Damn I forgot how good, good CRTs were.

I'm typing this on my old 21" Sony G520 flat screen Trinitron CRT. I loved this thing back when I got it years ago! But I've been using my 30" DELL for quit a while now. The DELL still smokes this thing in colour saturation and overall experience, not like I would go back, but I have to say the Sony is still no slouch. Everything has a softer look to it but the colours are clearly more subtle and it has something of a more professional look to it.

I'm going to be putting this screen in my MAME cabinet that I'm finishing building. Yeah it's not the best screen for that job but I don't have anything else right now. I might pick up an old TV at a 2nd hand store latter to give it a more authentic feel.

There's not an LCD on the planet I'd take over a Diamontron CRT. I go on CraigsList every day looking for one for sale locally.

Has your desk started warping yet? :^P

I don't miss CRTs at all. They're only(sometimes) marginally better, and the space they waste, and the heat they generate is irritating. I like the old TV idea for your MAME system. I think it would look more authentic. You may be able to pickup an ancient CRT that would give the same effect.

Dude, I absolutely  good CRTs. Be them PC or TV screens, if they were at least mid-range price between cheap and holy-shit-how-much? models -- as in the more expensive consumer-brand models versus the low-quality brands -- they usually were very good models. Some even stood up to the dual-purpose test, as in a wide-ranging media-center system with couch-browsing HTPC and television/video functions. The difficult trick was that not much in the way of PC hardware really stood up to that challenge, well into the existence of affordable LCDs.

Most consumer brands jumped the CRT ship as other technologies became more accepted.

The technology progression that I've been waiting for, is the next-generation of display technologies. Canon seriously needs to focus on bringing SED to the consumer market. That tech was hot! My love of the finely-crafted CRT capabilities, mixed with the awesomeness of LCD technology. In short, more awesome than even Plasma, which as of now stands as my favorite display technology thanks to the progress of the last few years.
From CRT, it shared fast-refresh, contrast ratio, color depth, and viewing angles. With LCD, it shares the case size (thin) and actually even has lower power draw.

Plasma has nearly-equal color depth, and amazing contrast ratios, and shares the awesome viewing angles... but CRT, and SED, have even better color and contrast ratios, and though Plasma has gotten fast thanks to advances in sub-field drive refresh times, SED can be faster iirc.

I remembered how much I loved the HD CRTs, but they were massive, and some of the widescreen models had magnet issues viewable in the picture.

I really hope Canon is able to do something with SED research.

The display on my Diamondtron is still very excellent, but some internal switch is getting flakey. If I turn off my computer or the System Reboots while I'm away and it goes into Power Saving Mode, it takes approx 12 Off/On attempts before it begins displaying again. I'm afraid that one day it simply won 't display. :(

Sony SFP tubes in XBR sets can't be beat (last gen had outsourced non-SFP tubes). My 30" $2,300 XBR910 still blows people away when they see it, even compared to my 52" $5,000 XBR and 65" $3,000 LG LCD panels.

It sucks that thin CRTs never made it to market.

I still can't find something that can match color and quality of a crt screen.

Only thing I won't miss about CRTs were how heavy they were.

lol I brought this thing down from upstairs and I nearly broke my back just carrying it down 2 flights of stairs. Yeah it's a heavy mofo. The colour reproduction is clearly better though. Much softer more accurate looking colours. LCDs "look" better because of their deep colour saturation but they don't seem to have the accuracy of CRTs IMO. Again not that I would go back I love me my DELL :p

This EXACTLY.

Im currently using my XBR960 34" at a scaled 1080p resolution thru HDMI coming from my 18.4" LCD on my Asus W90 which is a amazing LCD...and even looking at my 60" 1080p DLP in comparison this Sony XBR is fucking amazing and pwns it in every way other than size. My bro even offered me $300 for it and I had to say no.

I dont think I can ever go back to LCD as long as my Sony XBR keeps kicking. Colors are too rich, blacks are actually full BLACK and not gray or destroyed by backlight bleeding through..etc etc etc...CRT all the way if you dont mind the size/weight...which honestly...I moved it once to my desk and I wont move it for years...so its non-issue for me...

Maybe 5 years ago but I see no reason now for pretty much anyone to use them.

This coming from someone who had a Samsung 900NF (high quality 19" Diamondtron). My parents have it now and it's in perfect shape which is amazing for 10+ years. But the size, weight, and heat of it while not really offering anything over even a few year old LCD makes it pointless. Text is much better on LCDs too.

Are you serious? CRT's offer nothing compared to LCD's? REALLY?

Id like whatever LCD you're using!

brightness/contrast dimished with time, bad idea to buy a used one.
high color gamut lcds are just fine.

I'm surprised this has only been mentioned once. CRTs wipe the floor when it comes to input lag and refresh rate. I have yet to try a 120hz LCD, maybe those will change my mind. Till then looking from my 60hz LCD to my friends 85hz CRT in L4D2 makes me long for my heat generating monstrosity.

Agreed, LCDs caught up to CRTs a long time ago and surpassed CRTs a while ago. I stuck with a CRT for as long as I could but eventually LCDs just got too damn good and too damn cheap for me to pass up. Plus CRTs died more often, it seems.

CRTs were nice and crisp, but I'll take 10% of the weight and space of my LCD any day now

Blacks are to die for...thats my only gripe with LCD's and the way fleshcolours aren't flesh colours...

Canon abandoned SED like 3 months ago

Better for contrast ratio and motion but vastly inferior for text clarity at high resolutions and the flicker!

Problem is increasing refresh rate to combat flicker (100Hz was the MINIMUM for me!) pushed the video bandwith causing blurriness of text.

I <3 my Dell 2209WA

I wish I could compare it to my old Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930SB CRT but it weighed a shit ton and was starting to die. I had to take it out back and put it down.

Good riddance I say. They took up massive amounts of desk space, were warm enough to heat a room, and the damn flicker killed my eyes. I had a 21" at one point and that fucker about killed my desk. After awhile it started sagging in the middle. I'll take the dual 22" widescreen LCD's I have at work any day.
