All I heard from a few folks is that it looks like little Arabia. I do not know the details but I do some have some concerns that it may over the next few decades turn this area into a no-go type of situation. Also if I was a atheist butcher, I will never be able to get employment , since only people of the book [which I doubt, since I cannot imagine Christians or Jews saying “Bismillahirrahmanirrahiyyim” when about to kill the cow.]
After seeing some of the islamic ghettos in Europe and UK, I do not want that situation ever to happen in the US.
Atheists are used to being asked to say random religious BS for no obvious reason, because we were asked to say "under god" every morning in school. Except we weren't even paid to do it.

Thanks VG. That's how islamization starts and ghettoisation and next thing you know a Bradfordistan or a Londonistan is created

It's amazing how they start off a test run and then halal meat is slowly increased over a generation and next thing you know 100% is Halal meat. Then comes the sharia court. I am surprised a lefty like me is mad about this while the other liberals are not mad. I do not want the US to slowly veer towards Islamic religious fundamentalism.
Oy vey. Who knew Halal meat was a gateway drug to Sharia law?

They're apparently a majority.

American Christian kids don't care if it's Halal, Kosher, whatever. I matters to some immigrant Muslims, apparently, so it's important to serve what they'll actually eat to meet the goals of the program.

I really don't understand why anybody would get all frothed up about it.

In your industry of work, let's suppose only certain religious groups will get that job, do you think you will get angry about it.

Suppose in Year 0, there are 10 butchers of diff faiths serving 20K populace student population
Y10 - 100% meat bought with govt money and now only halal certified meat slaughter houses get the funds.

Straight up, butchers who are not "people of the book" are excluded from the govt gravy. I have been saying from my OP, that this is fucking unfair.

Not sure about your school. I never had to say under god if I didnt have to.

I am Hindu. I ate chicken sandwich at a Burger King at Abu Dabhi International Airport during a stop over. This was like 4 or 5 years ago. Was expecting it too taste like it does in US. It tasted very different. My dad told me it coupd be because it is made from halal meat, but he is not sure.

At work, we use MREs as emergency rations in our trucks. I'm the guy tasked with replacing them every couple years. I would buy the halal MREs because they used to be made with better ingredients and less empty carbs and sugar. The manufacturers must have lawyered up on sharia law because now the halal MREs have mostly the same crap as the non-halal versions. Now halal MREs are just regular MREs but with chicken only (chicken with stars, chicken with rice). They used to have lamb and beef entrees. Bastards.

Lots of (most?) chicken in the US is bleached (literally washed with a bleach solution) which makes it tastes like ass.

Minus the histrionics, I’m inclined to agree with the OP. Halal meat should be an option but not the only option.

I think there's a pragmatic aspect to it. Although I find religious dietary rules to be silly and have issues with Government/Religion mingling, if Government accommodates for dietary restrictions, at some point it becomes more fiscally responsible under certain circumstances to make what would usually be an exception into the norm.

My main objection to the OPs argument is essentially that Magic Spells are not real and that someone using them as a reason of objection are really just fishing for reasons to not like something.

Exactly this.

The issue of religious accommodation has been made unnecessarily complex by asinine Supreme Court rulings. Within the context of these rulings, offering non-halal alternatives is a reasonable accommodation for religious beliefs.

Generally the only reason Halal meat is better is because it tends to be less industrialized, there really isn't anything special about it.

I don't see how this is any different than public schools serving fish on Fridays in areas with a sizeable Catholic population. 🙄 Like Kosher, Halal foods are very likely to be better for the kids since they eating healthier meals that is actually prepared and cooked at the schools in Dearborn.

If I'm not mistaken, don't Dearborn schools have gardens with the students doing the gardening eat the produce?

This thread reminds me of my first exposure to anti-semitic literature when I was a child. A little rag called "Spotlight" that my father had laying around because he was studying anti-semitism. The article I read was pointing out all the food products with the labels "K" or "U" on them, that this meant some Jew somewhere was being paid to bless this product. And some of these products are provided to people under public assistance like food stamps. Meaning that we the tax payers are paying for these Jews to bless our chow. How dare they.

That was the exact argument I read back then (late 70's) about Jews. Now compare and contrast. Or should I just say compare.

The point is kids get free food sponsored by USDA funds.
- Now 100% of the food is halal - This means people who cannot eat halal or do not believe in meat sanctified to a god they do not believe in, will have to eat vegetarian or bring their own food.
- Also if I were to seek employment at one of those slaughter house, I can never get employed since I am not Muslim.

why the fuck is govt money going towards these slaughtershops.

PETA has made multiple topics about HALAL and they are against it and have brought out whitepapers on this topic. My point is from a food choice and a employment fairness pov.

I don't follow Islam, but I've eaten Halal meat lots of times.

I vaguely remember that rag. Liberty Lobby I think it was.

Yeah, just looked it up. Good old Willis Carto.

Have you been to Dearborn and have you worked in a slaughterhouse?
If the answer to both of these are No, then all your fears are unfounded.

ONE paragraph in a quite lengthy article outlining the complete overhaul of the food program within the district and the OP gets his panties in a wad. How can somebody be this insecure and paranoid?

All the meat served in Dearborn will now be halal. Before some schools offered all halal, while others had a mix, which contributed to confusion about which menu was being served at which school.

Not to mention some schools already offered all Hala and now all will be Hala.
OP, please lighten up. Calm down. Your way of life is not being taken away or even remotely infringed upon.

I'd add that the same food can be deemed both halal and kosher. I've eaten at a restaurant where Muslims and orthodox Jews share ownership and eat at the same tables. The notion that halal is exclusionary strikes me as ridiculous, because I've seen just the opposite!

Yeah, you're totally a lefty liberal, which is why you're using the exact same ridiculously paranoid and fearmongering arguments that RWNJs use to justify their hatred of religious freedom.

Eliminate all religion - problem solved

Good luck with that...

I really don't care about this beyond a school district using public funds to provide special treatment to a religious group. Do they also have a special kosher menu for the Jews in the district?
of course, I'm old enough to remember when school lunches on Friday only offered fish of some kind...usually those nasty things called "fish sticks." Why? Because Catholics.

The menu is probably halal, kosher, and Catholic all at the same time.
