You're right about that. My wife is really allergic to cig smoke and she gets really sick if she smells it. Eating at restaurants tends to be difficult because of this. It's really hard to enjoy your food when you're sick to your stomach. I've asked people before if they wouldn't mind smoking somewhere else and they've been polite and have put out their cigs before. But there are also the ones that get defensive and become asinine when asked to put out their cigs. Even when they can see it's making my wife sick.

The Philly Metro today has a full page ad listing smoke-free restaurants in and around the city.
There are places out there where you can enjoy a meal if smoke affects you so badly.
If you are willingly in a place that allows smoking, it's hard to feel sorry for you...it's not like you don't know smoke makes your wife sick. Good for the people nice enough to put out their cigs, but for those who choose not to, their point is well-made.

Funny anyone should bring this up.. acually in my state(md) and in D.C they are thinking about putting a new law in place that would ban smoking all together from public places.

A question to smokers:

Would you find it offensive if while in a bar or restaurant, someone came in who not only was wearing 100 times too much perfume, but who every minute or so sprayed even more into the air around you the entire evening? This person would have a "right" to wear perfume and even to spray it in the air (as much as a smoker has a right to add cigarette smoke to public air), but would it be "right" of them to exercise this right when it is probably offensive to a large part of the population?

In general, most would say that the person in the above scenario was being seriously selfish to put thier desire to have the smell of their perfume permeate all their surroundings above the comfort level of the majority who were being subjected to it. I realize that the hypothetical perfume wearer/sprayer isn't chemically addicted like a smoke might be, but what if they were? Would you defend their right to spray something nausiating in the air all around you?

As far as smokers having a "right" to smoke... it isn't true. There are very few "rights" which we are guaranteed... smoking is a current priviledge. Many priviledges in life are controlled (smoking age, drinking age) or made illegal in certain situations (drinking while driving, smoking inside some public buildings) for the benefit of the greater population. The reason that I point this out is that no one is discriminating against smokers as much as society is changing the limits of the priviledge to smoke. Note that it's not a knee-jerk reaction to tobacco use but only a reaction to situations where others have to take the byproduct of the tobacco into their systems without their permission.... a comparison would be making a non-tobacco user drink the spit from a tobacco dipper... though that scenario is MUCH more discusting!

Hah I was gone for 6 hours and you guys kept bitching didn't you? Well too bad. I am not gonna read all your posts you bitch ass cry babies. However even without reading it, I hope all smokers blow the smoke on your face when you are in a restaurant or another public place. End of story, no more visits to this thread as it is full of idiot like you all.

hey jzero, do you mean city paper, phila weekly, the inquirer or something else? both of my parents are allergic to smoke so it's hard to take them out to restauraunts. that list would be great to have.

regarding smokers. it annoys me but i won't complain about it. it really is just a fact of life in most places. hopefully they will pass laws like they did in california. at any rate, i just remember that i'm better than them, and suck up the second hand smoke like a man ;)

some of you need to chill out

It's the Metro. It think it's the paper that's put out by Septa. Check at a train or bus station.

Hardly! Unlike smoking, I haven't had to personally watch six or seven friends die from nagging in the last few years. :| :(
