Dean lies about his Brother

Asked by The Quad-City Times, which is based in Davenport, Iowa, to complete the sentence "My closest living relative in the armed services is," Dr. Dean wrote in August, "My brother is a POW/MIA in Laos, but is almost certainly dead."

Seven other candidates responded to question about the armed services. Mr. Kerry said, "They're all retired now," while Senator Bob Graham of Florida, who has since dropped out, cited his brother, Bill, who was in the Air Force in World War II. Senator John Edwards of North Carolina mentioned his father-in-law, a retired Navy pilot, and Senator Joseph I. Lieberman named his nephew, Adam Miller.

As a matter of curiosity, I've got to wonder how a civilian can be classified as "missing in action." I can see a plain old "missing" classification, but "missing in action." I'd be curious about who the other civilians were who were "missing in action." Thirty years ago, Southeast Asia in general and Laos, Cambodia, and Viet Nam weren't fashionable tourist spots -- although thousands of Americans did go there.

Oh, did you mean is currently in the armed forces, or had planned to join the armed services, or if he was in the armed forces at the time of his capture?

"I have no relative, living or deceased or unknown, in the armed forces."

Yes, I can see how unclear and easily misinterpreted the question could be:

My closest living relative in the armed services is

Here is my answer: "None, all have since retired. My father was in the air force, my grandfather in the Navy, my father in law the marines".

Not "well I was in the cub scouts. And my uncle once dressed up as a dead soldier in a peace march".

If any of you actually bothered to educate yourself on the subject, you'd read that Charles Dean might have been in the region for covert government or military purposes. Howard Dean stated that he doesn't believe this and thus rarely ever mentions it, but their father went to his grave thinking it, and their mother still believes it. Howard Dean goes on to say that he will probably never know the truth (I guess if he becomes President they'll clue him in).

But yes, Dean shouldn't have equated his missing civilian brother as a relative in the armed services. Call it a lie if you want. That lie didn't cost us hundreds of American lives and billions of taxpayer dollars...

Wait, don't tell me that you guys are frightened that Dean might actually win! Hell I don't think he stands a chance. That's not because I think Bush is "Da Man" because I don't, I just think that Dean is to liberal. Again we have to pick from the Lessor of two Weasals for President and Bush at least has some experience. Of course I will not be voting for either (not that it matters as I am in MA and the electoral VGotes more than likely will go to Dean)

It remains to be seen if Dean's brother was military or not, and the truth may never be known... lots of dead white boys in indochina from that era who were never claimed by the govt...

I am truly enjoying the desperation of Bush supporters, though. The election is 10.5 months away, and they're already running scared, jumping at shadows, making mountains out of molehills.

Apparently credibility will be a big issue in November, so given that Bush has none, better try to drag Dean down to the same level.... It's a tough job, but I'm sure that somebody will try it...
