The consumerist is such a crappy website. They post defamatory claims without even giving their target a chance to respond - because if they did, there wouldn't be much for them to write. Case in point: http://consumerist.com/consumer/compusa...xecs-could-cash-big-bonuses-240112.php. They have no idea what they're talking about. They just take whatever their readers send in and post it. They remind me of so many uneducated consumers who complain about things they don't understand.

The logical explanation is that they confused the OP with another customer. To lie to the OP and say they had performed services on the car when they knew they hadn't even touched it yet they would have to be so far beyond stupid. Obviously the OP would be wanting his car back after he paid - how could they have expected to get out of that one? And if they were lying, why not just lie and say they DID change his oil even though they didn't? OP wouldn't have known the difference.

Edit: That is based on the information the OP gave us. I wasn't there, so we may be missing some information. But the title of the thread is "Did Jiffy Lube try to rip me off?" not "Jiffy Lube tried to rip me off."

You really don't understand the underlying meaning behind all this. It's called consumer empowerment. The greater the exposure the greater the numbers of informed consumers.

Be it a mistake or not, take your pick. However, from the stories that I've read, others have experienced worst. If this story acts as a catalyst to force companies like Jiffy Lube to clean their act, then it has accomplished its purpose.

You can question it all you want. This is my story and my experience -- and that's the truth.

I didn't realize there were so many problems with Jiffy Lube. I've always taken my car there to get my oil changed. They never change anything without my authorization. They'll ask:

"How are your wipers?"

"It's recommended that XXXX gets replaced at XXXX miles...Would you like us to do this if it hasn't been done?"

and once I went into Jiffy Lube and they said "Sorry bud, we just ran out of 10W-30" ...so at least I know they are actually replacing the oil unlike some of the stories I've heard.

But with that said...you guys are mostly right. While the place I go to sounds decently reputable, I should start going to a dealership or something.

I understand what the Consumerist is all about, and I hold them to the same standards that I hold a journalist, because that's essentially what they're attempting to be. The problem is, most people will assume the worst about any company without thinking critically about what they're reading. The fact that it is presented from a biased viewpoint encourages the reader to share that viewpoint, because information that could potentially support the other side is left out (either consciously or unconsciously).

The Consumerist is no better than The Weekly World News.

Jiffy Lube is a franchise. They all have different owners. If they have always treated you right in the past, why change? Some car dealers are shady too, but you don't hold that against all of them apparently. ;)
