did greece just elect Nazis into government??

They were elected using the same basic set of circumstances the Nazis did in WW2. High unemployment, no hope for a better future, and the knowledge that other nations control the destiny of your nation. They then used immigrants as their scapegoat (when unemployment is at 20%, it is easy to understand why non-natives taking jobs would cause anger).

Until things get better, their power will only grow.

Come to think of it - ""the time for fear has come" & "Michaloliakos said his party would fight against 'world usurers'" actually sounds more like current Weather Undergrounders.

Don't let the ridiculousness of their political views distract you from the fact that these people are dangerous. They have a high level of penetration among the ranks of both the police and the army and this gives them the ability to conduct their racist campaign on a large scale and with virtual impunity. About a year ago (before they had scored such high percentages in elections) they went on a pogrom against immigrants WIELDING CHAINSAWS, and that was at the heart of the capital which is teaming with police. Those guys also regularly perform death squad duties armed with knives, even raiding immigrants' homes.
 
Would Greek neo-Nazis even be seen as "white" by neo-Nazis from Germany and such?
 
Who's more dangerous to Greece right now, the elected Neo-Nazis who want to plant landmines along the Greece border or the elected Syriza party that wants to bail on the bail-out package that Greece negotiated with Germany and other creditors?

Exactly. They sure know how to round up all those undesirables and put them to work. Not to mention they have a great plan for not supporting them once they've outlived their usefulness.

Serious Time: How anyone with even a basic knowledge of history could support this kind of group is beyond my comprehension. Is there anyone who can explain how people can fall back into this trap after what it's put Europe through before?

Wow, that is seriously messed up. And it doesn't sound like they intend to behave responsibly now that they are in government. Hope you guys can get things straightened out over there, sucks to see the home of democracy with neon-Nazis in even a little bit of power.

All internecine picking aside, thankfully the USA has very few truly violent nutters, and they get very little political traction. We pretty much worked that stuff out in the sixties.

EDIT: Of course, we're also heavily armed, and a chainsaw-wielding home invader is likely to learn first hand that shotgun beats rock, paper, scissors, paper, lizard, Spock AND chainsaw.

Wrong, this is what you get with a govt that was out of control. They could either choose austerity and a bailout or a complete collapse, the ultimate austerity. The point being austerity was the result of another cause, out of control spending.
 
You obviously don't keep up with European politics. Nazi parties are popular and common throughout the continent. A Nazi candidate in the first round of the French Presidential elections won 18% of the vote.

Europeans have always been supporters of far-right terrorist political groups. This is nothing new.

Do you honestly believe that the political establishment, that was responsible for Greece's debt in the first place, was a reliable executor of the tidying-up of the state, which is what austerity ostensibly represents? The government could have chosen to tell the truth from the begining and defaulted as soon as they "discovered" the deficit. The big guys in Europe would not have allowed a complete collapse (that's rubbish and I wish people would stop thinking of the euro as a joke like that). The austerity is a big charade performed for the benefit of the oligarchies of Europe. If they really wanted fix things in Greece they would have FIRST severed all ties with the clientelist political system of Greece and then fostered the progressive powers (that were flourishing at the moment), and assigning them the task of making the structural reforms that were necessary to turn the boat around. INSTEAD they colluded with the same bastards that kept the country in perpetual stagnation and dependence of their own export-geared economies. They LIED OFF THEIR TITS about things like a fat public sector (which was among the lowest in Europe), long vacations and early pensions (both of which were comparable with most northern countries') and laziness (when working hours were among the most in the whole world). At the same time this allowed the REAL MALIGNANCIES of Greece to go unnoticed and so those who benefit from their continuation are still unscathed.
 
Nazi is very specific. Far-right is probably a better label.

If the US had proportional representation, you could bet we'd have far right legislators too.

It is noteworthy though. You're not going to see westerners give up their quality of life for no good reason without first going to the far right or far left.
 
Sigh. When will people ever stop blaming immigrants for every economic problem they have? Of course we the people can never do wrong; it must always be the alien usurper who causes every problem. The only thing we the people can ever do wrong is in being overly tolerant of the alien usurper. What nation on earth is immune from varying degree of this way of thinking? Certainly not the US.
