Actually, I did some calculations and with the price of the drive $160 after taxes and assuming that media could be gotten for $1 a pop and hard drives could be had for $1/gigabyte I would need to burn at least 40 DVDs before the price of drive+media even meets the price of the backup hard drive:

$160 dvd-r drive +$40 one-dollar 5 gigabyte dvd media disks=$200 for 200 gigabytes of storage(write-once, rewriteable media is much more expensive).
where as 200gb of hd disk space could be had for $200 or even less(remember $30 for 80gb hard drives? or $50 for $120gb??). And that is rewriteable.....

I'll pass on the backup untill the dvd writers hit $100

I bought the HP 200I from the Friends and Family deal in advance. Will price adjust tomorrow. I have read glowing reviews on the HP burner....CNET says it is the fastest, most reliable at this time (although the software bundle is crap).

It would seem that the Sony DRU-500A is getting the highest ratings due to its multi format compatibility..but it is running ~150.00 more. I am keeping the HP 200I and will learn the ins and outs with it....maybe later when prices fall and a standard format wins out I will buy a better one.

I think some of you are missing the point as far as using this as a backup tool and comparing it to using a hardisk for the same purpose. A DVD-R/RW will easily provide off site backup of your data. It will also provide an additional source of data incase your harddisk backup fails. I currently have 2 harddisks in my computer. The extra one is for backups which I run nightly. I also backup my data to CD-R's as well as to a 20 gig tape disk monthly. I'm going to be using the DVD-R to replace my CD-R backups. I also have a notebook where I mirror my data occasionally. At any one time I have 5 copies of my data which I can rely on in case anyone fails. This might be overkill for some but when you have 3+ years of digital pictures, plus other important data you can never have too much. Relying on an extra harddisk to backup your data is not sufficient in my case

I just received my Cendyne DVD-R/RW Drive email confirmation with a delivery date of 10-28.

They have removed the drive from their web site, but it may be still be able to order over the phone (1-877-633-4236) and use a $50 off $250 phone-in coupon code (A-????)

FYI Cendyne website explicitly states that this is a pioneer drive.

Kinda weird as I've never seen a company boasts about a rebadged drive they are selling.

On the other hand, they must be thinking that since Pioneer is a name brand, it can be a selling point.

OM web site is very slow. I placed an order by phone. After I said that I wanted to use a coupon, the sales rep asked: "The $50 off $250 one?" I said: "Yes." She didn't ask me for the coupon code. :)

You can also order it from Staples by phone. It will be cheaper.

I just did this deal

(Update #1) Staples is also selling the Cendyne DVD-R/RW Drive for $329.98 with a $50 rebate that expires this Saturday 10-26 and there's also a $50 off $200 Staples coupon around, so you can buy it now and PM the OfficeMax in-store price of $249.99 on Sunday.

The deal : Cendyne DVD-R/RW Drive $329.98 - $50 off $200 Staples coupon = $279.98 - $88.00 PM (110%) = 191.98 - $50 MIR = $141.98 You may have to add a "$8.02" item to keep your total above $200 so you don't lose the $50 coupon after the PM.

it seems that the OM deals is gone, so no price matching, and the $50 coupon requests a 16 digit code after you enter it, so that won't work...nice try though

Would an external USB 2.0 case allow this drive to work correctly. I mean, would the data stream be sufficient to burn a dvd -r in an external USB 2.0 case? Media is still to expensive to experiment.....any thoughts?

I had the same problem until I cleared out my cookies and the Staples $50 off $200 coupon worked fine when I used it few hours ago. Also you can place a phone order using the same coupon code.

Also the CSR says I can PM a OfficeMax store on sunday when the price goes down, just give them a phone number of a store that you know has the drive in stock and they will PM it.

According to Dells website, this drive has buffer underrun for DVD and CD buring while the SONY only has 8MB buffer and no buffer protection.

However, I read somewhere that this drive only has buffer underun protection for burning CDs only.

Hmm....

If it does indeed have a Buffer protection for DVD burning, it's 2X speed might be more acceptable since the user can be multitasking.

maybe this drive might be better than SONY if true.

I bet there will be a "sub $100" DVD writer deal the day after thanksgiving

You're on. I'll put $10 up saying there won't be. (Notice my lack of confidence, however, evidenced by a paltry $10 bet.)

i just got off the phone w/ staples... they rejected a PM since it "wasn't avaialbe on the web site." From what i've noticed, I've had success when i get a female operator.. at least 90% of the time when i get one. anyone successful w/ a staples PM today?

I got a new email from OfficeMax today with my tracking number, so it looks like I will soon be a DVD-burning mofo. For media, I just now placed an order for a 100-pack of Ritek at SuperMediaStore.
