sorry if im asking a stupid question

anyone SURE that the 300 OFF Instant (in red print) will not apply once the 750$ coupon is entered?

I read the answer above for the 350$ off Dell 9300.. is this the case for the 300$ Off on the other laptops?

Yes it's a stupid question, but it's OK. Better safe than sorry. YES the 300 off WILL be REMOVED once the $750 coupon is entered, so your total will be $450 less than you see now.

So which laptop model is the best bang for the buck?

IMO:

XPS is too expensive
9300 is still too high
700M is too small (screen)
600M is too small (screen)

So 600 is the best choice? any suggestions folks?

Dell small business charges tax.

Back in the day, this was true for all states except for Texas. However, since then, Dell has opened stores and "kiosks" all over the place (WA included). Now, for all those states lucky enough to have a Dell cart in the middle of their mall, we have the joy of paying sales tax :(

Somebody brought up an interesting point earlier that may have been looked over...When you look at the hard drive options(at least on the 9300), they all say 4200 rpm except the 60 gb 7200 rpm.

When you go to "Parts for your Dell" they have a similar selection only they are all 5400 RPM. (except the 60gb 7200, and the 100gb @ 4200)

Is dell really using 4200 RPM or just downplaying it to get you to upgrade??

Well, I want 1GB ram. Keep in mind that according to Dell's 700m manual, only 1 of the dimm slots is accessible to the user (or is the manual wrong?).

Keeping in mind that I want 1GB ram and only 1 dimm slot is accessible, then my choices are either to get:

A) 512mb 1 Dimm (and get 2nd 512mb at crucial)
or
B) 1GB 2 Dimms (512+512).

At Dell, the difference between 512mb 1 Dimm and 1GB 2 Dimms is only $50.

Getting the 2nd 512mb dimm at crucial is $85.99.

It looks like it ends up being more expensive getting the 2nd 512mb dimm at crucial than getting the 2nd dimm at dell.

Is my logic wrong on this?

It really depends on what you're looking for. The 9300 is probably the best deal if you want a huge screen and a powerhouse laptop. The 6000 is a good choice all around, with 15.4" widescreen.

The 700m is only good if you want an ultraportable (with all of its pluses and minuses). The 600m is an in-between model.

I just want a decent laptop. I don't want the top (and pay the most) or the last (too slow/weak). I want a laptop that I can use it as my 2nd computer (weight is not an issue).

6000 = Great, middle-ground, all-around laptop.
700M = For people who want something small.
9300 = For people who want a huge-screen.

600M = Old...not worth the money.

I'm extremely interested in the 700M.

Guess I'll sleep on it & see how I feel about it in the morning. Definitely some awesome deals to be had with this coupon though!

I'm considering purchasing a 700m, but had a few questions I was hoping someone could answer. I'm getting the laptop for school, and plan on installing MS Visual Studio .NET which I use for some classes. The ASP stuff requires that I run XP Pro, so I was planning to spend the $79 on this upgrade. However, I would like to format the machine and do a clean install to get rid of all the Dell crap. Is the software packaged such that I'll be able to do this? Would it be possilble to install XP Pro using the discs from my home computer (Retail XP Pro) and use the registration key from the Dell XP Pro (OEM version?). Or am I better off getting it with XP Home and then purchasing another copy of XP Pro retail and just installing that?

Current plan looks like this:

Intel® Pentium® M Processor 725 (1.60 GHz/400MHz FSB)12.1-in WXGA
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
256MB DDR SDRAM 1 Dimm (+$56 later for a 512)
60 GB Hard Drive
24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive
65 WHr 8-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

$1505 Total

If it turns out that I cannot do as mentioned above and workout a clean Win XP Pro install, I'll just get it with XP Home and spend the money elsewhere to meet the $1499 price. Either bump up to the 1.8 GHz processor (will this even matter much?) or possibly either the docking station or more likely the wireless router to easily connect to my desktop.

Any comments or tips would be appreciated. I really hadn't planned on spending this much on a laptop for school, but this deal seems too good to pass up.

Laptops are always a balance between weight and power/usability.

I think the top choice this time around is the 6000 (with Pentium M and dedicated graphics). The 9300 is good too, but a little more costly, and heavier (but you do get a 17" screen).

If you really need the portability, the 700m is where it's at.

Why would anyone get a Dell DJ with their order? There's no special running on them plus the $750 isn't combinable with any other offer. Unless you just want a MP3 player.

I originally had it down b/t the 6000, the 700m, and the 9300. The 700m is too small/barebones for my taste. I like the size but it's no smaller than my current Gateway 200ARC. (Less than an 1" thick) The 9300 is a lil too expensive for my tastes. The 6000 is perfect in every shape, form and fashion IMO. (FOr my tastes I mean)

It's no wonder I plan on ordering the 6000, nice summary :)
