The WD SE is slightly faster in everything exept the sustained data tranfer benches (ATA133 gave Maxtor a slight lead there) The 8MB Cache on the Maxtor does make it faster, but the drive is not as optimized to use the larger cache as WD's offerings.

If the prices were the same get the WD SE, if the Maxtor is $10 or more cheaper get the Maxtor. I have one of each, now.....time to mail in some rebates.

Sillyfrogger, where did you find the printable of the $20 off $100? They gave me grief over the 5 digit code, and asked me to bring in the printed copy. Could you supply me a link?

I found the $20 off $100 from a hint in one of these posts. I clicked on one of those "crazy" coupon links on left side of forum. I printed web page popup which had code and brought it to a local BM here in RI. The clerk readily accepted it, punched it in and it worked. She did however keep my printed copy for her records.

Today is last day for coupon code. Good luck. Hope it works for you. Now alll I have to do is wait for rebates!!

I'm in. Had great luck with getting the WD rebates from a previous deal ($30 for 60 gig), so I'll try my luck with this one. Plus, I need another drive ;-)

Outpost.com is selling 80GB 8MB Maxtor Hard drive for $ 59.99 after a $50 MIR have Staples PM the after rebate price and more $$$$. Unless the CSR forgets they will add $7.95 for Outpost.com's overnight shipping cost.
The rebate expires today

Oooo--interesting possibility! We can always count on the mystical one for sweetening the deal!

BTW, my HD arrived yesterday--Is the guy pictured on the box dorky or what? :p

If I buy the HD today but staples can only ship it in 5 days, how does it affect my rebate status?

Good question. The receipt that was included in my delivery listed both the order date and the ship date. I guess you can circle the order date, it will show that you bought it within the rebate period.

It's incredible how some of you are lucky enough to get these PM to go through. I tried the PM to CompUSA and was rejected because the price of the Staples drive is lower AFTER the rebate. For fun, I read the rules on their site, and sure enough there is a little clause in there. It also says they won't PM other online vendors. I know others have done it, so I'm not saying it won't work, but I guess you just need to get the right CSR and be persistent enough to call 20 times if necessary ;)

I just returned from my local Staples B&M with my new drive. The only drives they had were the ones in the new style box showing 1 year warranty, had them look at all the stock they had to see if they had the 3 year warranty drive, they didn't. I got this same drive at the same store 3 weeks ago and the drive had 3 year warranty, and drive mounting rails, the new box dosen't have the drive rails.

The drives are the exact same Maxtor part #, the spec sticker on the box with the UPC code is exactly like the one I got 3 weeks ago, except for the serial # of course. So don't be afraid to ask them if they have the old style box with the lady sitting at a monitor, not the one with the dude with the dipstick grin.....

I was a bit bummed about not getting a 3 year warranty with the drive, but lets face it a nice 80 GB drive for $30. after MIRs is a HOT DEAL...that's why we come here right ...

Yes of course I used a $20. off $100. coupon

Mine arrived in the mail today, also only 1-year warranty. Liquid bearings though...I guess all their drives are liquid now?

I just did the PM to Outpost.com, got $13.04 back, so my total cost if both rebates go through is around $17 + taxes on $57.

I used a $30 rebate from rebatesHQ.com on the exact drive a while ago and was wondering how long it takes the guys at rebatesHW.com to receive your paperwork. Anyone?

The policy states:

Staples STORES do not price match against prices found on competitor internet sites.

Stores = B&M, not www.staples.com or 1-800-STAPLES. Staples.com and Staples Direct (1-800) will PM online stores. YMWRV (Your mileage will really vary) with B&M PMing online stores.

They didn't give you any grief because you used the $20 off $100 coupon? Using that coupon makes it the same price as the Outpost drive not including the second $30 rebate.

TRY HERE

I will have to go back today with the printout of the $20 off $100 coupon. The manager would not take just a hand written code from me. If it is the same manager, I bet he won't take this too, but I will try. Frys has the same drive here in Cali that works out to be $57 after $50MIR, but if I can get the $20 off from my Staples purchase, that leaves me at about $47 AR and tax.

I figured there was no way they would give this to me. Everytime I try to do a pricematch with Staples, IF the pricematch brings the pre-coupon total lower than needed to meet the coupon minimum, ie $20 off $100, they tell me it's either the pricematch or the coupon but not both. But.........

I originally paid $109.94 - $20 coupon + $6.60 tax = $96.54. I just called for the pricematch to outpost and he says my credit to my cc will be $23.32. I do not know how he arrived at that figure, but I did not argue, just said "Thank you very much for your help".

$96.54 - $23.32 pm = $73.22. If both rebates work, which it seems they will, $13.22 after taxes!
I almost didn't call because I thought it was too good to be true. I trusted the Nagus.

How did you do that... Outpost.com has the same price (before rebate) as staples.com, actually few pennies more! And, I don't think they PM after rebate (well, if you do that staples turns out to be less: $30+$30 double MIR as opposed to $50 MIR from outpost).

Can you clarify?

Mystic is the Man!

Made the call and tried to get the Fry's in-store price of 98.99-$50MIR, but the CSR noticed where the drive was shipped to and that there were no Fry stores in my area. However, she mentioned the Outpost site and glady did the PM to that price. She did notice that they chrage $8 to ship the unit and had to figure that in, but I still received a credit of $13.89 :D

Those of you with a Fry's near by should give it a shot. You'll probably get even more back!

I guess if at first you don't succeed, try try again.;)

The reason is that Staples does pm to after rebate prices, and they only know about/ have one rebate listed on their site. Therefore they are pricematching about $12 to $20 difference, depending upon if they are charging you for the overnight shipping option from outpost.
