wouldn't the leet-est desktop be, technically, a command line? Maybe a terminal window in X?

I used to do all the weirded out modding of my desktop when I was small, but I found it served no purpose, wallpapers were always covered by windows, simple color schemes vastly improved readability. System performance was good too. Any app I had perpetually running on my desktop was usually a waste since I know where my most commonly used apps are by heart and I don't mind windows quick launch in the toolbar. I miss the command line days tho, when knowing DOS made you special 😀

IMO, XP is a waste of money. It doesn't offer anything that helps me get work done and it actually makes my job harder because anytime someone complains their machine is too slow, they call me and I have to find a way to make it work right. I would have preferred MS to have done something more productive with their time.

if i were working i would also rather somthing like win 2k pro of NT 4.0 but since im just gaming and graphic design is my prefered field at the moment having somthig where i can play around with the visual side of it is a plus.

Personally, I find the OSX taskbar to be annoying. Too bubbly if you ask me. Whenever I am at CompUSA or Fry's I turn off the icon resizing on the Mac that I'm playing around with.

Here's mine: DESKTOP.

/edit: It's not too l337, not too flashy - it's clean, and it's organized, and it's informative. The way I like it.

My Desktop - 1600x1200, 471K (not work, family, or child safe)

You could always use Litestep with Win2K, or any Windows OS for that matter. When I started using Litestep with Win95 I already had a desktop shell more functional and more customizable than what you see with the theme support in XP today. There are literally hundreds of modules that can be used and customized, and there are scripting modules that can give you nearly unlimited functionality. Depending on how many modules you use, it can have a smaller memory footprint than explorer and is often times faster.

</end Litestep rave>

The drawbacks though are a relatively steep learning curve, a generally closed-in community, and the LS community has been without a central site for some time now (although it seems to have made its return very recently - www.litestep.net).

If Litestep isn't your cup of tea, there are still other alternative shells out there. Blackbox (for win32), Geoshell, Hoverdesk, Talisman, etc. You don't have to use Explorer! 🙂
