I'd just be happy to get the drive I ordered. Although burning DVD+R faster would be nice. The $253 I paid for this DVD writer is still cheaper than what I paid for my first CD writer (2x write) 4 years ago! Ah, progress.

I called yesterday and they finally gave me a ETA of Nov 1st for mine. They even upgraded my shipping to overnight. I'm not holding my breath but at least that gives me some hope to cling to.

Mine was "delayed 10/24/02", which is of course today. Just received this email:
We have reviewed your order. Although we had anticipated being able to ship
your order sooner, we are experiencing an unexpected delay. We will not be
able to ship your order until, on or before 11/4/2002. We apologize for
this inconvenience and are doing everything we can to get your order out to
you as quickly as possible.

So another week and a half, maybe.

Called Dell again today. Still haven't shipped the drive they promised they were going to ship yesterday. The CSR told me to call back again tomorrow. All he could say was that "this is a popular item." No sh*t, Sherlock. I'm getting really sick of this.

I called today...waited on hold 15 minutes. Finally gave someone all my information, told him my problem, and he told me I'd have to call a different customer service number (he couldn't transfer me). So I did. Weeded through about 50 menus, entered my order number twice. Finally got on the phone with someone, had to give them my order number AGAIN. Told her my problem, she made me wait about 20 minutes, then came back and said I'd need the S&P department. She did transfer me this time though. I waited again, entered my order number AGAIN, then got a live person. Gave him my order number AGAIN and told him my story. He said "Oh yeah I recognize that part number. There's nothing I can do, you'd have to talk to <some other> department". I asked him to transfer me, he said he couldn't. I asked for the number, he said he didn't have it. I asked him if anyone there had it, he said no. I asked him if anyone working at Dell had this number, he said no. I asked him why it was that there was no one working at Dell in North America who could give me that number, he said he "didn't know". I told him what I thought of him and his company and hung up. NEVER AGAIN will I buy ANYTHING from this effing company. Worst customer service ever.

Well, tomorrow at 11am will be 48 hours after they said my drives "will ship within 24-48 hours". I'll probably be calling them again and get lied to again. I already filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau about this. Not so much about the fact that they haven't shipped my drive because if they are truly out of stock, there's not much Dell can do about it. I filed it because they are continuing to mislead customers by continuing to sell the drive and still quoting a delivery time of 1-2 weeks. That is extremely unethical.

By the way, I placed my order on 10/1, and it is still delayed.

Me too: different SKU# on my delayed order page than the Dell Part#. Is this why other people's orders are being shipped before mine? I ordered 10/1 as well.

Me three!
Can people, who got their drive shipped, report their SKU listed on their order status page?

SKU A0063975... not shipped. $253. Ordered 10/1.

Blech. Email says 11/29. Dell CSR had a difficult time discerning between his a** and a hole in the ground. Maybe I'll call back and get a better one.

just an update from me. Order status still InProduction. Obviously, I was the first one to order this drive, so it doesn't appear like Dell is going in any kind of first come first serve order.

Mine shows shipped and has a UPS tracking number. The SKU on the dell order page is:922642-4. Not very similar to the one you show, nor similar to the standard Dell part numbers.
I ordered 10/1. The description is "2.4X/2.4X DVD+R/RW / 4X/2X DVD-R/RW / 8X"

Get ready for a long story:

I called Dell this morning since it had been 48 hours since when they told me they "would ship my order within 24-48 hours". My CSR said that my status was still to ship within 24-48 hours. When I asked wtf was going on, especially when people were receiving their drives, she said she would check into it and email me back by the end of the day. I then asked if they could upgrade my shipping to "next day" to compensate for this delay and she agreed to upgrade it. She said she would get them to send the drive immediately.

An hour later, I check my status online to confirm that the shipping upgrade went through and my order says CANCELLED. I immediately get on the phone to Dell and my CSR says he has no idea what's going on. After a few words with him as calmly as I could muster, he transferred me to someone he said might be able to help. This new CSR was just an a$$. He said they were cancelling all the orders. When I asked if they could reinstate the order he said I'd have to do that through the ordering department. So he transferred me there. After another 15 minute hold, I got a CSR from the ordering department. I again explained the situation and told him I wanted the order reinstated. He said they couldn't do that because they were cancelling all the orders. I then put the CSR on hold (if they can do that to me, I can do that to them) and went to a computer. I brought up the DVD-writer page to see that they are still selling the drive with a 1-2 week shipping estimate. I got back on the phone with the CSR and b*tched him out about how they can cancel the orders but continue to place more for this drive. He told me it would be until the end of January to receive the drive if I wanted it. I told him that was unacceptable since people were receiving the drive and I was promised that I would have the drive by now. He asked if I wanted a different drive and I told him no and that I wanted my order reinstated. He said he'd transfer me to someone to take care of that and gave me a new extension. And he hung up.

So I called back again and used the new extension. I got another CSR who said he just talked to another person in the same situation as me. He said he'd make a quick call to Order Sales. He transferred me to a rep in Order Sales who agreed to issue a new order at my original price ($253.06) with free next day shipping and would fast-track the order. I talked to 5 different people and was on the phone for over an hour to fix this f*ck-up. But at least my order is reinstated.

Everything's cool right? WRONG!!! My estimated shipping date is now January 20, 2003! Fast-tracking this order my a$$. I hate Dell. :|

We have reviewed your order. Although we had anticipated being able to ship
your order sooner, we are experiencing an unexpected delay and we will not
be able to ship your order until, on or before 12/31/2002. We need your
consent to continue your order and build your system. Please be aware that
unless we receive your consent by (10/28/02), 9PM central time, we are
required by law to cancel your order and provide you with a prompt refund.

We are making an effort to contact you for your consent to continue your
order. If we are unable to reach you, you can reach us at 1-877-868-3355 or
US_DHS_Notify@Dell.com. Once we have received your consent, we will move
forward your order. However, if your order has been shipped or if you have
already received your system and this order number pretains to a promotional
item, you may choose to have your system returned at our expense.

You are a valuable customer, and we are aware of the inconvenience and
apologize for the delay.

Dell Computer Corporation

Ok I think I've figured this idiots out. The reason quite a few have gotten them shipped (ones who ordered Oct 7-9) I ordered on 10/3 is because I'm betting that those who already got their drives NEVER once got an consent to continue email or phone call. I'm guessing each time we consent to continue our order we're placed at the end of the queue once again. In other words a person ordered this sony dvd drive yesterday has a better chance at getting it shipped to them before I'll get mine. Next time our corp dell rep calls to sell us a server I'll politely say how I'm taking my business elsewhere due to unethical business practices of Dell. Not her fault, of course, just Dell as a whole sucks the bigone.

Now I have to go make ANOTHER phone call...this is ridiculous.

Well, if this is true then maybe I'll be getting the drive from my reorder (see above) earlier than I would have for my original order (10/1). This situation has been the worst customer service experience I've ever had. If it wasn't for a couple people who actually made an effort to set things right (like they guy who finally got my order reinstated), I'd have no faith in Dell at all. Unless a better deal comes along, I'll wait for the drive. But Dell will never see my business again.

I just got off the phone with a Dell CSR. He had no idea when the new drives will come in, he had no idea how far along I was in the waiting list, he had no idea when its going to ship. Oh ya what he was sure about was that it will ship out REAL soon

just out of curiosity.......since this deal no longer exists...can't this be moved to a different forum so people (like me) don't think it's back on?

I like having this thread here because it lets me see what the status of other people getting their orders. I would suggest altering the title to say DEAD instead of HOT!

I'm not going to go back and re-read all the posts in this thread, but I do recall someone saying that ups was scheduled to deliver to them by now, but I haven't seen anyone post that they actually have received it from Dell.

Ask again on Monday. I hope I will be able to say that I got it. ;)
According to UPS, my drive is has made it from Dallas, TX to Ohio. I am in MI, so it is getting close.

They have me scheduled for Monday delivery. I hope I am here to sign for it, or else I'll be waiting an extra day to pick it up, instead of "hit or miss" delivery.
