i was walking through sf yesterday and outside the tunnel on sutter street there was a clean 19" sony crt with a sign that said "free! yes it works!". someone had just dumped it there bc they didnt want to pay the recycling fee. its funny ten years ago that would have been a cool find! its sort of a shame something like that goes to waste now, its still really useable.

at my house i have a spare room with two brand new boxed trinitrons from the internet auction days that i never had any use for

A THREE CRT setup!?! I think I just shat myself multiple times, God damn I would kill to have a desk that could support 3 CRT's

Starting about 6-7 years ago schools and charities would only take 'black' flat screens (trinitrons) of 17" or larger. A few years later only 19"...then no one wanted them.

I put a craigslist out for 100 like new 17" trinitrons that could do up to 1600x1200...took 3 months for someone to come and get them and took three different takers. Almost all were going out of the country.

I have a Sony 34xbr970 Trinitron WEGA HDTV that I use as the main television in my house. Love that thing but it ways almost 200 pounds. Probably won't be getting rid of it unless it dies or something.

I'm with the "don't really miss them camp".

I transitioned when I moved into my college dorm and found no space for my CRT. Ended up sending that back home and getting a LCD monitor that made it possible. I wish laptops were as good as they are now, I don't think I'd have had a desktop at all.

That's sad. Still lots of good uses for those CRTs, you would thing that charities would especially like them. You could set up quite a few perfectly good computing stations for email, web browsing, etc for libraries, the poor and such using used computer equipment.

Ugh... just moved a bigass CRT as part of my job last week and my back still hurts from it. The thing weighed close to a hundred pounds, for a graphics designer that didn't like LCD's.

:thumbsup: My parents have one of these in their computer room. Used to have a 17" CRT on it from the previous computer, but they've had an LCD for the last 5 years.

It was originally my Dad's desk from university 30 years ago and it is an absolute beast. I could put my 30" CRT Toshiba tv on there and it would hold it fine (weighs approx 100lbs).

I miss the good ole days too in some ways. LCD's suck badly in scrolling games like RTS's if you got good eyes and are perceptive about it. I personally can't ignore blur in situations like that. LCD's won't be here forever tho something better and as fast or faster than CRT will come.

I'm happy to have abandoned CRTs.

I don't remember how RTSes were on CRT Zebo, but it's true that scrolling is not perfet on LCDs.
I think I read something abot 3D monitors (120Hz) solving this issue (like no blur when you move windows aroud) on a review from anand.
You might want to try one out at a shop or something and see if it's true.

Does not work Murloc. Can't defeat laws of physics and hardware.fr and toms shows this. it's still like 70 µs vs. 4-5 ms for LCD to change with 120's.
