Are you guys installing the latest Server 2003 chipset drivers, or the "recommended" ones Intel lists for the SS4200?

Yet another question. 🙁

What's the proper procedure for updating\installing drivers once WHS is up and running?

Personally, I just Remote Desktop into it and run Windows Updates and install updates. It's the same as any other Windows machine.

I didn't have to install any other drivers though. Only Windows Updates

sillly question... but if you install WHS does it take up one of the 4 hdd's? or does it take up that same space where Lifeline was installed? (is this a hdd or a flash memory?)

HDD. WHS requires a minimum of 80GB of HDD space to install. The 256MB DOM isn't nearly big enough even for the base install.

Install the GPIO drivers.

Why does the flashing blue power LED light mean on the SS4200? The reason I ask is that mine is blinking. That DOS folder I posted (and used) includes the latest GPIO drivers, but my power button is still flashing. I went ahead and just downloaded the latest version again from Intel's web site and installed them. Upon reboot, my power button is still flashing blue. So what is the actual meaning of the flash?

Install BOTH the GPIO/SIO driver set according to the instructions *AND* the Intel Hardware Monitor add-in for WHS. Then the light will either stop flashing or be flashing to indicate a problem which should show up in the Intel hardware monitor.

Ok, it was the Hardware Monitor add-in not being installed. The light has stopped flashing and I now have a Hardware Monitor tab in the admin tool. Thanks for the info!

Nevermind - I fixed the problem. Apparently a setting within my router changed and I had to fix it and then reboot the WHS.

Now my web page embedded admin tool now works correctly!

Do I need to format a new drive before installing WHS via the USB way?

Thanks!

I did not have to. The slipstream install automatically formats and partitions the drive as needed.

I think I read that you do not want the drive to be an active primary OS partition? But I'm not sure as my drive was pulled from my desktop system and was being used as a storage drive...so it wasn't set as the primary OS drive.

EDIT: I just installed the E2220 I got from eWiz yesterday....and WOW what a difference. I tested my write speed to the server and was getting around 30-35 MBps. I shut it down, threw in the new chip, booted up and I'm now getting 65-71 MBps!

Hi.

Would be nice if someone who has gotten a slipstreamed USB working to make it available on an FTP site in ISO format.

Saves a lot of time and waste!

Why can't you follow them instructions with your own media? It's very simple if you follow it step by step. Heck, I even posted a link to the DOS files (from WGS) that make it even easier! It honestly took me maybe 30 minutes to make mine.

My WHS media probably couldn't be used by others anyway. It's listed as "OEM" and I downloaded it from my Action Pack. It may only work with OEM keys.

Another Q: When installing the trial version WHS what product code do I enter into the qs.ini file? I left the 00000000"s, will this be a problem? Sounds to be installing fine but it might help others to know..

Good question, to which I have no real answer. I do know that I saw someone ask this question on WGS because they were having problems with their install. One comment was the date on the machine was wong and when the machine updated the date changed and it moved outside of the evaluation date and that locked windows down. Not sure though about all the details.

If the time/date issue gets you (i.e. WHS insists it must be activated immediately upon you initial connection) then simply re-run the installation procedure a second time. This time the date and time will be correct and you will have the full 30 days to mess around with it before activation is required.

What are your temps showing, and if possible can you run CPU-Z and see if Speedstep is running properly? Did you have to make any changes in the BIOS? (probably not since it's essentially the same thing as the Celeron 420, just with 2 cores)

That is pretty insane

I did not have to make any BIOS changes. I'm not even sure how the heck I'd get into the BIOS as I'm running this in a headless enviroment. I just shut it down, open it up, threw the CPU in there with some Artic Silver and booted it back it. I checked Windows to make sure it was showing correctly. It showed as an E2220 @ 2.4ghz.

I checked the hardware monitor and the CPU was showing 30 and the case was showing 45 i think it was.

I will install CPU-Z tonight and make sure everything is running correctly and post any info you are interested in seeing. I didn't get much into it yesterday, but just looking at windows info it appeared to be running at proper speeds and not being throttled.

Excellent. I have an E2140 coming, so I'm just curious how the heatsink and air flow hold up, especially since you have a chip that's 800MHz faster - temps are sounding reasonable. I'll be swapping in some AS5 myself. 🙂 Very interested to see if speedstep is running properly though.

WOW u went and did all those upgrades? 😀

I actually sat down with a calc, and started totaling up stuff.

If i added all the options the member posted suggested, this unit would cost as much as my 2P Sammy.

In that regards, i gave up on it.
But im interesting to know how much of a boost it would get with all those upgrades.

I've installed CPU-Z and these are the results.

1.2Ghz - Idle

2.4Ghz - In use

It appears to sit at 1200 and then move up to 2400 when I start opening windows and doing things like using paint. I'm assuming this is the correct behavior for Speedstep?

My temps are 30 CPU and 48 Board temps. I'm pretty sure the CPU was 30 with the Celeron as well.

Is this what you wanted to know? Let me know if the results I'm seeing with this CPU are not correct!

OK, got everything installed for WHS and was able to connect and set everything up. Very cool, that was last night. Now today I cant reconnect via RDC or the WHS Console? I can connect to the shared drives but thats it? Did I do something wrong? Both say server can't be found at all, not a credential issue.
