. (Provided the end-product is not crap)

They should just make a film where all the characters change colors and races every 3.4 seconds to ensure they all get equal screen time.

By FAR, my biggest laugh of the day.:laugh::thumbsup:

I have already been proven wrong earlier in the thread. though I wasn't saying they were, I was just guessing and throwing darts. The REAL point being is they were "white" is it not?

No, that's not the real point. As you can see by my quoting of the article above. It's about there not being an American Disney princess yet as claimed by the woman who is the voice of the first African American princess. She is saying the fact this black princess is also American makes for two "firsts" here.

In reality she was about 12 years old when she saved John Smith (who was a real arsehole, by the way) and was never in love with him.

I've met more minority racists than White ones. Actually, I have never met an (openly) racist White person ever...

Most white people aren't openly racist, the ones who tend to hide it are the ones you need to worry the most about. the openly racist KKK types aren't the problem in America

Black, White whatever. The movie will make billions due to clever marketing.

Do you think that little white girls are going to want a black princess doll or black princess sheets? Do you think many white parents or grandparents will buy a black princess doll or black princess sheets for their daughter or granddaughter?

I commend Disney for trying, though.

MotionMan

Disney is a Global company. Lots of Black folks in the world. What's wrong with a white child with a black doll. I've seen black girls with white dolls all the time when I was growing up, of course it was rare to find black dolls at that time.

I did not say there was anything wrong with it. There is the world we want and the world we actually live in. The fact is that there is still a lot of racism in this world. To deny that is being ignorant.

I just cannot see a black princess doll selling as well as a white princess doll. I wish and hope I am wrong, but I fear I am not.

MotionMan

I think you're right. It's not about being racist, but people identify with people like themselves. Since there are many more white people than black people, it's not surprising that the market is larger for products aimed at whites.

People like Homerboy are just trying excessively hard to be "ultra PC" and pretend that demographics and targeting markets don't exist. He's being foolish. There are reasons that the advertisements that you see in predominately black areas are different than the ads you see in predominately latino areas or predominately white areas. Studies show that people respond more favorably to marketing when you market it to their demographic group.

Kinda following the mold of our current President's familial history. White on Black love (BHO's momma = white girl from Kansas, BHO's poppa = Black African from Kenya). This story should be celebrated!
