Thanks! I'll fire it up here when I get the box rolled out.

Anybody know where to get some cheap 2GB DDR2 for this box? I have an E4600 on the way.
This thread has been extremely helpful. Thanks guys. Box is working great.
Well I can tell you this. 4 Solid Drive lights is good. The blinking blue power light means that hardware monitoring is finding something "wrong" (probably that the disks are not mounted/formatted). Amber means something hardware isn't working (eg: no drives attached/reset). You need to get logged in to the unit and format the drives.Great, solid orange light with no disks in now... this thing is a piece of crap. (yet still blinking power light with 4 drives in, drive lights are all solid btw)

No hardware upgrades as I can't login to do any firmware updatesI did manage (once) to get into the software with no drives but again, cant update without drives. All 4 drives were wiped of any partitions with gparted. Should I format them with a partition or leave them unallocated? I appreciate the help, this shouldn't be this difficult!

That's the latest.Had the same thought as you and tried the Seagate util to 0 the first 63 of all drives, no dice, so I'm trying a low level now... this thing is a wee bit picky. Anyone know if there is more current EMC firmware than the 1.0.8? I see Intel has a newer version but not sure they are the same. (File name structure is the same.. EMCNTG-1.1.11.32736.tgz)
What are the benefits of making this thing headless? Why does MS insist that WHS be configed this way? Doesn't make any sense. A video port of some kind would make it a lot easier to get these things up and going.
I'll bite - what is a "sammy"?

On 14 March 2006, Intel released a dual-core processor codenamed Sossaman and branded as Xeon LV (low-voltage). Subsequently an ULV (ultra-low-voltage) version was released. The Sossaman was a low-/ultra-low-power and double-processor capable CPU (like AMD Quad FX), based on the "Yonah" processor, for ultradense non-consumer environment (i.e. targeted at the blade-server and embedded markets), and it was rated at a thermal design power (TDP) of 31 W (LV: 1.66 GHz, 2 GHz and 2.16 GHz) and 15 W (ULV: 1.66 GHz)[4]. As such, it supported most of the same features as earlier Xeons: Virtualization Technology, 667 MT/s front side bus, and dual-core processing, but it did not support 64-bit operations, so it could not run 64-bit-only server software, such as Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, and therefore it was limited to only 16 GB of memory. A planned successor, codenamed "Merom MP" was to be a drop-in upgrade to allow Sossaman-based servers to upgrade to 64-bit capability. However, this was abandoned in favour of low-voltage versions of the Woodcrest LV processor leaving the Sossaman at a dead-end with no planned upgrades.
Holy smokes, that's something else!
So, I don't want to sound like a dick, but has anyone else done any speed testing (w/ WHS or EMC OS, upgrade or stock)? That just seems like more than I would expect. I'm no expert, but I did a little checking on cnet, and they were very complimentary of NAS systems getting ~50MB/sec:

I ordered from Legend Micro when the price was $135 (I actually ordered it @ $149 a day before the sale, but I emailed them before they shipped and got refunded $14), so I'm not opposed to dropping some more $$ in the thing but I'm a cheapskate at heart...
I can get WHS from a Technet license, and I'm sure I have some extra DDR2 RAM laying around (although probably only 1GB sticks). However, I don't have an appropriate CPU so I'd have to buy one. If I knew for sure that I could get double throughput for +$60, I'll take it. But I'd prefer if I could get more confirmation first.
No offense LikeLinus I just don't like to rely on n=1 when I make decisions![]()
I've got mine up and running but hardware monitoring wont load. I loaded the add-on and no hardware devices show uninstalled. Any ideas?
