Why doesn't DI have a versus mode?

Games like call of duty, counter-strike, l4d/l4d2, and team fortress 2 prove that replayability is in team warfare, why did the developers of DI leave a versus mode out?

My opinion, co-op is only going to keep people interested for "so" long. Once the co-op gets old, people will be going back to games like black ops, tf2, l4d/l4d2, counter-strike,,,,,,.

How long can a co-op game keep someones interest before they get bored?

Ever since the release of games like team fortress and counter-strike, the focus has been on team warfare - there are a few exceptions like borderlands, but for the most part the popular games are based on teams fighting each other.

After playing through borderlands on co-op, I knew there was no way it had the replayability like what l4d/l4d2 does. And the same will probably go for DI.

Does anyone that has DI expect it to be a 500+ hour game? How about 1,000+ hours?

This is one of the dumbest posts I've read. How can you compare such different games in such a silly manner.

I do not understand why you call my post dumb?

Buy dead island, come back and post when you're bored. Do you think you will hit the 100 hour mark before your bored?

Have you ever played left 4 dead or left 4 dead 2? People like playing the infected better then playing the survivors. So give the people what they want.

Games need to keep up with the times. Playing co-op in a zombie game is not staying with current trends. Playing a co-op or single player zombie game, is like playing pong in single player, or talking to yourself in a chatroom.

Having some kind of versus mode in dead island would have greatly increased its replayability. Team based games over the past decade have proven that point time and time again.

I've played plenty of L4D and it is a completely different style of game compared to Dead Island. L4D is clearly designed for multiplayer while Dead Island feels like a single player game with co-op thrown in as an afterthought.

My point is there are plenty of well made single player games that are enjoyable despite only having a few hours of game play. Not everything needs to be multiplayer to be considered a good game.

Like I said, game developers need to keep up with current trends.

What are the greatest games of all time? Doom, Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress Classic, Team Fortress 2, world of warcraft,,,,,; why were those games great, they were deathmatch or team based games.

There are exceptions, such as fallout, fallout 3, fallout new vegas, half-life, half-life 2,,, which are single player games.

Doom was single player, but had lan support for multiplayer.

For dead island to be a great game, its going to need to be on a half-life, half-life 2 or fallout scale.

You know what games people do not remember, or rarely mention, the games that did not have multi-player, where not epic or were full of bugs. How many people talk about Sin or Blood as being great games? They were released around the same time as quake, doom and duke nukem.

So far it seems that dead island is starting off like homefront or brink, and off to a buggy start.

I'm not saying Dead Island is great, I haven't played it enough to make that judgement. However saying that every game needs multiplayer to be great is just stupid.

The last thing we need are more cookie cutter multiplayer only games with a shallow and useless single player mode. There are plenty of games I love which I have no interest to see in a multi player environment.

I believe there are more 'exceptions' than there are games that follow your 'rule'

Quite a few actually. Well, maybe not Sin, but Blood is a bloody awesome game. (Pun intended?)

Anyway, I'm glad to see Dead Island is keeping up with current trends. And by "current trends", I mean "releasing totally unfinished and full of bugs". ;)

Please re-read my post

For dead island to be a great game, its going to need to be on a half-life, half-life 2 or fallout scale.

Half-life, half-life 2 and the fallout series are single player games.

I did not say "every game needs multiplayer to be great". There are lot of great single player games out there.

Why are you glad DI is full of bugs?

I spit coffee out my nose thnaks to you. And I presordered LOL......
Just cause it looked semi different. I like the crafting. I like the coop. Hell, I just finished Borderlands single last night. So yes, I will be playing the SP in this game as well.
Honestly? I was PRAYING for the end on Borderlands. It was too much "wash rinse repeat". And then the ending? SCREW YOU FREE DLC. Man that was the worst ending after MANY hours.
As I suck in these type of games. I WILL add drama to ANY group I join. I am an admitted "Turtle" Slow and hunker down. My kids HATED playing LFD and LFD2 with me but we all laughed till we cried. Run and gun. these eyes and reflexes are old.
I just saw a trailer where we have to fill a car with gas. (OK, pretty cheesy they STOLE that right from LFD2. There is a knock). That was a mission in LFD2 we spent MANY hours on as they had the "Keeper Handicap"..... The horde was WAY overpowering to me.
Hoping the RPG element of this game allows me to play to my strengths.
If not, oh well; we will have HOURS of entertainment. Together. Even if it is to explore and find out...Man, this sucks. We will have more fun both in quality and quantity than many movies we have seen together. That I am sure. 50 bucks? Hell, we have each seen a 2 bad movies this past year with our significant other.
I have hung out at really bad bars, drinking and eating HALF that easy.
Oh yeah. I will get $50 out of this. Thats a promise.
I loved the onne review I read where the reviewer gave up "hack and slash" mass killing of zombies. Survival and the end objective is what drove them. Makes me think "OK, Imersion is decent". I am a little bummed the death penalty is light though. And this is speaking from one who WILL DIE EARLY AND OFTEN.
I love a game where you are vested TO survive.

Just my 2 cents.

I think the developers of dead island have shown how much they care about the consumer.

Instead of unlocking the game on Friday and giving people a 3 day weekend to play, the game is unlocked in the last few hours of labor day.

~~ EDIT ~~

I think I will be boycotting dead island, just because they waited until the end of monday to release the game. People get a 3 day weekend, and the publisher / developers can not even give the consumers something to play? Blah.

If you look back at 3 day weekends and games being released, you'll see this happens often. I personally dont understand it, as I am more likely to buy a game to play over a long weekend, as I think most people are, but it doesnt happen that way. Even if its releasing a week early on Tues so you can play over the long weekend.

I think there is the thought that people go and do things on long weekends, and they are not necessarily around to buy and play, but the target demographic would seem more likely to play games over the period.

Anyways, anyone playing as Purna? I need to see some gunplay before I buy, as I dont like melee. So far all the gameplay on Youtube seems to be of melee characters.

from what I have gathered about this game so far, it is so NOT a game that should be MP.

quake and doom were released around the same time? really? are you SURE?

thats just silly, id made both, and obviously didnt release them head to head.

duke nukem 3d launched against quake.

dark forces lauched between doom 2 and quake and people still remember it think it was great, and it was SP only

I'm glad I didn't pick this up, especially with the wrong version being released on Steam.

Ars has a scathing review up, Dead Island offers flashes of fun in unfinished, buggy PC release.

To play the PC version of Dead Island in its current form you're going to need incredible patience and a willingness to fight through some very clunky game mechanics. As it stands, I can't recommend this in any way, shape, or form. This is a game that needed more time to bake, and hopefully after a few patches we'll be able to enjoy the game hidden under the unpolished exterior.

Can someone who has bought dead island check something for me?

Before you start the game - ctrl+alt+del, start task manager, performance tab.

Start dead island, play for a few minutes

alt+tab out of the game

Look at task manager, how many cores are being used? If the game is multi-threaded, the load should be distributed across all of the cpu cores.

from what I have gathered about this game so far, it is so NOT a game that should be MP.

quake and doom were released around the same time? really? are you SURE?

Doom - released 1993
Quake - released 1996

Have you ever played left 4 dead or left 4 dead 2? People like playing the infected better then playing the survivors. So give the people what they want.

still waiting my DI game, but this is wrong to me.

I played l4d and l4d2. Though since the survivors were nerfed, games become crap very easily for them and so I found myself playing the game even less.

One of the things that helped make l4d/l4d2 suck was people that only wanted to play infected. I found that they would actually kill themselves (when survivors) just to get the teams to swap. Just how is having a mode that allows such greefing be a good thing?

Personally a game that gets those sorts of player away from games I want to trying and enjoy is just a "Good thing" and more games should have something similar.

Each to their own gaming style I agree with, just if your style does not match mine, do not carry on about it and wreck my enjoyment.
