So let's settle this. Do you use your desktop as an all purpose dumping ground for apps, icons, new files and whatever you are working on at the moment? Or do you keep it as barren as a dessert mesa?

Obviously most people are in between but you get the idea.

In between. I don't stare at my desktop wallpaper all day and it's not there for others to stare at so I don't really care what's there or how many icons there are. But I don't like too much crap there either.

Computer desktop: Not immaculate, but not densely populated. 35 icons, much less than I've had in the past.

Real desktop: All-purpose dumping ground.

"Desktop" at work: A dirty all-purpose wasteland of semi-functioning industrial electronics. :D

I turn off icons and only use my start menu.

I don't like anything on my desktop, just a wallpaper of choice should be visible for my machines.

I tend to use it as a dumping ground, then once and a while I'll make a folder called "old stuff" or whatever is appropriate and start moving stuff I think I might still need, while deleting other stuff.

Actual data that I plan to keep indefinably gets filed in proper location.

Since the early days of Windows, I used my desktop icons to open my most frequently used programs.
Windows XP moved that to the Start menu and QuickLaunch toolbar.
Windows Vista added to that hitting the Windows key and typing the first few letters of whatever I needed.
Windows 7 added to that the permanent QuickLaunch window positions.

summary: I like how we've gotten more and faster options, with nothing ever taken away (except for the limited taskbar window icon right-click context menu).

There is no use in having a desktop if you are not going to put stuff on it.

I use mine as a temporary working area. I'll drop files and folders there, but I clean it up after awhile. I have ObjectDock at the top of my screen, and RocketDock on the left side. Both are for launching apps, and both are kept hidden.

I use mine as a temporary storage place.

Right now I have some music I just downloaded and my resume.
