I have a managed dumping ground. Right now I have 28 icons; one of them is a folder containing 13 other files and another folder containing 10 other apps. Until a couple of weeks ago I probably had close to 40 icons on the desktop.

I personally don't understand the purpose of having it entirely clean - it's there to be used. If I am at my computer I am either surfing the net, working on some document, or a combination thereof. I am not just starring at my wallpaper and as such I really don't care too terribly much about the wallpaper since it is going to be covered by the applications I am using (e.g. Opera and Office).

The desktop itself is "clean" from files, but I keep a lot of stuff on it - RK Launcher (dock), Rainmeter with various things like readers weather and a transparent bar, and plan on getting some more stuff and organize it a bit more, clean up the overall look. And I use gadgets from time to time, currently really only have a market watcher in use.

Trying to find something to dress Pidgin up some more and pin it to the desktop

Um no. The only things that are taking up RAM that are on your desktop are the wallpaper and any open apps. Now open apps include any apps that are running in the background in your "notification area" as well as any "gadgets or widgets" you have running. But plain ordinary files? No they aren't taking up any more RAM on your desktop than in any other folder (unless you are counting the icon).
