Got this off from http://www.dvdadept.com/DVD_NewTech.asp

So I guess the DVD-RW cant be used in home DVD players and it also cant be played or read on PC DVD drives. hmmm....
I wonder if DVD-R is any better...

"The main drawback of DVD technology for today is¡¦ yes, it is DVD-ROM, or Read Only Memory, technology. With the perfect picture and sound quality available on DVD discs everybody wants to have recordable or better rewritable DVDs like we have CD-Rs and CD-RW today. As you probably know, several DVD-rewritable formats have been already developed: DVD-RAM, DVD-RW and DVD+RW. Hitachi even produced it DZ-MV100A video camera that uses DVD-RAM disks for recording. But DVD-RW and DVD-RAM are not backward compatible with existing consumer electronics DVD-Video and PC DVD-ROM drives. This is the main reason why these standards are not widely used. "

EDIT: one more articel from ZD-net

I got this drive and it works very well.
Not using any of the software that came with it, except for WinDVD. I use NERO to burn DVDs.

And just a note: most stand alone DVD players do play either DVD-R/DVD-RW or the DVD+RW format. Depends on your player, just the same as CD-Rs and CD-RW.
For more info check out vcdhelp Very informative and helful site. Also a good source on information where to find the media. I bought DVD-RW disks for $1 a pop. Try finding a much better deal.

didn't try that, but I backed up some movies and it works very well. Only reads at 2x but, good enough.

Does this show up as cendyne or pioneer in the bios? I ask because if we wanted a firmware update w/o screwing the warranty, could we flash w/ what's up to date from pioneer?

A pretty good deal... may do this instead of splurging (and waiting) for the sony deal from dell... heh.

Can't tell you what it shows up as before the update. I flashed mine and now it shows up as Pioneer, don't remember what it was before.
I think if you go to Cendyne's website and want to dl the patch you actually get redirected to a Pioneer site.

Regardless, it is the Pioneer drive. I know that much. There is some other thread about this when it was $249 at offimax, or was that office depot? Not sure anymore. Still waiting for that rebate to come in.

I have the Pioneer A03. A dvd-rw can be used in my dvdrom and ALL of my stand alone dvd players. Also, there is a hacked firmware that aloows all "good quality" dvd-r's to be burned at 2x speed. If you get this (Cendyne)you will find only a handful of dvd-r's that can be burned at that speed but they are mostly exspensive. Since I did the firmware hack I have been using Riteks that cost me $.84 each shipped and they have worked perfectly at 2x and with no blockiness. I was considering moving up to this model or even the newer A05 due out soon but since have shelved that idea now that I can do 2x.

This is a quality drive and at a fantastic price. :)

Well, Let me ask another question. since a dvd holds 4.7gig could you store an entire library of mp3 on to one disk then play that back through your dvd player. I have an apex dvd player that plays just about any format. would it be able to play back all of those mp3's?

I would rather spend my money on a dvd burner and burn what he's got. And what about discs that are double sided 9gig. How would you burn that?

thanks for helping me out.

Hmmm, I don't think this is the appropriate place to be asking your illegal pirating questions. In the future, you would probably want to ask the same question in regards to backing up things you already own. Making copies of your friends movies is quite illegal... no matter whether you can afford it or not.

Also, I don't think the backups that you are going to make are going to be nearly as good quality since most DVDs these days are multi layer which makes them more than the 4.7GB that you can burn with DVD recorders today.

It shows up as a Pioneer, and the bios upgrades downloadable directly from Pioneer work perfectly. Great burner. Burned movies work with every stand-a-lone I've come across.

No, the backup process is not as easy as just putting in the DVD and pressing COPY. Typically the movies you own on DVD are dual-layered discs, which means that the DVD contains 9.4GB of data on ONE SIDE of the disc. DVD Burners currently only use discs that have a single layer of 4.7GB. That is HALF the size of your standard DVD. So in most cases when you are making copies you'll have to use several intermediate programs to rip the movie, select features to keep, compress, and then copy to blank DVD. It really is an UGLY process right now. My advice to the standard consumer is: Don't buy a DVD Burner for the sole purpose of copying movies right now.

say I have a divX of blade 2 for example, that is two cd's (approx 1.4 gigs), and uses the ac3 surround sound codec for audio. How well would something like that look if I converted it to dvd format (mpeg2 i think) and played it on a 36" sony wega tv? Would I still be able to encode the surround sound into the dvd to play on my dolby 5.1 home theatre system? Would the video look as good as it does when the divx is played on the computer, or would it lose alot of quality like when you make a vcd?

I can't speak to the legality/illegality of copying your friend's DVD movies but I've been going to computer shows lately and there's always one vendor that displays hundreds of different DVD titles. Many of these are some of the greatest movies ever made. However, any honest and close inspection reveals that these are obviously pirated, produced in Singapore or Hong Kong. Sometimes they even mispelled the titles! If that's not illegal, how illegal can it be to copy your friend's DVDs? If it IS illegal, it's pretty apparent that nobody is going after that vendor. I've read about Asian software piracy, but I "saw it with my own eyes". :D

How is this drive compared to the HP200i that can be picked up during friends and family for $130?

Wolverine88,
Thanks for the heads-up that it is already $249 on the website. Used a $50 coupon and ordered today; also printed off the rebate form which shows purchase must be made between 10-04-02 and 11-02-02. One more thing, OM has this identified as a 1 Day Delivery item so I'll receive it on Monday, 28 Oct (same day as my Dell 4550 is scheduled to arrive!!!!!). Now to order that 256MB PC2700 RAM from Googlegear for $72 with free FedEx delivery! Monday will be a busy day!!

Which media type works in my set-top dvd player? DVD-R, DVD-RW?

I'm going to buy one of these and I want to make sure I buy the proper media to backup my DVD movies so that they work in both my computer and stand alone set-top dvd player
