DigiTimes: Nvidia to unveil dual-GPU GeForce GTX 590 in mid-March

I wonder how much noiser they will be... I just got 2 580's yesterday... I'll probably step up to 590's if they are released within 90 days (end of May). What do you think about 590 vs 580? Also, if they will be released by end of May?

Based on nvidia's past history, you will get better performance from 3 580s than you will from 2 of these 590s.

I would stick to 2 gtx580's in sli till the new 28nm chips come out at the end of the year.

There is so many variables to guessing dual gpu performance its allmost impossible.

1. who can cherry pick the best chips.
2. what parts of the chips should be cut down to use less power but still get the best performance
3. which chip do they choose (6970 or 6950, gtx580 or 570)
4 should they use a dual bios with 2 different clock settings to save power and sneak under the 300 watt limit. AKA turbo button. 🙂
5. which chips are faster and how much faster are they to begin with. 6970 vs gtx580 (example).
6. will the sli/x-fire release drivers for the dual chip cards have good working x/fire sli performance.
7. overclocking and cooling issues for maximum performance.
8. how much memory to put on the card, (power usage)

I'm sure there are more.

1. That is nothing either AMD or nV have control over. Just so you know, every GF110 GPU has different voltage, so essential they are all cherry picked.
2. There are already cut down chips, all that matters are the clocks (as grooveriding said).
3. 6950/6970 is the same GPU, 570/580 is the same GPU.
4. That is not going to happen, the card is still over 300W
5. We know which chips are faster.
6. Drivers are a variable with every card.
7. Overclocking won't affect which GPU's or clocks they use.
8. The amount of power used by the memory is negligible as shown by 6870 1gb vs 6950 1gb vs 6950 2gb

I'd sure hope it was released by then. I doubt it'll be worth replacing 2x 580's with though. It's bound to be lower performance, because of power limitations.

It'll use less power and in all likelihood give all of the performance anyone needs. On a single monitor, anyway.

Integrating though can be problematic. If one of your cards goes belly up, you still have the other to use while waiting for RMA.

Of course you could always return/trade one and have TriSLI. :muhahaha:

Sometimes the step ups are really inexpensive... but hey, if the 28nm chips are THAT much better, then I'd probably be getting those anyway. Why are the 29nm chips supposed to be a huge gain?

I hate to say it, but that was a great post, I agree.
I think thats a first!😱 Don't do it again!😀

I'm willing to bet the 590 will actually play better than the 6990 though. Forget the benchmarks and do what they were designed to do! Play games!

LOL.. ^this..

I do have to say though that any reviewer worth his salt will do tests on this card at high-to-ultra-high resolutions (2560x1600 and up).

It would be pathetic if they compare the 6990 & 590 at 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 even though most people have those resolutions.

How on earth can that happen? Aren't 2 590s "Quad" SLI? I know 3 580s are beastly but 2 590s should have massive OC potential and better cooling (can be spaced out well in the case).

Unless of course, the 590s use 560 GPUs which would suck balls. However, the rumor is that the 590 has 3GB of VRAM so it has to be 580 GPUs... right?

Crysis 2 dx11 benchmark should be available for both launch reviews.

Will that be a important game to have in your win column ? 🙂

Not really pathetic, what percentage of gamers do you think have a 30 inch 1200$ monitor? 1 or 2 %.

Go run some Metro with max setting at 1900x1200 and see what happends. 🙂

Nvidia's dual gpu cards have never been as fast as two of their single gpu flagships in sli. That and quad sli does not scale well at all. 580s sell for $500, they're not going to put out a $1000 card. Likewise they won't put out a $700 card that is as fast as a $1000 one.

This card will be 570sli performance on a stick. If it is actually going to be released. There is as much confirmation of this card being real as there is of it having two 570 cores. 😉

I think this makes the most sense, it's what I would put my money on if I had to guess.

hmm.. good points.... so would you recommend going tri-sli 580 or dual 590? I have only 7 PCI-e slots.. and I need two; one for sound card and one for raid controller.. FARK

Great... that's all I needed. Now I need to hold on my purchase of two GTX 560 Ti's for SLi, I'll have to wait until the reviews of that card are out so I can compare more properly between both solutions. Well, when thinking about it I guess it ain't that bad, mid-March they say? It's good enough then, since the full volume recovery for most P67 Motherboards will occur in April (that's when I'll upgrade my current rig, including a new GPU upgrade), so I guess that by then we'll know lots about that card, I just think that the announcement itself is perhaps too early, or they want to create hype (in my case it just created a dilemma rather than hype).

Wait and see... indeed, wait and see.

I would wait it out.

If you are set on having a big, badass and potent setup, I'd wager 580 tri-sli is it until late this year.

Even if they did put two 580s on one card, logic would dictate you could not clock them to the performance you could push two independent 580s with their own card.

I'm not sure there are any quad 580SLI benches around, there are some quad 480 benches though. Those would give you a perfect idea of how poorly that fourth card scales.

Jesus christ guys. Don't you have anything better to do on a saturday night then argue about what video card is going to be faster? 🙂
