I'm confused as to why this man's haircut makes him some evil asshole. He could be the nicest guy on the planet, but this condescending forum doesn't care about any of that.

You're hanging out on a forum full of 21 year old, self made millionaires who date super models, are you surprised by by their attitudes?

I'm cautious towards any new people no matter how they look. I've learned in life that people that are well dressed and smooth talking tend to threaten legal action at the drop of a hat, blatantly rip you off with a smirk and are more manipulative compared to the average blue collared person.
Everyone is a dick and you can guess what kind based on how they look.

dreads = dirty hippy; friendly but disagreeable and weird

greasy neckbeard = slob; will never do dishes but will be the cause of 90% of them. his bed room will be filled with empty coke cans.

bleached hair = retarded female; her "boyfriends" will probably break something of value

guido = retarded male; he will break things and possibly punch holes in the walls

guy in a suit = cocaine dealer in disguise

Wow. Some super judgmental pricks in here.

Personally, if it's a single guy/girl then do whatever you want. If you want dreads and no job, living of gov't assistance or CL freebies in order to maintain your culture lifestyle then great.

But when you have a wife and three kids it's time to cut the hair, dress appropriately and support your family.

Bullshit. I've known people that look scruffier than he does, and probably make more money than you do in the computer field, and high end trades(machinist...). He was paying the mortgage on a house in CA, so he was making some real money....

That husband might be able to get a job if he got new pants, cut his hair, threw away that hat, took a shower (probably), shaved, and wiped that shit-faced grin off his face.

So then I took off my hat...I said imagine that, me working for you?

Then more power to them! I'm not saying anyone who has a family has to look blue collar, but I am saying that this dude in particular needs to get his crap together and find some work.

If you can make money with your dreads and no showers or whatever then fine, but when it starts affecting your family's life then you need to make some changes

There is your difference.

Funky hair and working hard to pay mortgage and support family = Eccentric
Funky hair and begging for housing on Craigslist = Dirty Hippie

What if they were? Is cutting your hair gonna improve your chances of scoring a job as a machinist? For those of you in cubicle land, the answer is no. For high end computer work, having chops is more valuable than appearance, so again, cutting your hair gets you nothing.

Ummm he's not begging, begging would be "somebody please GIVE me and my family a place to stay for free!" He's offering to pay $500 a month. He's looking for housing, which he's willing to pay a very fair price for. CL would be a great place as many people who are looking to rent out rooms go on there. So his post makes a lot of sense. Haircut or not he's willing to pay for house, if I ahd a room to rent I would give 2 shits if he looked like a hippu, or looked like Steve Jobs. Pay me the rent every month and shit will be fine.

begging not found.

Wouldn't really long hair be kind of dangerous if you were a machinist?

Yea, if it's unrestrained. All the machinists I've known keep it tied back at work, and usually have a greasy hat on too :^D

He looks like a cool dude that probably just needs a little help. But being on craigslist you never know. If I was a bachelor I might help a brother out but no way I'm putting my family in danger by letting complete strangers stay at the house.

$500/month is a very fair price for housing in San Diego? Really? I guess the crash was a lot worse than I thought.

This. I also know people who look that in R&D. It's the same concept as wearing a suit to an interview, there are some things that are just universally more professional.

You're completely incorrect. Maintaining a clean-cut outward appearance is beneficial everywhere. I'm not sure what you are calling "high end computer work" but I work for an Engineering Company based in Austin, TX and although we hire plenty of weird people, you're fighting an uphill battle looking like that.

Look what you guys have turned into. Old farts complaining about someone needing to cut their hair and shave. I 100% agree with lxskllr that him not looking like an office droid has just turned your world upside down. How pathetic it must have been doing everything your parents told you to do growing up.

Is $500 really that little in SD? Here in the midwest you can get a really nice apartment for $500/month.

if you can't take care of your appearance, you obviously can't take care of an apt much less find a good job. its called the loser cycle. To me he looks like a druggy, even homeless people can find ways to trim hair, he must not be very resourceful either..another con against him.
first impressions are everything and much of peoples initial trust comes from first impressions.

Sure, because that's what everyone said. Way to build up those strawmen, dummy.

I'm fine with someone sticking to their ideals regarding personal appearance, personal ethics, or whatever - I admire it, even. But you should also be willing to face the consequences of those decisions. I had an unemployed relative who had a whole list of requirements for any job he was willing to accept. He couldn't work for some big giant corporation that only cared about making money, and not about its employees - he had to "believe" in the mission of his employer. He couldn't work regular hours - he had to be able to set his own, because if he didn't feel like going into work one day, he shouldn't be "forced" to do so. And on and on and on. Mind you, this was coming from a high school graduate with no specialized skills. I admired that he stuck to his ideals with that whole "I won't hold a job I don't believe in" bit, but I wasn't surprised he was still living at home well into his 30's, either.
