From what I remember of reporting at that time, McConnell was recommending that Trump find a new, less polarizing pick--even before the Christine Blasey Ford allegation became public. But ultimately, he was going to hold a hearing regardless of whom the nominee was.
I don't believe Mitch said any such thing, that Kavanaugh's nomination should be withdrawn. Once it was made Mitch just rammed it home, right to the shorthairs. Kavanaugh has been groomed by the GOP for a very long while. I'm confident he'll provide satisfying votes well into the future.
The conservative minority's ruling in the census question case was purely political, for example, as were the reasons for wanting to ask it. They didn't care that the admin had been lying to the federal judiciary all along, either. They'd have rewarded that dishonesty.
