Damn I forgot how good, good CRTs were.

Still use a sony trinitron along with lcd. I use it for final output testing of video and CG . Closest LCD that could match it was $1800 from Lacie. CRT like these are stilled used in studios too. Walk in any modern VFX studio and you will see a lot of LCD but you will also see a lot of CRT. When it comes to proofing color they are hard to beat.

i like how so many of you blaim CRTs for poor desk construction

heh. I don't worry about it. My desk is 6ft long , 3.5ft wide and steel with a 2" top, was made in the 1970's. One of those old military desk. It will probably outlive me.

I was going to post about how I like the fact that my LCD's don't cause all of my desks to bow after a couple months/years.

I will instead comment that I appreciate the fact that my LCD monitors don't require me to spend a ton of money on a desk just to support their weight and allow me to function just fine on an ikea desk or repurposed kitchen table.

There's a reason why it's dead technology; just gotta pay the premium for a quality lcd.

Quality CRT > quality LCD, I've seen hi-quality LCD's up close, I'd still take a Diamondtron CRT 10/10 times. The fact CRT's a dead technology means nothing to me. The day I find a Diamontron on CraigsList will be the day I get rid of my LCD. 4 years ago I ditched a $700 24" LCD for a 22" Trintron, and if that hadn't went out I'd still be on it.

I used to have a really nice CAD level monitor, but to be honest I don't miss it. Here is why: the flickering.

Even though the monitor I had would do some nice refresh rates, e.g. 85 hz @ 1600 x 1200 resolution, it still did something to my eyes where I would start to get a headache and see spots. I learned later on that this was an onset of a migraine. So in essence for years I had been giving myself migraine headaches by using CRT's. When I used a lower end CRT at work it would be much worse sometimes. I would literally have to step outside and take a 15 minute break because I started to see dots all over my vision.

When I switched over to LCD, I just don't get that effect anymore. It's a much more smooth experience.

Also there is the weight factor. CRT's are just plain hard to move around in comparison with LCD's. When we had to dispose of the CRT's where I work I moved about 30 of them for the computer recyclers and some of the CAD type CRT's were heavy as hell. My back was sore for weeks afterward. Especially the 24" CRT's - these things must have weighed literally a hundred pounds or more, thankfully we only had about 3 of them that came from the graphics department.

Flicker never bothered me. Weight and power usage/heat were annoying of course, particularly the last one. CRT are pretty much win, but the fact that they became difficult to find and affordable widescreen ones were never common meant I just went with the herd.

But LCDs are annoying as hell for a lot of things. Crappy scaling from non-native resolutions, low-mid range ones never had aspect ratio preservation options. Bad blacks and generally not great colors.

one of the guns on my diamondtron failed fairly early and my trinitron was getting fuzzy (or maybe 1600x1200 on a 19" is just too much) so i went to an LCD. accidentally ordered the wide 20". still miss those 150 vertical pixels. 2001fpw is a pretty decent LCD for a mass market screen.

I loved my CRT monitors. they were great. I think the picture is far better then LCD's.

if it was not for the size i wouldn't have got a LCD. a 22 inch CRT would be fricken huge.

Lots of people are into the FW900 (24" wide screen CRT)...IMHO about 99% are doing this because they can't afford a top of class LCD.

I had a 21" Sony G500 (I still use one at my office), but I *heart* my NEC LCD2490WUXi.

$600 NOS. It was a 'refurb' but had 0 hours on it.

I <3 my Dell 2209WA

I wish I could compare it to my old Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930SB CRT but it weighed a shit ton and was starting to die. I had to take it out back and put it down.

My mom is using this exact monitor, the 930SB, hooked up to her crummy Dell laptop. It's my old CRT, and I hate seeing that happen to it lol. Every time I look at it the image is black boxed because she doesn't know any better and the resolution is like 1024x768 or some ass.

I just wish I had something to do with it.

Funniest thing I remember about CRTs was how some dorks pronounce the abbreviations!

NEC pronounced "neck" and CRT pronounced "curt".

They say "my NEC CRT" sounds like they are saying "my neck hurt".

So I say "Where did you hurt it?" :D

those of us who had a FW900 when it was new could/can afford a higher end LCD, fuckers weren't cheap. if only i could get a 24 inch LCD that ran 2,304 x 1,440 :hmm:

That's just it, you never had to spend a lot of money. There are TONS of used gov't/military issue wood desks, TONS, that all screw apart and are built to handle anything. I got my first one for $3.

People, and there are many, who have them know exactly the desk I'm talking about. They came in many slight variations including a lowerable mid-section for a secretary with a typewriter, but they are all instantly recognizable as being of the same family/design.

Last move, I foolishly gave mine to one of my friend helping me move.

Bad google picture of one:

I had teachers who pronounced "ISA" and seen computer shop owner/operators who pronounced "URL." I once found a textbook that said that you were supposed to pronounce ALL tech acronyms and abbreviations, so these people must have read that and taken it as truth! The computer shop guy didn't even know why his customer looked so confused. I'm sure he did it all the time.

How about pronouncing AGP? PCI? PCMCIA? ;)

CRTs suck ass. On my Dell 3007, I can't tell the difference in image quality or color. The black look damn black to me, and not grey at all. Anyone who prefers a CRT is crazy.
