Without even reading your post I can make an educated guess that yes, JiffyLube did try to rip you off.

Funny story

My dad is retired air force and works at walmart as a service manager. Similar instance with different ending. Customer stated the car was blueish green, attendent went outside and saw one blue car and one green car. Keys worked on the green car. 1 hour later police showed up asking if anyone had seen a green car sitting in the exact same parking spot. Attendent informed police, yes we changed the oil and car was moved to front of the store since all spaces in the back were full. By no fault of the attendent, the keys worked for both cars. Everyone but he guy who didnt get his oil changed after 2 hours had a good laugh.

Eitherway both customers got a free oil change, and employees got a good laugh.

When I came back, they told me that my car was ready and even pointed out that my car had a transmission fluid leak and excessive oil leak. They even said that they replaced my filters and window wipers. I agreed to the charges and paid for it. After five minutes, the cashier comes back and tells me that my car hasn't been serviced, yet.

"No offense to you, but this really looks sketchy. You already told me that my car had a transmission leak and oil leak, yet your mechanics still haven't checked it. Please give me a refund. I'll take my business somewhere else," I said to the cashier.

While walking out, one of the mechanics told me that they had a hard time looking for my car because I had said it was blue and to them it looked more like green. I originally told them that the car looks bluish-green. They did not even had the face to apologize to me for the "bogus" charges that they were going to give me without inspecting my car. The sad fact is that I've been a customer their since 6 years ago. I took the same car without any problems.

walmart FTW!

and thats one honest cashier

Is it common for oil change places to identify cars by model and color when there is a unique identifier right on the back (and in some states the front) of the car?

Walmart hands down is the next best place, IMO, to get your cars oil changed at. Since getting hurt, and depending on how I feel when one of the cars need a oil change, if I cant do it I been taking it to walmart for the last 5+ years.

I get their cheap service, $12.95, nothing special oil change. They dont come back to you with bs up sells, and will honestly tell you if your car is leaking and from where. I have yet to take my car to one of them, I have been to several of them in different states, and all of them have been very good to me. I used to work for Jiffy Screw when I was a teen, Id never take my car to one of them rip off joints.

Only bad part for me with walmart is I usually make my way to the clearance or fish section and end up buying something while I wait for my car.

When I was the night service manager for west side dodge in North Aurora IL we got in one night 2 black trucks. One guy was local the other was from out of town. Both trucks we identical except for the plates and the keys worked in each one, they had identical door and ignition keys. We did the work to them not knowing we did the work on the work cars. When we were done they both came back bitching up a storm. At first I told them I was sorry for the work not being done, grabbed the mechanics and they swore to me they did the work, 2 different mechanics, so I went to the parking lot and thats when it hit me that the trucks were identical because the customers parked them next to each other.

Turned out neither of the mechanics bothered to look at the hanging numbered tags on the mirrors, just went to the lot looking for a black dodge pickup. Since the keys were identical it opened the wrong truck. I hoped in the one truck looking at the other and said to myself "WTF are the chances?" Got out, used the same keys, and the door popped open, then tried the ignition and it worked. 2 trucks, different states.

I grabbed the customers, and my mechanics, and showed them what had happened, we all stood there for about a min in complete silence, and then all had a really good laugh. Brought the trucks back it and corrected the problem. From then on it was a standing joke to make sure to check the tags hanging from the mirror no matter what was getting worked on.

i prefer valvoline it is a little more expensive but they can change my oil in less than 15 minutes while i sit in the car. A lot better than having to drag my car somewhere to have them take an hour or two to work on other vehicles.

Valvoline has been the only place that has been honest with me. I remember one time I took my car to NTB for an oil change and brakes. They claimed I need to chnage my air filter....

OK, the problem was I changed my air filter eariler in the week. i would have said FU and just walked out, but I needed my brakes changed badly. That said, I do not go there anymore.

I don't know if this has been said yet, but write your local paper, and hopefully they'll print it. There's no reason for a company to try and rip people off like that, and there's no telling how many they've already done that to (and how many more will fall for it).

Here in socal they did a big undercover investigation of Jiffylube with hidden cameras marking filters etc. Work just didn't get done and transmission flushes were charged but rarely done. Check NBC's website for LA

I've had mixed luck with Jiffy Lube.

When I got my car, I had a turning light out (the white one that aims to the right, so you can see to the side while turning) that I never fixed because it wasn't very important. They noticed it was out, offered to replace the bulb for $6.99, and I agreed. After they were done with my car, they told me that the bulb was in backwards, so they fixed it and didn't charge me anything.

Another time, they told me my rear diff fluid needed to be replaced... I didn't listen, assuming they were trying to BS me... but a few months later, my rear diff blew up! One of the gears shattered and punched a hole through my diff cover. That was a costly mistake

Other time's I've had them try to change my air filter when it was perfectly fine, that kind of stuff. I always stand right outside the bay door watching while they do the work.

How can you be sure they were trying to rip you off? It seems to me like there was some miscommunication and they thought you had a different car. As someone else pointed out, the fact that they then tried to correct their mistake seems to indicate that they were not being underhanded and realized and admitted to a mistake when they actually went to return your car.

See, they're not all bad. And the OP has been a customer for 6 years with no problems - that leads me to believe this was an honest mistake.

Jiffy Lubes are franchises. Assuming they're all shady is stupid, because they're all owned by different people.

I let the dealer change mine as my car is still under warranty, if any problems arise
I have all the receipts to prove it was done. Once it's out of warr. I will go back to
changing it myself.

My SIL took her Honda into Jiffy Lube recently for an oil change.

They told her the car needed a transmission fluid and filter change and a coolant flush and fill. She told them to go ahead and do it.

They had her wait in the car while they did it. When they were done, the car wouldn't start. The manager was screaming at her to get the car out of there because other customers were waiting. She's telling them the car won't start, and asking what did you break and he's telling her they didn't break anything and to get the car out of there now.

They made her call a towtruck and have the car towed out.

The Honda dealer says they have to replace the engine. At this point I don't know how it's all going to shake down. The Honda dealer hasn't finished yet.

Did the Honda dealer say what was wrong with the engine?
