Wouldn't really long hair be kind of dangerous if you were a machinist?
You can't set foot in an oil refinery if you have facial hair.

My brother was doing the whole "movember" thing when he had to visually inspect something at the refinery. They wouldn't let him past the regular visitor/secretary area until he shaved. They even had shaving tools, because apparently that happens quite a bit.

You're missing the fact that you were judging off a picture. I was judging off your actions/comments. That's the whole point you're missing.

Again, you admit you're just trolling?

Employers hire by making a judgment on:

  1. relevant education/work experience
  2. how you carry yourself during the interview
  3. what you look like and expect you to look like when they hire you
I think YOU are the one missing the point.
Looking like an unkempt hippie won't get you hired even in the fast-food industry. So yes, judgment based on looks is VALID AND SOCIALLY ACCEPTED.

Compassion is not mutually exclusive to the target's motivation to do EVERYTHING possible to make themselves more appealing to employers.

Nothing to do with appearance. They want you to be clean shaven so if they have to put a breathing apparatus on you it will fully seal around your mouth.

$500/month is a very fair price for housing in San Diego? Really? I guess the crash was a lot worse than I thought.

He's asking for a GARAGE to live in, not an 1,800 square foot condo in La Jolla. If anything $500's too much for a GARAGE. You can rent a pretty decent room with internet and full house privileges in many parts of SD for about that price. He doesn't want to rent a house, he wants a single room or even a shack as he said it.

Look what you guys have turned into. Old farts complaining about someone needing to cut their hair and shave. I 100% agree with lxskllr that him not looking like an office droid has just turned your world upside down. How pathetic it must have been doing everything your parents told you to do growing up.

so uh, i don't work in an office, and i need a haircut. so how does that cause me to think everyone needs to look like an office droid (drone?). of course, i'm also not begging for a place to live for my family, so win for me.

You seem to be in some sort of delusional competition with this family.

That husband might be able to get a job if he got new pants, cut his hair, threw away that hat, took a shower (probably), shaved, and wiped that shit-faced grin off his face.

this....one look at him and you can assume the rest

I'd like to know the details here....is he educated, what does she do, what were their finances like before asking for help, why did they have 3 children (or any for that matter) if they weren't prepared.

I have no problem helping someone; but it's another thing to give someone a handout or to help someone without common sense.

In detroit, you can rent a home for ~$400/mo.
They always get ya with the add-ons. Rent is $400 but the security system to keep criminals out is $600. Bastards!

Where I live, $500 will get you a slum. I don't mean like a crime area or anything that extreme, but like a place that just sucks. Smells bad, electrical sucks, not well insulated so it's cold all the time, etc.

I should reserve the right to kill myself when something something happens. Actually I'm not really sure what's so bad about oil refineries. I would think fire would be a major problem, and I mean the type of fire where it's not the air that kills you. The kind of fire where you melt like a Popsicle in someone's butt.

and thats all he's going to get looking like he does. doesnt sound like he cares where his family has to sh*t either, which means probably your back yard if you offer him a shed.
foreclosed home and still has an internet connection...pfff, yeah, sounds like he has his priorities in order

Bullshit. I've known people that look scruffier than he does, and probably make more money than you do in the computer field, and high end trades(machinist...). He was paying the mortgage on a house in CA, so he was making some real money....

I think a lot of people here are missing the point. In my opinion if he cleaned up his appearance, his new look may open up more opportunities for employment. This is a not a judgment of whether he is a loser or a dumbass for having dreads... My brother chooses to live a hippyish lifestyle and he graduated from a nice university in Virginia.

The issue here is he is about to be on the street. He has a family to support. If it were me, I would do whatever it takes to get a decent paycheck whether a liked the work or not. I have not worn a business suit other than to interviews. never at work. I am wearing jeans and a t-shirt now. If my employer said there is a new dress code and we all need to be in suits, I would come to work in a suit. I would do that because I have a family and do not want to be begging for space in someone's garage.

Sure there are plenty of companies that do not care about appearance but rahter focus on how a person performs. But I would bet those places are outnumbered by companies where employees have a more conservative look.

Just sayin'
