I just got this game and it's kicking my ass hah. As expected I guess. I even chose the cheapest class: royal. Well, mostly it's me rushing in trying to make sure that Ostava? isn't dead. I didn't realize that after you save him, you should try to beat it directly. Otherwise he dies :(. I had around 5k souls when I died, boo. Got that on my first run through boletarian palace.

Got to the part where you can knock down a bunch of boulders to clear enemies away, and a boulder barely got me and wham 5 others as I lay on the ground. Kinda cheap that one. The enemies are pretty fair, although quite difficult.

So how do you decide what you want to upgrade? And when to go back? I wasn't sure if 5k souls was that much or whether I should keep going.

Also, what should I upgrade or buy? I'm not really sure if I should buy anything from the first merchant I meet in 1-1.

***possible minor spoilers***

Did Ostrava already die in your game? When he dies he drops the Mausoleum Key which can be used to open the locked door behind the Red Eye Knight in 1-1. But if you miss it when he dies then you don't get another shot at the key unless you start a new game or wait until New Game+. Unfortunately this happened to me.

I saved him in 1-1, but didn't realize he reappeared in 1-2. Once I started 1-2 he left the Nexus and I never saw him again. Later I read on the Wiki that he appears in 1-2 and then 1-3 if you save him each time. So I guess he died in 1-2 without me ever seeing him. IMO, you should either just follow him and wait for him to die or just outright kill him in 1-1 if you want that key.

Don't worry too much about 5K souls. It seems like a lot in the first level, but there are later levels where you can earn that much off just one or two kills.

Hard to say what stats to buy as that depends on what sort of build you want to do. I will advise against spending any on luck though. From what I've read the effects are minimal at best and debatable at worst.

I wouldn't buy anything from the dregling in 1-1 unless you need a firebomb or two for the 1-1 boss. Also, don't bother upgrading any weapons with Boldwin in the Nexus. It's best to use Blacksmith Ed in 2-1 since he offers all the options for upgrading with different ores and souls. Boldwin won't offer most of the options.

I played Demon's Souls for maybe three or four hours this weekend and, aside from a few extra shields, wound up with absolutely nothing to show for it. What's worse, my weapon broke and I didn't have the souls to repair it, so I played exactly enough to get the souls to repair it and then ran like a little girl back to the Archstone to repair. Then it happened again. I wanted to cry, but I settled for hurling my Dualshock through a nearby window.

Is there any way to progress in the game if you die often? I wouldn't mind getting beat down and replaying the level so much if there was some sort of hope that after the 100th try, maybe I'd finally level a stat that would make the 101st try marginally less painful.

Then again, I hear that the class that I randomly chose (Wanderer) is apparently one of the most painful to play.

Ultimately class doesn't really matter since you can buy any stat you want, but there are definitely differences starting out. Royal is the easiest to get started with since it starts with a magic ring and a good ranged magic attack. Wanderer is definitely tough starting out because they have no ranged attack, crappy equipment, and (IMO) have wasted soul levels in the Luck category.

If you want to keep pressing on you may want to see if you can acquire a bow of some sort (if you haven't already). Using ranged attacks definitely makes the game easier.

given that it's so early on, and that I've died a bunch, I might just restart the game. I only have to rework the tutorial and after that it's no big deal.

The biggest problem is time, it just takes ages to clear a level. I spent a good 2-3 hours working very methodically through it, and then I accidentally hit the shack wrong and wham :(. haha well I'll give it another shot tomorrow or something.

Fortunately, many of the levels, including 1-1, have shortcuts that you can open up while playing. In 1-1 you can open those side stairways next to that huge gate you see right when you start.

LOL, that's about what my last play session was like. I love the game, but man it can be aggravating.

I'm on New Game+ only have a couple easy bosses left. Maneaters and flamelurker were so much more ridiculous but they are beat. Sometimes it's hard being mostly melee.

I'm around soul level 130.

Think I need to beat it 2 more times for platinum. Maybe just once.

Game of the forever.

but to answer your question. don't worry about your souls until after 1-1. Just beat that level then start worrying about stuff. You can't even gain levels I don't think until you beat it.

You know the platinum trophy requires all the other trophies right? not just beating the game x number of times.

This game is both extremely frustrating and addictive, one night you'll be so pissed you'll throw your controller through the window, but the next morning you'll be extremely eager to start playing again.

When you finally beat a stage you can't help but feel like a little kid who just beat up the school bully.

Becoming the 3-3 boss and beating multiple players is extremely rewarding, I recommend everyone try it.

It took me forever to get platinum, although moving soul arrow help a ton againist bosses.
NG+ 5-2 and 3-2 are nightmare without dark silver shield.. hell, it is hell even with it.

YES! finally beat 1-1. Phalanx was easy, kinda wish I could fight him again. Used all my firebombs and a couple turpentine. Only took 2 minutes or so.

Man, I didn't realize how close I've come before. I actually did it this time with a new knight in only 2 hours. I could probably run through it again much more quickly as well.

Anyway I'm assuming it autosaves because I can't manual save inside the nexus, so if anyone has any suggestions for a knight build that would be great.

I don't mind using magic, but really, I don't have any spells yet either it seems.

I chose knight because it honestly looked the most badass clad in all that armor :D.

edit: I also had kind of a bug with Ostrava. I killed all the grendlings near him and there was absolutely noone left, but I just could not get him to jump down from the ledge. I jumped onto the ledge and spoke to him, where he thanked me for saving him, but he was still waving and not walking around. Hope he reappears later.

Have fun grinding for pure bladestone.

(Unless you've already done that)

I agree, though. DS is by far my favorite game this gen. It blows any other game I've played out of the water.

It took me 3 days... when I backstab people with my sharp secret dagger +5 it's worth it though.

Okay, I finally figured out what I was doing wrong in 1-1. After I got to the top of the stairs past the first big ball trap, I had gone through the fog past the knight in the full suit of armor instead of taking the stairs down to the lever for the gate and, more importantly, the Cling Ring. It's a trivial amount of progress considering that I've probably already put about 10 hours into this game (although I've abandoned a couple of characters), but I'll take it.

Best game I have for the PS3. I'm currently on NG++++ with my lvl 130 thief - I made her a dexterity build. If I were you I would get my endurance up to 40, vitality up to at least 30 and whatever else up to at least 60, for me its dexterity. What you don't want in this game is a well rounded character. You need to choose weapons based on your stats, because most weapons stack with them making them much more powerful.

After beating the game so many times, I really just pvp. I usually either wait to get invaded in 1-4 or 4-1 as a human or if I'm a soul/get killed as a human I'll invade 1-4/4-1 to get my life back. Right now I'm using a hiltless +5 with light weapon/adjuncticator shield +5 to get my life back from the hiltless w/ second chance/warding. Foes ring/cling if I'm a soul or regenerators/thiefs ring if im a human.

Don't use ephemeral eyes to get back to human form - invade. Ephemeral eyes are only to be used to get black world tendency - You should get at least 30 each play-through. You need to pace yourself in this game, you can't just go running in and killing everyone - that's how you get killed.

You'll need this

If anyone here is ~lvl 130 I need some mercurystone chunks if you have any ;)

I actually just purchased this game. I've been told it is harder than Ninja Gaiden, and going in with that expectation I am going to be pretty happy if this is true.
