someday I will genetically engineer the perfect pet...it won't need food or crap all over the place, since it will gets its energy from sunlight...it will look almost the same fully grown as it does as an infant, and it will be naturally neutered, requiring an operation to become fertile.

my wife did the same to me last year....theres a fully grown mallard around here somewhere , beautiful duck...but i cant help to think of roasting him whenever i see it.

wow, in all the areas I'm familiar with, you need to purchase a minimum of 4 or 6 chicks at a time - you can't buy just 1 to have as a pet.
 
We need more pics. So we know exactly when the duck stopped being cute and your kid lost interest.
 
A friend of mine (NO, NOT ME) used a duck to get laid/get a GF. At some point early on, he said something about always wanting to have a duck for a pet. She was like, ahhh how cute/sweet/sensitive/etc. Fast forward a few weeks and they're a couple. So, what does she get him for his birthday? A fully grown duck of course. A duck that sh!ts all over his apartment and bothers him and the old retired lady next door with its quacking all day. A least if a dog barks and sh!ts all day in your apartment, its smart enough to realize that you're mad about something, and for the time being, it will stop. Not so with a duck. Enjoy your impluse buy --- at least you can get rid or eat or eat it.
 
If you need to get rid of it, I know a certain zoo that gasses small fuzzy yellow birds and feeds them to hungry animals.
