So some member on the forums got very angry with me because he hates gays and I told him that everyone should be treated equally.
My arguement is that there's no difference between hating someone based on sexual preference or hating someone based on race. (His arguement was to cuss at me, heh). See here's the key point: hating someone based on race is unfair because the person can't choose what ethnicity they are. Now, I argue that MANY gays do NOT choose to be gay, much like most of you don't choose to be heterosexual.
Many gays have expereienced trauma or are believed have a chemical imbalance in their brains that causes them to be gay. Therefore it's not their choice, it's who they are. And because of that key reason, I find it highly unfair to discriminate against them because of it. I mean, you wouldn't discriminate against someone who has down syndrome, would you? I see no difference at all.
However, I can already see a lot of people saying that I'm wrong and that they do have a choice. This is still up to debate but here's a few things to keep in mind.
1) They have found a higher level of a certain chemeical in the brain of deceased gays that could explain they sexual orientation. However, it's not for sure as it could also be a result of drugs to combat AIDS.
2) They genetically engineered sheep to be exclusively gay by changing a chemical in their brain. This implies that it's genetics.
3) There are many gays who are also religious. Their religious peers put great guilt on the gay community. These gays feel horrible because of who they are and are tormeneted each day. Don't you think if they could change, they would? Could you change your sexual orientation on whim? Didn't think so.
4) I have personally met many gays and the question comes up, "when did you know you were gay?". Every single one of them as replied, "I always just knew". You'd probably answer the same question if someone asked you about your sexual preference. It's a part of who they are.
note: this isn't to say some gays don't fit the criteria above but many of them do.
