Primaries are the one thing I will guaranteed vote in. A candidate espousing the policy that Bernie and Tim Walz are arguing for gets my vote, anyone who wants to follow the Hakeem Jeffries wing I will fucking abandon in the general.

There definitely is one downside to an extended shutdown that isn't widely discussed: providing the administration with genuine legal reasons for issuing RIFs. But the Senate shouldn't let the House just jam them with a big piece of shit CR.

So far they have not really cared that much about legal reasons for what they are doing anyhow. We have been told that the goal here is to get rid of federal employees now and then delay the courts for a few years with the expectation that most will have moved on by then.

They are shuttering whole agencies, laying off thousands, and already plan to RIF hundreds of thousands more. The layoffs and shutdown are already happening. Democrats in the Senate should not legitimize it by funding this lawless government.

For sure. It's really a lose lose. But I think the right approach is to exert congressional authority over the budget (eg, shutdown with no money until it is being spent per the law).

Yes, Congress exercising its constitutional powers over the money is the only real option here that isn't a full capitulation. All the options suck, it just happens to suck the least long term because rubber stamping whatever Trump wants to do will just lead to even worse outcomes.

For sure.

I think the upside of a shutdown is continued souring of public opinion on the Trump administration, which gives Democrats more leverage.

The downside is the providing legal reasons to permanently fire people en mass. Yes, the admin will try to drag out current court cases, but they are losing quickly at the moment. Either way, chaos will reign.

I think they should go forward with no CR, unless it is the clean one that buys a month.
 
It definitely is lose/lose for the Dems. All they can do is shut down the government, and that hasn't gone well, even for the Reps when they have done or attempted it. I think it would go even worse for the Dems, considering the strength of the right wing media and social media.

All the options are bad but legitimizing illegal actions and totally abandoning their sole major constitutional power is the worst possible option. Doing so in a way that makes almost all your primary voters think you hoodwinked them (voting for cloture but against the bill) is politically disastrous. Worse than any amount of heat from a shutdown.

No it's not just lose/lose

The Dems can make it a win if they fucking have a clear and concise message sent down from leadership and messaged with discipline across the board.

But Dem leadership is incompetent. As we have seen from many reports, of which many are in this thread.

I know the right wing media is screaming the narrative that this would be a Democratic Party caused shutdown but that is plain old bullshit. The Republicans are the majority party in the House and Senate and any shutdown is 100% on them. Once again, internal Republican Party politics are causing a shutdown. Thune can dispense with the filibuster whenever it is convenient so he only needs his party to pass the CR. If he was interested in gaining Democratic votes, he wouldn’t be pushing the bill he’s pushing.

I am not familiar enough with the Senate protocol to know whether or not the Reps can effectively bypass the Filibuster. Either way though, I dont know if it really matters whether or not blaming a shutdown on the Dems is "bullshit". Trump got elected by making the electorate believe exactly that (BS), and I think the Dems will be blamed.
 
The Dems are easy patsies because the leadership is inept and ineffective at creating cohesive messaging strategies. And the little messaging they do is mostly pathetic and useless.

They need to be strong and take on the media narrative. The media sucks mostly but they can change the narrative if they knew what they were doing and actually tried.

Only if you choose to blame them, without reason. The filibuster exists at the pleasure of the Majority Leader and can be disregarded. As feskimospy is fond of saying, just because the Republicans pretend their lies are truth, we don’t have to pretend to believe them.

Van Hollen is an explicit no on both.
