That's pretty pathetic, in my opinion. A teacher tries to show you something beyond the surface and you bitch and moan.

W/e, she's still psycho, i can find the rest of school subjects usefull, even biology, but GOD DAMN give us the basic concept.

Were students always this apathetic and disinterested?

Not as I recall. The majority of them are like this even in college now. They don't want to have to do any work for a good grade, and expect at least a B for just coming to class.

Thats the thing, we dont DO any work. We just sit there and listen. And she expects us to get all that information in our heads by just hearing her babble on and on.

If she gave us worksheets from once in a while, where it is expected of us to go through the book/notes and fill it in, then i would be doing fine.

She goes through tons of definitions in 50 minutes and expects me to come the next day and do good on her "POP" quiz (she doesnt tell us when we're getting a quiz, just "POPS" one out) how lame.

Do you have a book? Do the questions within and at the end of the chapter. The majority of your college classes aren't going to have required work either. Its hard to grade 10 problems when you get the 10 problems from 200+ students. Be proactive.

A 69 is most likely a D. Thats not failing, but it does suck.

And to Descartes:
It all depends on how the material is presented. I'm taking a writing class with a natural sciences basis this semester. Normally, as you know, scientific writing is pretty bland. We read Richard Dawkins's The Selfish Gene and Lewis Thomas's collection of essays The Life of a Cell. They went in depth into topics but portrayed them in interesting light. I can read scientific literature thats boring, but it doesn't provoke me in the least.

forget it man. this kid is like 7 years old. he's probably in 3rd grade and won't reach college for years.

Nice comeback..

You dont talk about thylakoids in 3rd grade, douche.

I agree with you OP. Seems that the teacher should use different types of teaching media to keep things interesting. Besides, not every student is a "visual learner" or "audio learner." Some need hand's on experience, etc. A good teacher will recognize this,

Suggestion: Go to the teacher (as boring as she sounds) and find out if there is any extra credit work that you could complete.

is everyone close to failing? because if some are actually doing well, maybe it's not the teacher's fault?

pop quizzes are supposed to just pop up, you genius. theyre meant to take you by surprise so you and the teacher can assess what you do or dont know.

if the teacher goes that in depth and even makes the notes for you, i fail to see how your low grade is somehow her fault.

I find it absolutely stunning that a 69 is a fail!

In every school I've ever attended, including university, the scale was like this:

90 - 100 - A+
80 - 089 - A
75 - 079 - B+
70 - 074 - B
65 - 069 - C+
60 - 064 - C
50 - 060 - D
00 - 049 - F

Lucky fvcker!! Damn, 80-89 A..

You know how much bitching i get for having a B. But my parents mean well.

I mean, i used to be a really good student, All high As, then after i came to the US at around 13, i saw how little effort i needed here to do good.

I dont bring a bookbag to school, and somehow manage to have All A's and B's and only this one D in Bio. Most B's i will fix.

88 - 93 B
81-87? C (I don't remember how it went from there)
75-80? D
0-74 F

that's crazy! maybe the grading system is different in Canada, though.

in my high school, everything was a straight numerical percentage (no letter grades whatsoever), but for the purposes of failing a course (re: having to go to summer school or getting kicked out of the school) anything below a 75 was considered to be a failing grade.

Is this an AP Biology class?

If it is, I'm going through the same thing. PPT slides suck now. :(

My grades for Biology

1st Quarter - A
2nd Quarter - B
3rd Quarter - B
4th quarter - In progress.

No one in the class knows anything except a few of the "smart ones" (mainly rank #1 and rank #2 students)

3 weeks or so till the AP tests...have fun. The AP test for Biology is all about memorization - bad or good thing? I don't know.

:frown:

Edit - To make things worse, she left for maternity leave right when AP tests are coming up. Because of this, we spend everyday reviewing the book's site in the MAC LAB....

71 is "close to failing"?

Yeah dude, 2 points = 69. And since its close to the end of the semester, she sent a letter.

A 69 is a fail?!? You're in highschool, yes?

Yes, sir.

That can't be right. In my school, a 49 is a fail.
So, you're assuming that everyone that failed at other schools with 69/59-- is lying?
Every school has different requirements for graduation/passing classes.

Oh, no, I'm just saying 69 is quite a high mark. I couldn't imagine that anywhere except a private school.

i went to a private school at 70 was required to pass as well

my biology teacher also sucked.

69 is fail on my curriculum as well. And my mom doesn't like my grades on anything to be lower than 90

DaymN!? I never knew your grading scales were different from mine...

93-100 = A
92-090 = A-
89-087 = B+
86-083 = B
82-080 = B-
79-077 = C+
76-073 = C
72-070 = C-
69-067 = D+
66-063 = D
62-060 = D-
59 and below = F

So far I'm maintaining at least 5 A's and 1 A-.
