This place is a kiddie pool compared A LOT of sites. If you think people here are mean, cruel, and just generally wretched souls of the human race go check out some of the comment boards on the celebrity sleaze sites.

Hell even the forums dedicated to a freaking Toyota Minivan are more spiteful than here. God help you if you own a Honda Minivan and post there.

As bad as you think this forum may be, it's easily several cuts above many others.

yea but thats not saying much though. NN is comparing to what these forums used to be

Eh, I guess you guys don't remember Nowhereman, H8Tank, IMTyping and others that generally at newbies for breakfast. Forums in general eat their young. After 10+ years of answering the same exact questions or seeing the same chain email posted over and over and over and over and over and over and over again people start to get a little bitter and crusty.

You do have access to stats...

Google Trends for forums.anandtech.com

So the whole of anandtech (all subforums) has gone from 60k in July 2007 to under 30k at present :(

Looks like that references the main site. I honestly don't know if I've been to the main page more than once or twice (and that was by accident) in the last 5 years.

You appear to be correct, deleting the forums. doesn't seem to change the stats :(

Also, check out the trend for Hard forums/mainsite. Almost an exact clone of this one. I think that console gaming and dirt cheap PC's has dramatically taken a bite out of computer enthusiast sites like these. And that's not even counting the impact that social portals like Facebook and Myspace have on forum poster retention/new users.

so ridiculous man... 13 weeks and counting. no sign of an agreement between the city and the union. they went to arbitration and then... nothing.

now the mayor has decided to set up a garbage dropoff not too far from the downtown core. it's in a parking lot, right across the street from a nice restaurant with a patio!!! imagine trying to enjoy your meal / beer with that stench right there... UGH

the city looks like hell, is overrun with animals of all kinds.... it's just NASTY here.
i am hoping the province steps in and puts the strikes here and in TO to an end.

Definitely slowing down a lot here. I was thinking of blaming it on summer break.

Gotta think about what it is that draws people to this site in the first place. I found Anandtech forever ago because I was looking for information about selecting parts for a computer and putting them together. It was a couple years after that that I happened across the forums and joined, but for a while my only reason for coming here was to read every article as it came out.

I think my situation is probably more or less typical of every new forum member. The main site must not be holding people's attention long enough to allow them to happen upon the forums, or perhaps there are now so many computer information sites that Anandtech is getting lost in the search engine shuffle more often than not.

The main focus of the site is computer hardware and related information. That's what draws people to the site, and a certain percentage of those people find the forums. Something is going wrong with steps one and two, but it's hard to tell what it is.

i agree. this is one of the main reasons why i dont post anything serious in OT anymore. You pretty much know how the replies are gonna go before you even post...and most of those replies wont be helpful

Yep agreed. Have to remove the asshat trolls first and then you might see more activity. As long as the trash remains, I don't think we'll see more life :/

Asshat trolls are part and parcel of internet forums. If they are removed, traffic will go down, not up.

i think for the most part the trolls get removed. you can't have a perfect society here, as in life, but it's really good compared to the average messageboard.

i think splitting up the forums, and eliminating babe threads had a big negative impact here.
i think we should be allowed to post NSFW pics/threads as long as they are labeled in the title. that would definitely help activity.

Pretty much. And as a moderator you simply can't win. Toss the trolls and people say you are too heavy handed. And then complain that traffic is down. Keep the around and people complain that they are hurting traffic.

Yeah, I don't get the logic behind disallowing babe threads.

You can only hope to please some of the people some of the time. That's life.

What about the switch to vbulletin? was it all a dream?

Well I do think splitting up the forums pretty much left most of the "trolls" in OT. L/R actually serves its purpose as well as the Garage and Health and Fitness when before people who had no interest in those topics would post unhelpful responses.

Still I don't really think declining membership is a problem of trolls but mostly member courtesy in general. Its been a while since I've seen a "polite disagreement". Everyone claims everyone else is taking things way to seriously, yet no one ever backs down just to keep things civil.

EDIT: Video was pretty bad for a while, but somehow its gotten better

And the jokes are old. I see what you did there, bulk beef, stance of dominance, etc. Yawn yawn yawn. Might as well just surround yourself with scripted bots.
