I was on the fence but bit once I saw it for $34 at green man gaming with the coupon 20SUM-MERSA-VINGS:

http://www.greenmangaming.com/games/action/dead-island/

I am preloading it right now. From what I've seen it looks like Fallout 3 with Zombies. If you search youtube (or IGN) there's a few vidoes of the first half an hour or so of gameplay if you're not sure about it.

i tried buying from gmg and had to get a refund bc they ran out of keys
buyer beware

I think the developers of dead island have shown how much they care about the consumer.

Instead of unlocking the game on Friday and giving people a 3 day weekend to play, the game is unlocked in the last few hours of labor day.

~~ EDIT ~~

I think I will be boycotting dead island, just because they waited until the end of monday to release the game. People get a 3 day weekend, and the publisher / developers can not even give the consumers something to play? Blah.

GMG also had a problem with Deus Ex HR where their codes wouldn't allow a user to preload the game. They fixed it within two or threee hours and then the owners could preload so they seem to be on the ball with fixing their errors at least.

First off I think it's the publishers decision when to release the game, not the developers. Second, all the media releases (Blu-ray, Video games, etc.) get released on Tuesdays. I'm guessing that it has something to do with the brick and mortar stores and there's nothing the publishers can do about it. Still, releasing it a week earlier would've been nice.

Yes, because games usually get released on Fridays and not Tuesdays and they are laughing at you not being able to play a game that you'll give up on so easily. They should have had to work through the holiday weekend though!!!1

I do not care when things are "usually" done.

We had a 3 day weekend, the game should have been released before the weekend.

The publisher is dangling the game in front of the consumers like candy in front of a child.

dead island gets unlocked somewhere near midnight, then people have to go to work or school the next day. Its somewhere around 18 hours after release when we finally get to play. Making people wait that long to play a game is stupid.

Most publishers suck :( It just amazes me how much they get paid to screw over the consumers. Always better to deal directly with the developer. Unfortunately boycotting does little but punish the developers; after all the publishing ceo will take his pay + bonus for firing the developers when things don't work out :)

Ok Ok I'm being cynical but unfortunately there is a bit of truth.

Anyways is this game any good ?

Publishers set the release dates, B&M stores prefer Tuesdays because it increases sales on what would otherwise be the slowest days of the week. The same B&M stores put it in the contracts with the publishers that the game will not be available via DD any earlier than in the stores. They know that a large percent of "gamers" will buy the game however they can first, if its on steam a whole weekend before you can buy it at best buy, where would you buy it.
So don't hate on the devs, they don't owe it to you to make sure you've got something to do on the long weekend. Go play outside or something.

I probably would have ordered this at GMG if it wasn't coming out the same day/week as Space Marine. Can't wait, 5 hours I think till unlock :D

Joystiq review said it was good but lacked polish, but he seemed pissed about weapons deteriorating and having to search for stuff.

I want it, but with Resistance 3 and Driver San Francisco releasing, I'll pass until it gets cheaper.

That's exactly what I was thinking yesterday. My brother preordered it, it won't unlock till Monday at midnight but he has to work tuesday mourning. So why not unlock it friday night and go on a marathon session?

That makes perfect sense to me.

Timing the release of DI to coincide with the twilight hours of a long weekend, shows nothing but contempt for the average consumer.

The game should have been released either last tuesday or last thursday.

lol yes because everyone in the world works an office job and gets a three day weekend for the holiday

Seriously, stop being a little cry baby. Games almost always get released on Tuesday. It's nothing new.

Picked up a copy, heard it's a lot like Fallout 3 in structure, but with zombies. Generally it's been doing pretty favorably, and apparently there's at minimum 30 hours of playtime. Reviews/previews I've seen also say it's definitely better in coop mode with 2-4 people, so I want to jump in at release while people are still playing it.

So. It would still be a good idea to release before a weekend and not necessarily at midnight either, why not at noon Friday? or Thursday midnight for pre-pays? Works for the movie industry.

That's okay, I bought 2 copies, one for me and one for my son, so I got you covered!

Posts like this constantly show me that there are no lack of people on the internet who think it should be their way or no way. Yeah, I got a 3 day weekend, too, and yeah, it would have been awesome to play Dead Island on my 3 day weekend.

It's nice to want things.

I admire that you bought your son a copy, and spend time with your son playing games.

Getting a new game on a 3 day weekend is not out of reach of the consumer. I vote with my pocketbook, and I vote that releasing the game on thursday would be better then midnight on monday.

I think you mean it works for the movie THEATER industry... because DVDs and Blu-rays release on Tuesdays as well.
