Diablo 2 is 16 years old

I installed the latest 1.14 patch and started a new game with a Sword Mastery + Double-Swing + Warcry Barbarian.

It runs fine on Win7-64.

Great game. There are widescreen patches available too:-

Edit: It's actually not bad looking vs RPG's of similar age (Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape Torment, etc).

I just recently purchased Diablo 3 at a cheap price due to many fond memories with D1 and D2. I still have my D2 discs, might have to load it up and check out some of the new patches.

I never played II but I did finish D1 back in the day. It's one of the few ARPGs I've finished along with Titan Quest and Torchlight 1.

Diablo 1 will be 20 years old in December.

Yeah, I have a lot of fond memories of D2 as well. I need to load that back up one of these days, and maybe finally pickup D3.

So it supports 1920x1080 resolution now?

wug?

Love this game. I joined around patch 1.08. I still meander the trophy room on the jsp forums once in a blue moon.

Diablo & Diablo 2 were great fun .. these, along with Carmageddon, Carmageddon 2, and Total Annihilation were the focus of most of our lan parties in late 90s early to mid 00s.

Those games are now long dead. Now AAA titles are 50GB at least, broken Day 1, DLC dribbled out over months that should have been part of the game in the first place, require sign up to at least one junk store and if single player is included it will last about as long as your lunch break. Welcome to modern gaming!

Hmm. Saw this thread. Went to garage, found D2 box (Collector's Edition), carried back into office/gaming room. Got on Battlenet, entered keys...hey, added to my collection! Woohoo! Downloading now. Will try that widescreen mod next. Seems like I tried D2 a few years ago, couldn't deal with the 800x600 resolution.

Now running on W10 will update with how this works. 🙂

Update 1: Okay, so the original 16-digit code from the disc case doesn't work with the downloaded installer. Had to go back to Battlenet and find the new key it assigned when I added the game to my account. Probably should have just installed from discs I guess. But then patching might be a pain. Got it installed (very, very fast with hex-core + SSD). Now downloading LoD expansion. Then we'll see about widescreen.

Update 2: Alright, I'm stumped. Game installed as version 1.14b and none of the widescreen mods seem to work. Could not get the glide wrapper to work either. Any tips?

Best game of alllll time. 😀

If you liked D2, Path of Exile is its spiritual successor. Diablo 3 is off in another direction.

Because they figure those 150k active players will jump back into the steaming pile of feces that is current WoW and bolster their numbers. Yeah. People playing vanilla for a reason...

It's really too bad they don't have different Blizzard-run servers for each of the different eras/expansions. I'd resub in a second if could play vanilla and/or TBC in original form.

There's a patch (D2MultiRes) that supports various resolutions for both 1.12 and 1.13. Only downside is it's considered a "cheat" for multi-player. Works fine for SP though.
That program is a bit rough around the edges. For one, on my 1440p monitor, I had so many resolutions that selecting 1440p via the GUI wasn't possible because I couldn't scroll low enough, and secondly, it crashes pretty often.

It's fun for a screenshot, but 800x600 is still the best choice for actually playing the game, sadly.

Add -3dfx to the shortcut for the Glide wrapper to work. But honestly, just use Direct3D unless you have a good reason not to.

As for the widescreen mod(s), they're hit & miss so I don't bother with them. I tend to play large parts of the game without "quit & save", so 100% stability is a must.

I honestly cannot remember if I played Diablo 2, I might have gotten my head sunk into a beta test on another at the time.

I was in a hunt for the perfect MMO at one time, like a lot of people in the past.

M00, he he.

Diablo II was, virtually, a perfect game.

Among the greatest games of all time, on any platform.

SWG was pretty epic, before SOE screwed that one up with CURB.

Was sick how many fled that game in one day. All the people probably that had managed to get Jedi at that point left I imagine.

Most people knew it would suck after that.

One of the stupidest things I ever saw an online game ever do.

A HD remaster of Diablo 2 done well is out of the question. It would emasculate Diablo 3 in comparison to their current customers.

- One of my favorite two game soundtracks of all time, with Total Annihilation.

- An incredibly annoying feature about expiring characters stored online after 90 days. I made may characters online 'in case' I wanted to try multi-player, which was horrible with people simply running around grabbing loot, but for many years I've had to remember to refresh my characters every 90 days to not lose them, no recovery option, which I did lose half of them from.

- Very hard to play now with the 800x600, looked great on my old 21" CRT now horrible.

- The best game website I've ever seen, diabloii.net, though that content is gone.

- Anyone remember when Diablo came out the huge controversy, 'Is it an RPG?'
