Daughter's school shows a film rated over her age without parental consent

OP thinks this is weird, thinks they would have asked first

ATOT calls his daughter a slut

R - Restricted
No one under 17 admitted unless accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

Teachers are neither parents nor are they legal guardians.

They do not have the right to make these decisions on their own. Period.

I think all of you criticising the OP are either under-educated or poorly-raised. The point is that it is HIS daughter, and HE should be the one who decides what she should be able to see. So many of you have smoked crack or watched porn or performed in porn when you were 13. So the f*** what? That just makes you even less qualified to be giving this man advice.

I'm not not mad at you losers; I'm just sorry I'm not in a position to take financial advantage of you.

So because we watched rated R movies at age 13, we're stupid, and the intelligent folk like yourself who waited till they were 17 can take advantage of us?

That is by far the most retarded thing I have heard in a long time on this board.

You missed his point entirely, as many on this thread have missed the point entirely

we didn't call her a slut, just saying being raised like that can lead to little mrs perfect in parents view acting out whenever she gets the chance to escape for a bit. you gotta expose your kids to more, make them more jaded cynical and stuff😉

Meh, my parents rarely let me watch a rated R movie until I was 16. I just don't see where everyone on here is equating him wanting to know if his daughter is watching a rated R movie as sheltering her.

I wasn't allowed to watch In living color as an elementary student either. Woe is me and my sheltered life.

while most did not call her such stuff.

IMO she's already super tramp of the school. Yet you're worried about Troy...... wait were you talking about troy the movie or one of her clients?

he sure did.

but his point was not keeping her sheltered. it was the fact it is his choice to what she watches NOT THE SCHOOLS. they should have notified them that were going to watch a rated R movie.

I can agree with him on it. While it would depend on how my 13 yr old daughter is (not all 13yr olds are on the same maturity level) odds are i would let her watch it. But i would be pissed off if they showed her it without my approval.

Im a grade 7/8 teacher in a Catholic school in the heart of downtown Toronto. If it makes you feel any better don't worry too much about your kids watching Troy, like many people have said here, these kids are more advanced then you think.

man, I used to think 13 years old was really young. But in 8th grade, I remember I knew a lot more than I think I did. Got all that ?

I'm amazed at some of the posts here (well, not really). Since when does a school trump parents? Why should they have the right to decide what is acceptable for those kids without asking the parents? The rating is for 17yo or those with parent or guardian. Schools have the rights of neither one and shouldn't be making that decision.

Pretty much. The teacher had absolutely no right to show something with a rating higher than the kids could've seen without a parent present. They should've at least sent a notice home, or something. Whether or not the kids can handle it makes no difference, it's not their choice to make, it's the parents'.

I got the point - sure, it's his daughter, and he SHOULD be allowed to choose. That is so obvious its not worth discussing - which is why thats not what the thread has really moved towards. Whether or not he should actually care is the real question at hand.

I also think that technically "In god we trust" shouldn't be on our money. Is that going to get me all upset that I have to post about it...not really.

Here is a link to a conservative groups review of Troy for objectionable material. Link

I do not have kids, but as others have said, despite them being advanced, it is a parent's right and only that parent's right to decide if their child should be exposed to that material by their school or other person of authority.

We are not talking about kids watching tv at a friends house. OP has no control over that, but he DOES have a right to object to the school showing the film without his consent.

I don't think the OP is objecting at all to the violent themes, but probably the sexual themes in the movie.

I can tell most of you ATOTers are jaded by your responses. I am jaded too but at least I don't try to project it on to others and their children.

Just because you saw Debbie Does Dallas when you were eight and turned out fine doesn't mean that's appropriate for his kid. In fact the "I saw such and such at age such and such and turned up fine" responses are laughable. Did you all get a psychic evaluation for proof?

The fact that a certain percentage of 12-15 y/o are sexually active does not mean that his daughter is going to end up in that statistic. The parents moral compass and involvement with their kids lives have a lot to do with their kids behavior. Parents who have open communication with their kids, set guide lines and boundaries and are involved with their kids lives often bring up well behaved kids. Most who fall into the statistics are latchkey kids with very little to no parenting. Just because 75% (exagerated to make point) of teenagers do drugs, have sex and rebel against authority doesn't mean that the parents should give up on being parents and allow their kids to follow the majority. That's what got them there in the first place.

The point I was trying to make before is lost on you. An individual has a very short window of his/her lifespan of being a kid. There's absolutely no need to hurry him/her into adulthood. In fact, some of the fondest memories of my life was being a kid. If I was a parent I would want them to enjoy those moments.

The problem with this forum is that when a member show any slight hint of "conservatism" he/she puts him/herself at the whim of a pack of hyenas. The left leaning posters don't even bother to think before posting because he knows he's being supported by his many peers.

This movie is rated R. She is showing a full uncut film to 13 year olds. I disagree with this and was wondering how others would feel.

I do understand that the focus of the past 2 weeks has been on mythology, but I still think that this just wrong to do without notifying the parents. There are other movies with lower ratings suitable for 8th graders.

This is at a good Catholic school in Manhattan.

Would you let her watch it at home? Probably....so whats the problem?

The movie Troy should be the least of your concerns regarding what your daughter is exposed to at that age.

We do not allow our kids to watch rated R movies at home.

I hate to be your kids, I got to watch rated R movies in theaters when I was in elementary school. Stop complaining, the kids teacher was nice enough to show them a rated R movie, and you want to blow up s if she showed them porno.

And this from a PotY candidate. Better take heed 😉

I was watching Predator and Terminator in FOURTH grade, Troy is nothing compared to those. By 8th grade, they have seen and know more than you think...

usually american kids aroud the age of16 have ad sex by now or 3/4 of their friends are engaged in some sexual stuff so dont sweat it

Why are you sending her to a Catholic school? Are you catholic. If so then the trash she reads in the bible is far worst than what is shown on Troy.

WTF?! I guess since your StatsManD account got banned you checked your old account and realized it had been unbanned? Probably won't take long before you're banned again. It'll be fun while it lasts. 😀

They can't show it even with permission from parents, I believe

Heck, they won't even show PG-13 movies to us (Senior in HS), ridiculous (in both aspects of Troy and us)

Rly? lol this political nutbusting is pathetic on either side.

My view is from experience and most people HAVE experienced this.

Simple fact is he posted about or asked how objectionable an 8th grader watching TROY is.

It's not because from experience almost everyone and yes almost everyone have seen rated R movies or seen or done or know someone who's done something far worse.

Also notice the political trend of this issue. As most people here agree there is a reason. It's probably because most people knew this was happening when They themselves were in school. Did they turn out fine? I would think though of course posting on anandtech to you could be not so fine. Therefore the statement that hey I turned out fine is not only perfectly valid but also very practical. That statement itself has experience behind it.

Now really the question is why is it good to show children things early or late?

Personally I've always been very curious. I try almost everything. Did I enjoy troy? yea!

Never said it wasn't the parent's right but that makes it so we can't argue with him or deplore his actions? Hitler had the right to kill jews but should we not deplore him for that?

And if you'll notice my use of the word right you'll understand my analogy.

Funny, he said the same about you. 😉 I'm sure it's just a coincidence that his posts were similar in style to yours, he used a lot of the same words and phrases as you, and you returned a few days after he got banned (for the same reason you got banned) after a several month absence. I guess you didn't get your "fix" of religious trolling, eh?
