Employers hire by making a judgment on:

1. relevant education/work experience
2. how you carry yourself during the interview
3. what you look like and expect you to look like when they hire you

I think YOU are the one missing the point.
Looking like an unkempt hippie won't get you hired even in the fast-food industry. So yes, judgment based on looks is VALID AND SOCIALLY ACCEPTED.

Compassion is not mutually exclusive to the target's motivation to do EVERYTHING possible to make themselves more appealing to employers.

He's asking for a GARAGE to live in, not an 1,800 square foot condo in La Jolla. If anything $500's too much for a GARAGE. You can rent a pretty decent room with internet and full house privileges in many parts of SD for about that price. He doesn't want to rent a house, he wants a single room or even a shack as he said it.

I'd like to know the details here....is he educated, what does she do, what were their finances like before asking for help, why did they have 3 children (or any for that matter) if they weren't prepared.

I have no problem helping someone; but it's another thing to give someone a handout or to help someone without common sense.

Where I live, $500 will get you a slum. I don't mean like a crime area or anything that extreme, but like a place that just sucks. Smells bad, electrical sucks, not well insulated so it's cold all the time, etc.

I should reserve the right to kill myself when something something happens. Actually I'm not really sure what's so bad about oil refineries. I would think fire would be a major problem, and I mean the type of fire where it's not the air that kills you. The kind of fire where you melt like a Popsicle in someone's butt.

and thats all he's going to get looking like he does. doesnt sound like he cares where his family has to sh*t either, which means probably your back yard if you offer him a shed.

Bullshit. I've known people that look scruffier than he does, and probably make more money than you do in the computer field, and high end trades(machinist...). He was paying the mortgage on a house in CA, so he was making some real money....

I think a lot of people here are missing the point. In my opinion if he cleaned up his appearance, his new look may open up more opportunities for employment. This is a not a judgment of whether he is a loser or a dumbass for having dreads... My brother chooses to live a hippyish lifestyle and he graduated from a nice university in Virginia.

The issue here is he is about to be on the street. He has a family to support. If it were me, I would do whatever it takes to get a decent paycheck whether a liked the work or not. I have not worn a business suit other than to interviews. never at work. I am wearing jeans and a t-shirt now. If my employer said there is a new dress code and we all need to be in suits, I would come to work in a suit. I would do that because I have a family and do not want to be begging for space in someone's garage.

Sure there are plenty of companies that do not care about appearance but rahter focus on how a person performs. But I would bet those places are outnumbered by companies where employees have a more conservative look.
