Diner Owner Yells At Child To Shut Up, Mother Gets Indignant

Should have told the parents to kindly leave. If they dont and it resorts to yelling then do it to the parents, not the child for having shitty parents to begin with.

As the best friend of someone with two very young children, I sympathise with the parents.

The terrible twos are no joke.

If only there were some way to obtain, prepare and consume food that didn't subject a diner full of people to a temper tantrum from your unruly child...

I'll side with the owner for what she did. No way would I let patrons sit for 40 minutes and listen to that kid. I go to a restaurant to eat and enjoy the meal.
Irresponsible parents should be ashamed and just let their kids "be themselves" and allow them to grow up that way. See how their future turns up.
---------------
Another approach would be get one of the parents to one side of the restaurant and tell them attend to their child's need and find out why child is making that noise.
If they can't or are not willing to to that, ask calmly and tell to leave the establishment since they are making it an inconvenience for the other patrons.

I'll side with the owner, but I wish everyone in the restaurant business recognized the rule of serving a family with children: There must ALWAYS be food infront of a child (start with some crackers if you can't get anything out of your kitchen in less than a minute) OR there must be a bill in front of the parents (I hate trying to keep kids in control an extra 15+ minutes waiting to pay)

I agree. but NONE of this is on the restaurant. it's on the parents. IF you have a 2 yr old you take snack stuff. When you sit down you give them something. You also give them toys. etc

siding with the owner. screaming kids are a nightmare. i was parent-for-a-day and holy shit, talk about the best deterrent to procreating.

My parents love to tell the story about when I was a bit over 1 year old and being a little shit in the restaurant. My dad took my plate of spaghetti and turned it upside down on my head. Shut me right up. That'd probably be called abuse nowadays. So many parents are inconsiderate pricks now, they think the world should revolve around them and their crotch dumplings. News flash mom and dad, nobody gives a shit about your hellspawn but you.

I wouldnt yell at a child.
But if I were in a pissy mood I might be tempted to scream at grown ups in possession of a screaming child.

It was a smaller place and the owner was busting her ass trying to keep tickets on time. She apparently said something to the parents several times but they ignored her and let the kid keep screaming.

When we went to Scotland ~12 years ago, it was difficult to find a restaurant that would serve you, if you had a kid.

Must be ahead of the times.

I seem to remember when I was a kid that getting corrected in my behavior by any adult would also have follow on repercussions for me. There was some kind of implicit assumptions that other adults reprimanding you deserved at the very least some consideration. That is totally gone now and has been for a while (10 years at least).

Worked at the prepared foods section of Whole Foods.

One day this kid is reaching under the glass to touch the hot steam table. Didn't notice at first but when I did I used a moderately alarmed voice telling him not to touch anything. Mom got mad and walked away without whatever she ordered.

Another day some kid is running his face along the cold case, all 15 or so feet of it, just rubbing his snotty face all over every surface he can. Told him to stop, got a written comment card from that mom about it.

Yet another day some mom flips out in the bakery department about not telling their kid what to do because they are an indigo child exploring their space or some such craziness. Had to look up indigo child, needless to say if someone describes their kid that way feel free to ignore everything else they say.

All that being said that IME any time a parent is indignant about someone else reprimanding their kid 9 out of 10 times they are in the wrong.

I would have just yelled at the parents instead to make more of an effort to keep their kid quiet or they'll have to pay and leave right away.
