Meh, my parents rarely let me watch a rated R movie until I was 16. I just don't see where everyone on here is equating him wanting to know if his daughter is watching a rated R movie as sheltering her.

I wasn't allowed to watch In living color as an elementary student either. Woe is me and my sheltered life.

I can agree with him on it. While it would depend on how my 13 yr old daughter is (not all 13yr olds are on the same maturity level) odds are i would let her watch it. But i would be pissed off if they showed her it without my approval.

Im a grade 7/8 teacher in a Catholic school in the heart of downtown Toronto. If it makes you feel any better don't worry too much about your kids watching Troy, like many people have said here, these kids are more advanced then you think.

I got the point - sure, it's his daughter, and he SHOULD be allowed to choose. That is so obvious its not worth discussing - which is why thats not what the thread has really moved towards. Whether or not he should actually care is the real question at hand.

I also think that technically "In god we trust" shouldn't be on our money. Is that going to get me all upset that I have to post about it...not really.

I do not have kids, but as others have said, despite them being advanced, it is a parent's right and only that parent's right to decide if their child should be exposed to that material by their school or other person of authority.

We are not talking about kids watching tv at a friends house. OP has no control over that, but he DOES have a right to object to the school showing the film without his consent.

I don't think the OP is objecting at all to the violent themes, but probably the sexual themes in the movie.

Just because you saw Debbie Does Dallas when you were eight and turned out fine doesn't mean that's appropriate for his kid. In fact the "I saw such and such at age such and such and turned up fine" responses are laughable. Did you all get a psychic evaluation for proof?

The fact that a certain percentage of 12-15 y/o are sexually active does not mean that his daughter is going to end up in that statistic. The parents moral compass and involvement with their kids lives have a lot to do with their kids behavior. Parents who have open communication with their kids, set guide lines and boundaries and are involved with their kids lives often bring up well behaved kids. Most who fall into the statistics are latchkey kids with very little to no parenting. Just because 75% (exagerated to make point) of teenagers do drugs, have sex and rebel against authority doesn't mean that the parents should give up on being parents and allow their kids to follow the majority. That's what got them there in the first place.

The point I was trying to make before is lost on you. An individual has a very short window of his/her lifespan of being a kid. There's absolutely no need to hurry him/her into adulthood. In fact, some of the fondest memories of my life was being a kid. If I was a parent I would want them to enjoy those moments.

The problem with this forum is that when a member show any slight hint of "conservatism" he/she puts him/herself at the whim of a pack of hyenas. The left leaning posters don't even bother to think before posting because he knows he's being supported by his many peers.

My view is from experience and most people HAVE experienced this.

Simple fact is he posted about or asked how objectionable an 8th grader watching TROY is.

It's not because from experience almost everyone and yes almost everyone have seen rated R movies or seen or done or know someone who's done something far worse.

Also notice the political trend of this issue. As most people here agree there is a reason. It's probably because most people knew this was happening when They themselves were in school. Did they turn out fine? I would think though of course posting on anandtech to you could be not so fine. Therefore the statement that hey I turned out fine is not only perfectly valid but also very practical. That statement itself has experience behind it.

Now really the question is why is it good to show children things early or late?

Personally I've always been very curious. I try almost everything. Did I enjoy troy? yea!
