During the interview, Jolie is just spitting out randomized standard garbage about the starving kids of the world. "They are smart. They can be taught too." OMG.. Holy fvcking sh!t!! What a revelation!!! The poverty-stricken kids of the world CAN be taught too.. just like us white Americans.. OMG Who knew that? Thank God Angelina Jolie told me..

The only reason the kids of the world are in poverty around the world is because their idiot parents can't organize into a functional society. But, let's not focus on the lack of ability for their societies to function.. Let's just think about the children!!!

This interview is a FLUFF piece. FLUFF!!! I wonder if the parent company of Dateline is somehow invested in promoting everything Jolie for her next movie..

There's REAL SMART people working on the problems of the world. We NEVER get to see them because Jolie and celebrities like her steal the spotlight.

what an ignorant statement. there are many "REAL SMART people" who would disagree with you. may i suggest reading The End of Poverty by jeffrey sachs...perhaps his credentials would be to your satisfaction (PhD Harvard, former Director of International Development at Harvard, currently professor and Director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University).

why hate on celebrities who have chosen to use their privilege in life as a platform to help others. do you know angelina jolie is a UN goodwill ambassador/spokesperson? each one is hand picked by the secretary general of the UN based on previous work and background. they have done more good for humanity than someone who just sits back and complains and blames. look at what bono has done with his status, the amount of awareness and money he has raised for the AIDS epidemic, and with a humility and zeal that is refreshing.

I was going to right back all pissed regarding to what brxndxn posted. but this post would make him stfu.

this post will probably be ignored, as will the others in this thread that display logic and go against the grain, i.e. hating people for no reason. you guys are pathetic.

It didn't go unnoticed, but only because I am a grammar and spelling Nazi :p ;) j/k

Good post

"If every kid were in school then 700,000 less people would get AIDS each year."..........how can she even quantify that. Is she able to see into the future.

Don't get me wrong, I think any attention drawn to issues like this, no matter if it's ego fueled or not, is good. Because someone, somewhere, will see this and it may lead them to find their life's work helping that cause.

Statistics

True, more than likely someone did a case study of kids (developmental socialogy and psychology), and found that kids with sexual education used on average such and such more protection when having sex. With those statistics, extrapolate it to a continent, I am sure 700,000 would be an approximation, but they is no way to definitively know (just deduce).

OMG, man, what are you doing to help out world problems? It seems you just create some, hater. I myself respect the fact that she wants to do her part. It isn't her fault that she is famous and still wants to do something. It is because she is famous she can do so much more. People like you need to get a clue. It is also called media. I am betting you there was a lot more to that interview, but only the apparent FLUFF stuff was put in because that is what would make people watch the show.

All you guys who agreed with this are hilarious. If you were in the Peace Corps, or working for the Red Cross, or Compassion Int'l, ... then maybe I would shut up, but most of you are just haters who in reality are just jealous of people of success who are doing so much good in the world and you downplay their accomplishments to make yourself feel better. In other words, most of you are people who lack self worth and decide to use the internet as an outlet to trash everyone else. Screw you.

And, yes, there are people out there in the world that make huge differences, even more than Angelina Jolie, but I am betting you, that half of you can't name even a few, other than the famous ones like Ghandi or Mother Theresa. How about Paul Brand? Or Chuck Colson?... ever heard of those guys. I can name even more. Or are you going to look them up on wikipedia, and claim you knew a whole bunch of people before you started trashing someone who is trying to do something of significance.

Again, if you are posting out of some shanty in Africa, helping out the poor, then I apoligize, otherwise, stop hating. I do my part by using my abilities (programming...) to help out charity organizations... I do other things, and I donate to certain groups as well, so don't even try to turn it around.

Great rebuttal... lets see how brxndxn and his followers will reply ;)
I gotta say, she's doing more than most ppl here would prolly do if they were in her shoes. Hell, there are ppl on this board who do have money, but spend it on AMG Mercedes, M5 Beemers, super-uber PC's and ridiculously expensive (several thousands, $10,000+) home theaters.

I put in over 3,600 hours of national community service, turned a crackhouse into an after-school program, worked as a summer-camp counselor 2X's, helped gang members change their lives and worked as a case worker in 2 middle schools in 2nd ward in Houston where drugs are rampant, gang violence is old news, teen pregnancy is an elective, and seen a kid get stabbed right in front of me.. all this and even I can say  Angelina Jolie

Until someone here can say they've made some type of contribution that has literally changed the lives of ppl in a positive way than you really can't say crap.

Her lips are frickin huge.

Anyways I don't think she really cares, she just loves the limelight with all her different babies from different racial groups.

Gone are the days of Robert Redfords and Paul Newmans who actually cared about things and did stuff about them.

They are just ordinary people with one or two talents/gifts that made them famous and are now using that money and talent for philanthropy. No big deal, but no reason to hate.
For instance, I don't like how Microsoft charges an arm and a leg for their software, but I do like the fact that Bill Gates donates so much to charity. He and his old business partner, built Microsoft by being talented at business, and now he is giving back. It doesn't matter that it is a tax break method, it is still donated to great charities instead of the 'Save the Polo Club' or something of that nature which could have been easily as done.

:D Amen to that brotha. Where in Houston do you do that stuff?

I wanted to do HfH (Habitat for Humanity) with a group of mine, but when I went to plan it, we found that we had to raise $10 Gs, so it was a no go. It would be cool to find out about organizations that need manpower to do stuff. Right now, I have less time to volunteer, but for a short period I could get something together. :)

**EDIT**
BTW, do you do social work or something?

Adopting kids and giving them a chance at a better life is something very useful. :)

It might not change the world, but every life you change for the better is a life that may change hundreds and millions of peoples lives in the future.

I, for one, respect her enough, just for that. As for getting the word out by using her name. It is a great way of getting global attention and a lot of money for support.

Look, I've gone to third-world countries and tried to help out....you know WTF I realized......I was wasting my and their time. Oh it made me feel very good about myself for a while.....there I was helping out these orphans. But what happened when I went home? They'd have been better off, in the long run, if I'd just saved the money I spent travelling there and back and gave it to them for materials....materials which would get used up and leave them right the hell where they were to start with.

They don't need me....they don't need you...and they certainly don't need smug-ass Geroge Freaking Clooney or Angelina Jolie looking down their rich noses at them. They need a political infrastructure around them that gives them opportunities to learn if they want to and work if they want to and not have to constantly fear murder or rape or theft. But that's nation building and that's baaaaad and we Americans should mind our own damn business, right? Fine.

Kudos to the doctors or engineers who choose to move to these places and live there and offer their appreciable skills where they are missing. But in no time they'll be just another local doctor clamoring for more money and more medicine and supplies and never getting enough.

It's the old saying that you can give a man a fish and feed him for a day or teach him how to fish and feed him for a lifetime. These countries need security and they need corruption put down and they need a chance for an education. When there is a call for aid in doing this, I'll be first in line, but if you're looking for someone to stand next to you and spit at the forest fire, then no thanks.

So that's what pisses people off about celebrities. They're stupid for thinking people don't already know this stuff......and mostly they aren't making a shred of difference except for their own egos which get all puffed up when they think about all the people listening to what they say and thinking what good people they are......I guess it makes them feel better when they wake up in their 20 million dollar mansions and have that twinge of guilt sitting on their solid gold toilet seat as their private cook prepares them a fois grais omelette for breakfast.

I've gone to Mexico a few times, in the very poor disctricts and helped build houses. We raised money and support and built a house with wood bought in Mexico. It was about $1000 of materials each time. BTW $1000 is more than a well off middle class family in that town made in a year. The families were very appreciative, and it probably helped them out immensely because it allowed them to have a more secure place to stay and allowed the father to not worry about security while working. It is a good thing to help people out. Also, yes they need a political change, but again helping out someone may not change the political aspect of the country, but it does help one person's life out. Saying that we should mind our own business and turning a blind eye is not the solution and it only helps the problem. Being proactive and calling for political change and supporting that isn't something to be looked down on.

**EDIT**
Oh and how is Angelina Jolie trying to get global pressure on the local governments for education and reform, not a way of teaching the children "how to fish"?

nothing wrong with helping one person, one family at a time...

but yes, ultimately, there needs to be a paradigm shift, and the infrastructure/institutions that are causing people to remain in poverty need to be tackled (e.g. corrupt governments, crime, as you pointed out)

look at it this way...would you have come to the realization about the importance of a viable political infrastructure, had you not taken the step to help out first hand? i don't think your going over there was a waste.

They're stupid for thinking people don't already know this stuff......and mostly they aren't making a shred of difference except for their own egos which get all puffed up when they think about all the people listening to what they say and thinking what good people they are......I guess it makes them feel better when they wake up in their 20 million dollar mansions and have that twinge of guilt sitting on their solid gold toilet seat as their private cook prepares them a fois grais omelette for breakfast.

nothing wrong with helping one person, one family at a time...

but yes, ultimately, there needs to be a paradigm shift, and the infrastructure/institutions that are causing people to remain in poverty need to be tackled (e.g. corrupt governments, crime, as you pointed out)

look at it this way...would you have come to the realization about the importance of a viable political infrastructure, had you not taken the step to help out first hand? i don't think your going over there was a waste.

She's a freakin' idiot. I'm tired of any Hollywood celebrities that think they can live higher than everyone else in the US - like they themselves are the only gift to humanity.

QFT.

Im not going to argue semantics but that woman went to Peshawar and actually donated $100,000 in 40 orthopedic beds for the quake victims in Islamabad

More then anybody else on this forum has ever and probably will ever do.

Reason for the celebrity interview is that the newsmagazines like Dateline are having a difficult time competing with reality tv and they are desperate for viewers. Nothing more. Saw an article about this recently but can't recall where.

Better than doing nothing at all.
Pretty much.
