The new Canon is indeed tempting. Late in the year, I may consider getting one as my 35 SLR crapped out on me. I want a film 4x5 camera, but for everyday shooting, it is not practical. Nothing in the digital world can touch that though, no matter what they say about 25,000 dollar digital backs. My problem is making exibition quality prints from digital cameras. Glossy printer paper is never going to look like Cibachrome.

I'm thinkin' I want my first to be a good prime and my second to be a fast zoom. I just don't know which yet. Still readin' up on that stuff! Recommendations with explanations welcome!!

Sorry, I meant to ask, where are you buying the lenses from? I'm also interested in purchasing the same Canon camera. The sample takes floating around on the net are breathtaking. :D

I have a PowerShot S30. I really want a digital SLR though, the AF system in this camera isn't great all the time so you can get shots out of focus. An SLR will guarantee focus if you do it manually. I really like the EOS-10D because it is a great camera and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg ($8000) like the 1Dz (or maybe it is the 1Ds). Anyway, 6.3MP is good enough for me but $1500 is still a lot of money. I am waiting for a camera like that to come down under $1000.

On a side note, I donated $10 to dpreview a few hours ago.

lirion,

Thanks for the Bestbuy tip!!!!!!

All three of my local BB's got them in and only one had any left! They're holding it for me. I'll pick it up this afternoon :D

they don't Pricematch CDW but I do have a $100.00 gift card I've been holding on to so I'm within $100.00 of my CDW price (well, then there's tax...). And I'm able to buy the extended warranty on top of it.(which I was kind of concerned about).

Further, I was trying to figure out what I was going to do for a Digital Camera these next couple weeks being that I have out of town family visiting and a lot going on that needs to be shot. Wheeeeewwww!!!

So, off to BB this afternoon!! :D :D :D :D

Nah, I'm nowhere near professional (professional gadget stalker mabye). You should check out lirion's work though - very impressive! Gotta head out to BB, but i'll dig up a link later, or PM lirion, or he can post it here.

I'm no pro. Professional nature photography is a very cut-throat business. Very few can actually make a living at it. The kind of stuff that I do is obscure and specialized enough that I probably could do it for a living, but it would definitely require a degree that I don't have just to be taken seriously, and I would have to deal with publishers and agencies and still be as poor or poorer than I am now. Still it has its appeal though. But for now and for the foreseeable furture it will be just a hobby for me.

So did you get It, Sketcher? You're probably out playing with it and won't see this, but I was just curious what kind of glass you got to go with it.

Be sure to post pics when you can!

to make a living as photographer is pretty cut throat, no matter what area you specialize. I took a few pro classes and had an awesome teacher who has been involved with professional photgrapher for decades. Really experienced and ran the buisness side. Hard stuff.

Photographers for the most part pretty poor by itself. Many photographers supplement their income through teaching college, special classes through the community and finding other jobs. Plus, noone is paying for your equipment. You make due with what you have and what can afford.

Hey lirion,

This thing doesn't exactly fit in the shirt pocket does it!? ;)

I picked up a spare battery and a 256MB CF to get me started

and eh, EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

This thing is AWESOME!! but powering it on for the first time, I'm a bit overwhelmed with what I have. I've only powered it up to check for dead pixels and lense operation, well - OK I shot about 50 pics before the battery dumped (it has an initial charge for testing, but that's it ;) The battery's charging right now.

Sweet machine! Looks formidable with that robocop lens, but it handles well and fits comfortable in hand.

It's the kids' bed time so pajama's and stories are the modus operandi. I'll post a couple pics tomorrow!

Have a good night all!

Here are some pics from my 1st test shoot just running around snappin' 'till the test charge ran out. Camera's at default settings w/no adjustments of any kind whatsoever. No editing, resizing or squat. They're approx. 2MB files so plan on some time if you're on Dial-up!

Neighborhood from backyard

Kids Playset

Neighbor's Car

Poorly composed Macro shot

That's it for now. Don't expect much from me - I'm a n00b with some good gear ;) nothing more. Learning though!

Neighborhood from backyard .. interesting .. where was the point of focus?

Poorly composed Macro shot .. this is interesting .. says you shot it at f5.6 .. the right side of the bottle should not be out of focus and the left side of the bottle. You manually or auto focus? Also, the top of the label going down get blurry.

I downloaded your neighborhood photo. Took forever for me. A lot of people who have that lens complain about softness. Your photo is a little soft, but really not that bad for a consumer zoom. Wide angle zooms are notoriuously soft anyway. Something that a lot of people are saying is helpful is performing a reset of all settings on the 10D. There's no reason this should work, but a lot of people are saying this improves sharpness. It's worth a try, it won't hurt anything.

I considered getting that lens, but I just can't justify owning another piece of glass in that range, even if it does have IS. IS lenses are a hoot, you're going to love it. You'll probably still want to pick up a fast prime. F/3.5 can be a little limiting if there's not much light.

Oh, it's Canon tradition that once you get a new camera you have to post a cat picture. It doesn't have to be your cat, as long as you can take a picture of it. And it has to really suck. The suckier the better. This is your initiation;)

For these first pictures, I just ran around and took quick shots. I can't really say what the settings were at other than it was default out of the box (gonna do that reset lirion mentioned - and there's some info on FredMiranda.com about that).

1. Point of focus for the neighborhood shot was actually the water above left of the little pine tree. Autofocus didn't like shooting the rippling water much but I didn't set up the shot either, just viewed and clicked a few off. First of the backyard was wide open, second half zoom, third full zoom (third captured far side of 2nd pond). I just didn't have room on the hosted site to put them all up there.

2. "says you shot it at f5.6" ?? Where does it say that? I don't know what the settings were at, just put the bottle in the left of the frame, selected depth of field to hold the left portion of the label and shot. I was standing above the bottle shooting down so that's why from top to bottom it gets blurry.

Hey now, that?s kind of like asking a middle-aged woman how much she weighs isn?t it!? :) I ain?t sayin? ? other than I had a $100.00 off GC, everything was retail. I decided waiting a month wasn?t worth $171.00 in savings. Have a few events coming up this week & next that need to be shot.

I'll try that reset you mentioned. I read the same reference on a couple other sites. I read up on this lens before I bought and noted the "softness" reported. I just coudn't find a lens in that range with better f or sharpness for under $1,000k (and I have 30 days to return it). You're right, I'll be getting a fast prime likely next week.

What's ashame is, I'll admit I really don't know enough about what I have right here to appreciate it properly. Sort of like a kid plopping down *cough* $2,400 *cough* (there's your total tommy) for a gaming computer when all he ever does is play backgammon & cribbage online. Though, I most certainly am learning photography, so that example's somewhat of a stretch. I just mean to put things in perspective atm. My Uncle is visiting next week so this camera can be properly appreciated ;D

As far as the price; it's a bit inflated. I'll likely be returning the lens and purchasing it elswhere. BB sells it for above suggested retail and online retailers sell it for about $300.00 below suggested retail. Just figured I'd get a a nice lens to try out and return it. BB didn't have a problem w/that - just said to make sure it's not damaged and that I return it w/in 30 days.

Initiation! :D. Well, I can pretty easy come up with the "it has to really suck" part ;) But the cat........ Gonna have to go find one! No one in either of our families in town have. Ahh, the neighbor's cat! Haven't seen it outside in a while.

Alright. A cat it is!

Awesome! I'm jealous :) Those images are so smooth. No noise at all! CMOS sensors rock.

How much did you pay total?

A D-SLR is certainly on my list of goodies to buy once I have a JOB.

Too lazy to read through everything when I'm not going to buy these, but, Why is the 1D soo much more than the 10D? From the SPECS the 10D looks like it'd be better? (Looking at CDW the 1D is $2000 more). I must be missing something obvious.

$2400 for the whole shebang (camera and lens and memory and batts etc) doesn't sound too bad, 6x the price of my minolta S404 but If I had the $$$ I'd do that in a heartbeat.

Once you get One or two good pics that you know you wouldn't have gotten with film will make it all worth while!

The 1D is built on the Canon "1" series body. The case is a solid chunk of magnesium alloy, and all the buttons are gusseted and sealed. With a sealed lens you can use this thing in the freaking rain and nothing will happen to it. It also has 8 frames per second, and a buffer of like 24 frames or something outrageous like that. It has 45 point autofocus, arguably the best in the world. It has a larger imager than the "D" series bodies so wide angle lenses are wider. Higher ISO settings, higher shutter speed, pretty much higher everything except pixels, but that's something else. The photosites on the sensor are larger than the D60/10D, so each one records more information. The resolution of the 1D and the 10D are roughly equal. The only thing it sucks at is long exposures. It's just not in the same class as the 10D/D60.

Cool. Glad you got the camera; learning photography will be even more fun now. :)

I've only done a little experimentation with SLR stuff, back in high school, but I want to get back into it. I'm going to settle for my C-4000 right now, but my day will come... :D

If you (or any of y'all) need more storage for bigger pics, click my sig. Feel free to store as much as you want, within reason. No quotas (as of now).

Nice, but if you do not have a good tripod, you will not get 1/10 the quality in macro shots. Meebe you have that already though.
