But I guess that's what happens when you don't talk to a kid and just react on innuendo and suspicion.

You're mistaken about the "by the time she's 16" part - she's hated me since the day she moved here at age 3. Ever since her "mommy" ran off to Colorado with a fscking fugitive, she's been fighting EVERYBODY tooth and nail about EVERYTHING. We damn near signed her back over to her mother and put her on a bus, but my retard sister wouldn't sign the papers taking her back. As far as verifying the identity of people, that's easy for me to do, but the issue is that she didn't even ask, she just got the information and gave it away.

As for the getting knocked up stuff, I don't think there's ever been a question about that, she's ALWAYS refused to go to school if she isn't allowed to dress like a streetwalker. Her mother/my sister got her started on that when she was a little tiny baby - she thinks it's "pretty." To this day, her favorite movie is "Showgirls" (Don't ask, more of my sister's infinitely awesome parenting skills) and she still says she wants to be one when she grows up. HURRAH.

Oh, and personal freedom stops at the threshold of responsibility. If I don't return a library book and they won't let me take out a new one until I pay the fines, they're restricting my personal freedom, but just because I was irresponsible.

In a corporate setting where security is an issue to the business there is a reason for intense security. I pitty any business network that you admin, it wouldnt' suprise me if you got fired for being a control freak or having your coworkers do something incredibly mean to you for being an asshole. It's not uncommon for peoples password to be their login and for both to be on a sticky on their monitor, even in the business world.

In summary security is an issue, but you've made a mountain out of a molehill. You are a control freak and intensily anal and likely very paranoid. You should probably seek counseling for unresolved power issues.

Sounds like you have it in for her and anything tiny thing you can control, you'll do it just because you don't like her. You aren't helping. Only prolonging the problem. I can see why she hates you.

All you can really do is explain to her the dangers of the internet and make her aware of the predators. Educate her to be wary and not overly trusting. The internet is out there and she's going to have access not matter what you do (Im pretty sure Jr High kids have ample internet access in the labs and librarys now, or she could just go to a friends house). Education is a great tool towards prevention.

Eye, do you have some NSA servers in your house or what!! LOL...what's with the tight azz security measures for a home network? Precautions are wonderful but this seems extreme.

He likes to pretend that he is running a super-1337 network which contains all sorts of sensitive data. Search for posts of his and you can see first hand how full of himself he is.

Define sensitive. Sensitive to me? Yes. Sensitive to you? Probably not. Basically, I use this shithole to train myself on various OS's and access controls. Sometimes I get carried away, yes. Also, don't confuse my home network and the school network - that DOES contain sensitive data, but is not as technically sophisticated

And what was in the envelope? A letter, some pictures of a little girl and a cute puppy and some magnets (wtf?)

Haha... those are some pretty dumb rules. Do you actually refer to yourself as "the Administrator?"

Have you considered how hard it must be for her to live with someone other than her parents? She is probably reaching out on the internet because she is lonely. Address her loneliness and she won't need that outlet.

No serious limits were placed because my parents are used to raising kids with common sense. And there are no computers with no internet connection - all the remaining machines are Windows boxen on the domain with ICS access to one of the two dialup lines. Someone else is welcome to help her, assuming she is NOT in the "driver's seat." She broke the trust and has to deal with the consequences now.

I don't believe your parents did a very good job.

You are crazy person, and your sister is a fvcked up person!

doesn't sound to me like he wants anything to do with her. Sounds like he was waiting for her to do anything he deems wrong so that he can pull everything away from her. When you hate someone you are not going to educate or help him/her.

Maybe he's jealous because she came into his household and some of his parents' attention went to her, instead of just him.

Er... I understand she "broke" the rules... but what was so incrimnating in the envelope? By the contents, it
sounds like she made a friend and you yoink them away from her?
Good point, and I think he was a little harsh, but above all, I think she needs to truly understand the dangers of giving out your address to someone you meet online. If she has no clear concept of why the rules were in place, then she hasn't learned anything.

I would giver her access back, but in baby steps. She must understand her trust has to be regained. Also, teach her along the way as fas as why those rules were in place to begin with.

For starters, providing she got her privileges (key word here) back, I'd limit how much time she would be allowed to spend online. Spending a "hellacious" amount of time online isn't healthy.

:) Yeah I get that picture just from this thread. It's simultaneously sad and amusing.

Negative. My brother does, though. And what's so dumb about them?
Excessive time spent on voice line = bad
Passwords stored in text file = for morons
Games = IMMENSE waste of time since it takes about an hour to load a flash game @ 33.6
Forms = Potential for disaster, seeing that 99.9999% of forms on teh intarweb sign you up for a pr0n list or spam or some other such nonsense
One email = For ease of monitoring
No desktop saving = That just pisses me off, other people use that computer
Rap music = suck

which is a capital crime and a potential security issue You need to get outside and get some air... step away from the pc. Wth shes in the 5th grade and you say "which is a capital crime and a potential security issue" Just get her aol kiddy account or something that would atleast let her do homework (home-and-work) which sometimes need a computer. Are you going to drive her to the library everytime to just type something when she could print at home?

Also loosen up on her before she does some sh!t that could harm herself or other and no-one wants that to happen to anyone.

My god. :Q

I have suddenly realized how much freedom my parents gave me when I was younger. I need to thank them for letting me figure out some things in life on my own and not oppressing nearly me as much as they could have.

sounds like you just hate her and want something as an excuse to get her out of the house. if i had asshole cousins/uncles like you, i'd have never come to this country. jerk.

edit: if you're much of a paranoid freak, password protect your porn and put in a hidden folder in the windows folder. she wont find it. that's the only reason i can think of why you're so defensive about your home network. its not like your mom and dad work for the CIA and need to have the data secured. in which case, i'd hope they'd find a better admin than you.

Wow, sounds like you're a control freak that is just as anal as hell.

She's family for god sakes, talk to her and explain. You never give a second chance, even with family? And to a 5th grader? If she's betrayed your trust so much, you guys have raised her like sh1t.

I don't mind conservatives, hell I'm conservative on a lot of issues but it sounds like she lives in a prison camp. Eat at this time, go to the bathroom at this time, go play at this time with a guard with her in his sights at all times.
