I originally had it down b/t the 6000, the 700m, and the 9300. The 700m is too small/barebones for my taste. I like the size but it's no smaller than my current Gateway 200ARC. (Less than an 1" thick) The 9300 is a lil too expensive for my tastes. The 6000 is perfect in every shape, form and fashion IMO. (FOr my tastes I mean)

I think last time you could.

When customizing the laptop, you have the continue button on the bottom, and in one section there are mp3 players and digi's and stuff. Last time you could add those on to your order in order to reach 1500...

Or maybe i'm getting crossed up with the 750 desktop deal IDK...

I think it's the desktop deal, b/c you can buy a monitor with a laptop, but it kinda defies having a laptop then. I'll look into that tomorrow morning 🙂
 
600m = integrated intel crap
700m = integrated intel crap
6000 = ATI Radeon PCIe x300 64 or 128MB, according to many faq's around, it is recomended that you not get integrated crap or else you won't be able to upgrade the graphic card

so 6000 non-intel and 9300 and XPS = upgradeable graphics

There never was a previous $750 deal it was $750 off $1499 just like this one.

Perhaps you're using confusing it with the 40 percent off which was very popular?

according to the At article, as long as they are 2.5' they should be fine... there are comments in newegg section for them that usually say what laptop they put them in....

If it turns out that I cannot do as mentioned above and workout a clean Win XP Pro install, I'll just get it with XP Home and spend the money elsewhere to meet the $1499 price. Either bump up to the 1.8 GHz processor (will this even matter much?) or possibly either the docking station or more likely the wireless router to easily connect to my desktop.

Any comments or tips would be appreciated. I really hadn't planned on spending this much on a laptop for school, but this deal seems too good to pass up.

I do believe you can do what you mentioned in the first paragraph; that is, installing XP using the discs you have and using the Reg key from Dell. Dell always has its Win reg key on the bottom of their laptops, and you should be able to wipe out everything on the prepackaged software that Dell gives you during XP's installation.

FYI, in the most recent laptop packages I've received from Dell, I haven't received any hard copies of the OS's, so you'll probably have to your own discs to install.

Despite all of above, you should check with your school's IT/IS dept and see if you get academic discounts on software products, e.g. WinXP Pro or OS X. $79 is a lot for me when I can spend $10 at school to get WinXP Pro through our Microsoft software program. If your school doesn't have a program like that, then yes, it'll probably be worth the $79. Otherwise, I would put the $79 to something that's not easy to upgrade, e.g. 1.6 -> 1.8 MHz.

I will also get the 700m (assuming I make it in before the coupon dies), but I plan on getting the 8x DVD writer and a 1.8 GHz upgrade. Everything else I plan on getting is the same as your list, but bottom line is you need to get what suits you.

The only thing I worry about is not putting more money into Warranty... I hope that doesn't come back to bite me in the ass next year!
 
does dell include a driver cd for all the hardware? i don't want anything pre-installed crap so i plan to reformart and start off clean.

They do. However, I'd suggest going to their site and downloading the latest drivers. If you're going to go through the trouble of a reformat (I always do), you may as well go directly to the latest drivers.

So should I make sure I can upgrade my graphics card so when that new version of IE or MS Office comes out, I'll be sure to get the best graphics out of them? :roll:

Integrated graphics works just fine for home office oriented laptops like the 600/700m.

there was a 750 off 1500 deal almost identical to this one somewhere around a year ago. Ebay was FLOODED with 700m's for a couple weeks after it.

Those are not on the Inspiron page, and should not be eligible for the coupon. Though there's no way to know if the coupon will work for this config until it goes live, it most likely will not work.
